The finished product is beautiful.  The retaining wall was built approximately five feet from the pool.  That gave us four feet of useable grassy real estate on that side of the pool along with a foot wide flower bed the length of the wall.  The wall was well-built with suitable drainage, that does not impact our neighbors or us.  We would use Hemax again - They were very professional and responsive for the most part.  The entire project was completed within the timeframe allotted even though we had  a lot of rain during that period.
We did have one small problem with Hemax and another with Fairfax Country:
1.  In reviewing the contract, my son found that the wall was only to be three feet tall.  He went out and measured and sure enough that height would still leave an soil erosion problem.  We brought this up with Hemax.  Hemax felt that three feet was sufficient - but if not, would make the wall higher.  Three feet was not sufficient.  Hemax raised the wall another foot and that was perfect.   Except that it cost an additional $1,650.
2.  Fairfax County indicates that a retaining wall of our height requires a fence or a 'fence of shrubs'.  We decided to go with shrubs and looked to the Fairfax County website for guidance.  There was information regarding the mature height that the shrubs needed to be - but that was about it.  So, instead of selecting what we liked, spending the money to have the plantings put in, and then finding out they were insufficient, we contacted Fairfax County.  Fairfax County indicated that NOTHING was required because our retaining wall was not beside a walk way.  So, we went with nothing and the completed wall passed inspection.

They did a great job. I like their quality work, they're extremely good at communication, their office people were wonderful, kept us informed the whole way. We couldn't be happier. We decided to use them because they are on Angie's List and that they're local.

Went fantastic, they were challenged with getting the job in during all the rain we were having, but first good day, they were in and completed most of the work.  Had to come back to finish up running the extension for the gutter, but that went well too.  Overall, the price was very Fair, work was excellent and will definitely hire them back when needed.  Their team are some of the most professional and friendly groupI've dealt with.

Very professional job from start to finish. Henry arrived for an estimate and walked the property with me listening to my concerns and proposing solution choices. When we agreed on the best course of action, Henry was able to measure the distance that the drainage tubing would need to run and within a few minutes provide me with a very good ball park estimate of the total cost. Later that day, he mailed me the official proposal that included the Angie's List discount and was a bit lower than his earlier figure.

The work took the crew two full days and drove home to me how glad I was that I had not tried to do any of this myself. They ran into rocks, boulders, and tree roots as much as five inches in diameter. It was tough digging but they kept at it and made it look routine. It rained off and on a couple of times heavy enough as to where I would not have complained if they had called it a day. They stuck it out and either worked thru the rain or waited in the truck for the downpour to subside.

The crew did a great job cleaning up and removing all debris, replacing the displaced sod, and remulching any land scraping disturbed by the digging. We got a heavy thundetstorm soon after the work was done and the French drain works like a champ with absolutely no puddling on my front walk. After work started on the first day I asked if they could move three irrigation sprinkler heads in a little bit as I think they were a little too close if not on my neighbors property. HEMAX modified the contract to include the additional work at a very nominal cost and completed the work on schedule with the rest of the project. Highly satisfied with HEMAX and would highly recommend their services.

The process was great! Henry put together a great proposal and was very flexible. The team was on time, did a great job and everything was nice and clean. We're still very happy with the job they did.

Right from the start, meeting with Henry for an initial consult and estimate was a really pleasant experience. He was a straight shooter, didn't try to upsell or go above and beyond what we were looking to spend.  He was honest about the state of our lawn and what would be required to get it looking healthy again. Same for the paver patio, we described what  we  were looking for and he gave me a nice catalog with lots of styles/shapes and colors to choose from (that I could keep!)  He also provided a nice sketch of the patio, which was great, considering other companies refused to provide any drawings or catalogs until they had a signed proposal. He was friendly and knowledgeable and clearly had a lot of experience. He also gave us the best estimate out of the 4 other companies I met with prior. There's a reason why the reviews for Hemax are so high, and I couldn't agree more. 
The entire staff was friendly, from scheduling appointments with the office staff, to the hardworking and punctual workers who arrived at 8:00 am every morning, and worked until 8:00 pm every evening - ensuring the two projects stayed on track. The sodding and patio took a total of 3.5 days to complete and we couldn't be happier. We receive tons of compliments from our neighbors and friends and we're happy to refer them to Hemax. I found HEMAX at the end of the street repairing the brick sidewalk that another company had installed.  Once I spoke with Henry (one of the owners) I knew I had to go with them.  They are  honest, and hard working, and the quality of work can not be matched by any other company in the area.  I am so very pleased that HEMAX took care of all our landscaping needs.  Living in Occoquan and on a side of a hill was what I thought was a challenge, but after HEMAX did what they do best, my yard looks like a picture out of a magizine and the best thing is that it still looks that way three years later!!!!!!

I contacted HEMAX through their website to provide an estimate for laying sod for my townhouse front yard.  It only took two business days for the company to come out, survey, and provide a written estimate.  The estimate was substantially lower than the other two proposals I received.  Tatiana, the assistant manager, was my primary point of contact from the estimate through job completion.  I cannot say enough about her customer service and project management skills.  The crew came out and did a fantastic job removing the existing soil, grading, and laying the sod.  Of particular note was the cleanup.  When they left, you would never had known they were there.  Within two weeks of laying the sod, the weather went from 60 to the low 90s, and we received torrential rain.  I was concerned about the health of the new sod and asked if someone could take a look at it.  As promised, a representative came out and examined the sod.  Additionally, I received an email from the company during the heat wave with additional instructions for maintaining the lawn during the heat - nice touch.  The sod has been in place for about 6 weeks and it looks incredible.  I cannot be more impressed with the sod; and especially, the way Tatiana managed the project from start to finish.

Extremely pleased with workmanship!  They followed the contracts precisely.  Removed and disposed of existing concrete step for rectangular landing. Excavated and prepared area for new concrete walkway and rectangular landing, installing and compacting a new 3" deep #57 gravel sub base prior to pouring concrete and installed a pre-welded 6"x6" steel wire mesh to provide tension reinforcement for the new concrete walkway and landing. They framed and installed a new 4" thick concrete walkway and landing.  The walkway and landing were poured at 3,500 psi mix with optimal strength rating achieved in 28 days. The new flagstone walkway, landing and porch received an acid wash and power wash 4-5 days after flagstone work was finished.  A #4 rebar was installed into existing porch concrete slab to prevent new step from separating from porch slab.  The 2 new steps installed measure 5" high.  
They notified Miss Utility.  The work was supervised and completed in a timely and professional manner.  Job site was cleaned up daily and all debris and excess materials were removed on job completion.  No heavy vehicles or equipment were stationed on driveway as per my request.   
Their price and quality of the workmanship exceeded my expectations as well as the coloration of the flagstone installed.  Was pleased with the workmen who not only were friendly but very accomplished with the scope of the work and answered all my questions.  Neighbors all commented on the "beautiful" look created with rich tones.   Mr. Henry Cruz  was a pleasure to work with and gave thoughtful suggestions during the whole process.    

We have used Hemax for large projects in the past and chose to use them again based on the outstanding service, quality of product, and reasonable price. 
From our initial contact with Henry he came to meet us at our residence at a time that was convenient for us.  We discussed details of the project and went over what was important to us and how we envisioned the project when completed. 
Henry promptly came back a couple days later with a proposal and drawing of the walkway and landing. 
We indicated that we were eager to start - and Hemax was able to get us schedule only a week later. 
The Hemax crew worked very hard from sunrise to sunset - even through several rain storms!
At the end of the project, Hemax came out and returned the worksite to its previous condition. 
We are once again very happy with the work performed and the quality of craftsmanship. 
We will definitely use Hemax again for future projects!

I called Henry for an appointment to discuss my project needs and get his suggestions. He was very responsive and showed up exactly on time for our (early morning) appointment. He listened carefully as I explained my request for a patio of brick-colored pavers, and the explanation about my water drainage issues. We talked about my price limit for the work. Henry took measurements. He drew a sketch of how my patio and new landscaping around the patio would look, and gave me a general estimate. He included all the elements I requested and provided photos of similar jobs done by Hemax. Henry followed up quickly with a detailed written estimate and drawing (by email). A few weeks went by as I talked with my husband about the timing and cost of the project. We made a few small adjustments to the contract, signed it, and mailed it to Henry. We scheduled the work for after Mother's Day. Henry had Miss Utility come out and mark our lot, checked to see id there were HOA restrictions related to this job, and confirmed with me the start date. He estimated the project would take four to five days full time to complete. His few arrives on that Monday morning as promised. The first day included excavation work, laying a trench to divert water from the two downspouts, and the beginning of preparation of layers of sand and gravel as foundation to the pavers. The workers all seemed to be very skilled. They worked tirelessly and for long hours each day. They totally cleaned up the work site and our driveway at the end of each day. The one problem I encountered was quickly dealt with by a crew chief. The job was fully completed, to our satisfaction, five days. My husband and I are quite pleased with our new patio and the landscaping work done by Hemax. We will use them in the future for landscaping/construction work and strongly recommend them to others.

HEMAX (Henry and Max) Constructions Services and Landscaping LLC was a pleasure to work with.  My initial contact with the company was by email and I provided a general description of what I was looking to do.  I received a reply the next day with a note that Henry would be in the area in the next day or so and would take a look at the property and let me know what they could do.  The next day I was surprised to find an email with a very detailed description of what they could do and what the price would be.  I was very impressed with the level of detail when we hadn't even spoke in person.  Because of this initial, very professional, very thorough presentation of services, I arranged to meet with Henry to go over the desired effort in more detail.  Henry was very courteous and professional and offered several ideas that I had not considered previously.  Due to our conversation and his professional advice, I decided to add a significant amount of stone work to the effort.  
Once I agreed to do the work, his office made all the arrangements with Ms Utility and scheduled the work.  The crew arrived on time and was very professional throughout the effort.  The crew did not rush, but took the time needed to do the job right.  I was super impressed by the stonework of Hector.  The stone garden walls are exquisite and exceeded my expectations.  After each day's work the crew cleaned everything up so my property retained a very neat appearance while the work was being done.  As the effort progressed, I was so impressed that I actually decided to do additional work.  Each time, a change order was created that described exactly what would be done and we jointly agreed before proceeding.
I would definitely recommend HEMAX for any of your landscaping requirements and I will use them again for future projects we have been discussing.

We have a townhouse backyard, which is small, and fenced in.  Half the yard was brickwork and the other half was a mix of soil/grass area with various plants and weeds and a large area completely filled in with small pebbled.  My husband and I wanted to have the pebbles picked up, carried away and the area prepped for us to plant and design ourselves.
HEMAX answered my husband's phone call very quickly and gave a decent estimate.  My husband was a former landscaper/gardener, so he knew what was a fair price.  They were able to schedule the work very quickly and it was done in less than half a day.  They did exactly what we asked them to do.  We plan to use them again when it's time to rennovate the front area of our townhome.  We have to receive HOA approval for that portion, so we need to wait.
I want to say how excellent their customer service is.  We have a neighbor who is quite a pill and happens to be on the end unit and does not have a fence.  This is one of the joys of being in a townhouse community.  HEMAX needed to go around her yard to take out the large collection of pebbles and bring in soil. They made a best guess estimate of where her property line ended and where the community/open grassy area began.  In my opinion they did a fine job.  The neighbor saw wheelbarrow marks around her property and accused us of tresspassing on her property and destroying her grass.  The grass was not 'destroyed' but flattened and barely at that.  We told her the company we used did it and honestly didn't see a problem with it. 

Long story short, I called the HOA and found out it is completely acceptable to cross a neighbors yard in order to get work done and the HOA said she needs to show proof it was in fact her property line.  If she cannot prove that, there is no case.  I also called HEMAX, apologized profusely for my neighbor and told them the entire story.  They asked for the HOA contact number and also the name of the neighbor.  I didn't have a phone number.  They agreed to stop by the house and offer to mow the lawn to help the look of the grass.  I appreciate HEMAX trying to do what they can to smooth over our pill of a neighbor for crossing what really isn't her property to begin with and working with our HOA.

They were the best company I ever worked with they were polite and worked so hard. The area was cleaned up each day before they left and all their equipment was removed daily. Every piece of grass they had to remove was picked up they replanted all my plants and mulched the flower beds. They did so many extra things that they knew would make my yard look better and did not charge me for all the extras. 
I highly recommend this company the office staff and workers were always there to answer any questions that came up and they kept me aware of the progress when needed.
At first I thought "Boy this a lot of Money" however I truly got a great value for every penny I spent and then some. I would hire them again and in fact I have already contacted them for additional work on my ward.

This is our 3rd time using Hemax and we will continue to do so. They do great work and go above and beyond what is expected. My yard always looks fantastic when they are done. Planning on a spring clean up, mulching and work on a back walk way that always gets muddy and I know they will do a good job.

We have lived in our house for about 2 years and are doing the repairs/maintenance needed on a house that is almost 60 years old. We originally thought the grading, landscaping, and waterproofing was going to be a small project in one area of the yard. However, when we started looking closely at things with Henry and telling him about the water and moisture problems we were experiencing, he recommended excavating the foundation to check for cracks and do any necessary waterproofing. One area went fine, in the other area, the excavation revealed a drainage nightmare. The drain pipes that were installed at some point in the past, were not the right kind for drainage (no holes, no filter material, no gravel inside) so they were completely filled with solid debris. Because of the property slope and placement of the garage in relation to the house, we needed to install a drainage system that would carry the water around the garage. across the driveway, to the back end of our property. 
Henry and his team were extremely professional, hardworking, and knowledgeable. Yes, the expense was more than we planned, but there was absolutely no doubt in our minds that it was necessary once the excavation revealed the problems. Even so, Henry was very kind and apologetic about the situation, and he had his team do extra excavation and gravel removal without charging us. He kept us updated at least twice a day on the progress and either he or his foreman consulted with us on every decision that would impact us in the future (such as where to put the excess topsoil, gravel, etc.). We were astounded at how quickly the job was completed and how meticulous they were about the cleanup and restoration process. 
What could have been a traumatic, nightmarish experience was a smooth, seamless project. We look forward to working with Henry and the Hemax team again in the near future on the design and installation of a new patio.

Henry was always very cordial and responsive, and gave very accurate estimates for all work to be performed.  He was extremely accommodating to anything I requested, and worked it in in the least expensive way.  The workers were always on time, they were hard workers who did a very thorough job, and were always cordial.  All of the work was done to my satisfaction.

I simply can't say enough great things about this company.  From the time I called and requested an estimate, to the time of the final walk-through, everyone was extremely professional, responsive, and completely focused on delivering a quality product.  The owners, Henry and Max, were both exceptional.  They?re very knowledgeable and passionate about the work they do and it clearly shows.  It was also great to have one of them always on the scene and available to answer any questions.  Their office assistant, Riccy, was friendly, helpful, and a real pleasure to work with as well.  Their crew was very punctual with an amazing work ethic and they took great pride in their work...basically treating my property as if it was their own which really made me feel comfortable.  In fact, I was so impressed with the overall experience, I asked them do more work on my property which they have already completed beyond my level of satisfaction.  Bottom line, HEMAX definitely exceeded my expectations, and if the ratings for Angie?s List would allow an A+, they would certainly get one from me.

We had an old slate patio over concrete that was cracked, etc, and did not drain.  HEMAX replaced the entire patio and installed a drainage system.  Their work was made difficult as there was no way to get equipment to the patio.  All materials had to be hand carried to the patio.  All excavation work had to be hand-done.  We have gone thru several storms and have had a dry patio w/in a few hours of the storm.
The work was done very professionally.  The work area was cleaned every day.  All sod was replaced. 

Beyond Excellent!!  I cannot recommend this company enough.  They were extremely professional from the moment Henry came out to give an estimate to the crews finishing the work.  They were punctual, efficient and did an extremely thorough job!  They went above and beyond in making sure they finished the jobs and left the property better than they found it!  We will definitely use this company again!

They performed all the work as scheduled and at the cost that was quoted.  They did  exceptional work and actually went a beyond expectations!   They removed two trees that had been planted too close to the house, and took out all the overgrown shrubs. They worked with us to design new landscaping.  After the type of scrubs and plants were decided on they came out and did an amazing job planting and mulching.  They also did some extra clearing and weeding on the other side of the house.  I would definitely recommend them!

Toney and his team were professional, reliable and kept me informed of events as the job was underway. They replanted small bushes and plants where the hedges had been and added a pattern to my walkway, putting the slate "steps" in a cool, curvy pattern that is very attractive. The porch and walkway look amazing. Neighbors gushed.  
Hemax did a great job. I recommend them highly and I plan to use them again.
