I got quite a few quotes, and they were the best. I also went with them because my neighbors have used them in the past. Actually, the price was a little higher than one other quote I got, but when I told him about the other quote, he said he'd match it.

They were done in two hours. It was amazing. They were very neat. They ground everything down to sawdust and hauled away. Their prices are reasonable.

We have used Compton's Tree Service from Culpeper, Virginia over the past ten years and have been very happy with them. We couldn't remember the telephone number so went on Angies List. Angie's List has 2 Comptons listed: Compton's Tree and Yard Service and Compton's Tree Service. We chose the first one and contacted Joshua Harris. I asked if they had done work in our yard before and was told yes.

I asked them to give us an estimate for cutting down two yews, one holly tree and one dead willow tree and removing the stumps. Three people arrived at my house the next day; Brandi Williams, a young man named Justin and Brandi's 2 year old daughter. We were told that Joshua was sick that day but would be there the next time. We were given a price of $1,300 to do the work. Thinking that we were using the same Compton's we had always used, we agreed to let them do the work. In hindsight, I realize there were indications that these people were not related to the Compton's but they assured us they could do the work.

They cut the 2 yews and the holly and raised the maple trees. They left the debris in our side yard and arranged to come back in a day to remove. That day we gave them a check for $300 which they promptly cashed at our bank.

Within a couple of days they came back this time with Joshua Harris. They cut down the big willow tree and trimmed a few dead branches off an oak tree. The left all of the stumps and pushed part of the felled willow tree into our pond which we did not see until they had left. We gave them $800 that time which they promptly cashed at our bank. We held back $200 which we were to give them once the stumps had been removed.

They did not have a stump grinder with them either time but told us on one occasion it was broken and on another that it had to be rented.

They never showed up again and never called. I have called them several times and asked them to finish the job to no avail. Each time I'm told they are waiting for the stump grinder and will come finish the job once they have it.

We finally tracked down Compton's Tree Service and they have since come to our house and cleaned up Joshua Harris' mess.

It is important that a distinction is made between the two Comptons. On Joshua Harris' business card it says Harris's Tree Service. I'm not sure how they have ended up as Compton's Tree and Yard Service on your site but it needs to be fixed. Compton's Tree Service out of Culpeper is a very professional company and very honorable. They also do excellent work.

On the other hand, Harris's Tree Service aka Compton's Tree and Yard Service, lied to us and cheated us and their work was mediocre at best.

I notice that you do not have an address for Joshua Harris. If anyone knows where they live, I would appreciate it as I intend to send them a 1099-MISC for the money we paid them.

Compton's did a great job, and I believe I received a very reasonable price. The three trees we removed were fairly large (not giant oaks, but they were wide and over 35 feet tall), and they were also very close to our house. They were very professional, removing all the limbs and then taking the tree down a bit at a time in order to avoid damaging our house. They disposed of all the excess material as well. They were happy to trim back our trees, including taking off very large limbs that were at least 50 feet up and overhanging our house. We negotiated the price, and I felt that I was treated very fairly. I only gave them a B for professionalism because the gentleman I spoke with on the phone and in person didn't necessarily present himself in the most professional manner. Don't get me wrong, he was courteous and fine to deal with, just not quite as professional as I would have preferred. Still "above average." The work was done so well and so quickly, that the minor ding on professionalism isn't really worth mentioning. I only mention it in case others have a concern with their "laid back" attitude - it did not affect their work in the slightest, and I was extremely happy with the service we received.
