Auto Tires
I ordered Tires of the internet and was looking for a place to have them installed. I could have used Merchant Tire & Auto in Salem VA (and should have) because they have a cotnract to install from the Co. I bought the tires. But I saw Quality Tire SVC and thought I'd throw a local guy some business. Its a two guy operation, with basic tools, air tools and floor jacks. The price was average for a 4 tire install and they were efficient in their work. The issue that resulted in the C review was the tire balancing. When I left and eventually ended up on the highway I noticed a shake around 62-65 MPH which is typical of tires being out of balance. I was a tire buster at Sears for 4 years during college so I have some knowledge of mounting and balancing tires. When I looked at the inside of the tires I observed wheel weights on opposite sides of the wheels, which tells me that they couldn't get the tires to balance after the first spin. This is the lazy way to balance a tire. The proper way is to remove all the weights, and start over. You can slide the weights on the rim to attain proper balancing without throwing extra weights on the rim. I had to bring my truck into the Dealer for service so I just paid them to balance the tires properly. I am sure I could have brought it back to Quality but if they didn't do ti right the first time, I'm not going to stand there and argue with them about doing it properly the second time. I don't know if it was laziness, or the tire wasn't set up correctly on the balancer or the tire balancer isn't calibrated. $60 lesson to just got with the franchise operation that has modern equipment that is probably kept in spec. I should have better inspected the job when it was completed.
