Upon installation, it was noted that there was a hairline surface crack at the thinnest point in the granite behind the sink. We were assured that this crack would not worsen and could be easily disguised with a permanent black marker if it became noticeable. They also told us that the granite would not match if they installed a new piece in this area. Not demanding that they install a new piece of granite was our biggest mistake in retrospect and we have been dealing with the consequences ever since. In 2004, Granitech provided us with a "special provision" to our standard warranty transferable to a future owner of our home providing for repair or replacement. This was in response to our concern that this crack would become an issue when we try to sell our home and we would be forced to replace all of the kitchen granite or reduce the price of our home. In the subsequent years, we have had Granitech out on several occasions to "repair" this area with sealant, which needless to say, has worsened in appearance over time. As of now, the crack is deepened to the point that small chunks of granite are chipping away. Our last interaction with Granitech was in the fall of 2013 when the owner came out. He told us that the special warranty was provided by a former partner and essentially accused us of lying about the cause of the crack. We take full responsibility for our naivete in accepting the hairline crack in the first place but want to caution all prospective buyers that Granitech is a company that will NOT stand behind it's product or warranty. This is something we are reminded of everyday as we stand at our kitchen sink (please see photo)!
surfaces would have to be level with each other. 2) The existing tile partial back-splash would be replaced with full granite back-splash, which meant possible adjustments where the door and window frames would meet the new back-splash,
since the granite would be thicker than the tile. 3) We did not want to replace our high grade stainless steel sinks nor the bar faucet. Virtually every contractor we talked to, including Granitech, said that there was a 99% chance we would have to purchase new sinks as the old ones would not come out without significant damage. 4) We wanted to get the contract signed in January but schedule the work for mid-July to be completed no later than the first week of August.
We got more than three estimates for the work and went to numerous stone showrooms to search for a slab of Red Levanto marble for the dining area and a suitable granite for the kitchen and back-splash. Our Granitech representative, Yavuz Yilmaz, worked with us as we developed the scope of work and thought through the problems. In January, we agreed on the price and contract work and asked to schedule the job for July.
We had to call in early July to learn about the schedule, which the and quot;project supervisor, and quot; George, sent to us. We were quite
skeptical that the work would actually be completed in 6 business days, but it was. Also, friends warned about the dust and mess from kitchen projects, so we purchased and quot;paintersand quot; plastic sheeting and draped most of the kitchen and downstairs areas ourselves. We are not sure if Granitech would have done such an extensive preparation. However, their work was much neater than we had expected, and they used vacuums to minimize the debris and dust.
Kudos for: 1) Completing the work on schedule and budget to our satisfaction. The scheduled work moved right along and we were only without running water for one day. 2) Saving the sinks. This meant a lot to us. 3) Coming up with a solution for the kitchen window frame and trim in the dining room, which was to use the granite and marble respectively, instead of
replacement wood trim. The effect is terrific. 4) Finishing the details which included putting trim underneath the dishwasher and disposal, since there was a new gap as a result of leveling the granite.
Were we able to, we would rate the Quality of work as a B+ or A-, or a Very Good. However, we rated the Quality of work as Good rather than Excellent because we are not sure how things might have turned out had we not been watching the work very carefully, prepared our rooms anticipating a lot of dust and debris, and reminding Granitech of some details. 1) Granitech put cardboard down on the ceramic floors but we put up the painters plastic ahead of time. Therefore, we do not know what precautions Granitech would have taken to cover the cabinets, shelves, etc. On the other hand, Granitech used vacuums as they removed the tiles, which must have minimized the dust. They also left the room clean at the end of each day. 2) We emphasized our desire to re-use the sinks and insisted that they at least try to remove them carefully. This probably influenced the positive outcome. 3) Granitech was preparing to install replacement wood trim around the window immediately after removing the counter top. We had to intervene to tell them that this could not be done before installing the full back-splash as the trim had to be built out to meet the back-splash. As it later turned out, Granitech recommended using granite around the window to a MUCH better effect. 4) We reminded the installers where to use the elastomeric sealant and that we did not want them to use glue for the piece against the refrigerator. We are not certain they would have attended to this detail without our reminder. 5) During the final and quot;punch outand quot; work, Granitech had the incorrect paint type and color for the touch up and no one asked about the color. We resolved the problem by purchasing semi-gloss touch up paint and touching up the walls ourselves. 6) One of the smaller back-splash pieces where there is an under counter light was not perfectly measured to the right of the light so if one stoops to look carefully, one can see about 1/8th inch gap. Fortunately, this is not a serious or noticeable problem.
In summary, we are very pleased with the outcome and would recommend their work with the general caveat for any kind of project like this --- the owner is also responsible for paying close attention to details.
i called Granitech from Marble Systems, a wholesale granite /marble distributor. I spoke to a young lady named Jennifer Kaiser at Granitech and told her I had just picked out a piece of granite and wanted to discuss the price of installation in my home. By the time I had left Marble Systems and arrived at Granitech, Jennifer had already calculated the expenses for me. She continued to assist me with selecting an upgraded sink etc. to meet my needs. Ever transaction was recorded in their computer and copies were given to me of all paperwork immediately. Everything worked like clock work. From start to finish I could of had my countertop installed in about 7-10 days. However, because of my schedule it was installed in 2 weeks. which is still light years faster than the other 8 places I had researched. I had researched a total of 9 companies, had 3 contractors come to my home for estimates and Granitech's customer service outshined everyone of the others. Hands down they are the best granite company out there!! They are attentive to details, follow-up questions and needs and all of the customer's needs and concerns.
I highly recommend Granitech!
Regarding the actual installation, Ismael and his crew were prompt and polite. They worked with us during the process and even helped us make a couple of changes to our orignal plan. The kitchen was finished in just under 2 weeks and more than meets our expectations.
We also had GraniTech replace our stair rail and bannister. It was the old 1970s iron and they replaced it with wood. The wood work was beautiful! My only small complaint would be that they weren't quite as clean as the guys who did the kitchen. I had to really vacuum my stairs to get little splinters out, but overall we are very pleased.
The bathroom remodel was much smoother and stayed on schedule.
We are please with the overall experience and would use Granitech again, just so long as they provide us a different sub contractor/laborer.
