Based on the 1st job, I contracted him for a 2nd job and OH BOY was my 1st impression of having a good contractor to utilize for future work skewed. Lesson Learned, I am not trying to bash his work because when he does it, it is good, but NOTE TO ALL, If you decide to go with his services DO NOT PAY upfront. He will constantly ask for money, then once its paid here comes the flurry of excuses as to why he cant be there at the time he specified. To give you a timeline, I had additional work that I paid him for in October 2013, Today, September 2014, the work still isn't don't. I have had months of "we'll be there" and months of no call, no shows. After ALMOST A YEAR of this, I decided my only recourse was small claims court because what I was told is that "IT IS NOT MY POLICY TO GIVE REFUNDS" by Mr. Furrow. My level of confidence for his work has quickly changed from a point where I was willing to put about $40,000 worth of work through him to never dealing with him again. I'm just glad that I am dealing with $1000 vs. $40,000. Note that he still refuses to refund this amount and after almost a year of unprofessional no call, no shows after his scheduling appointments, I refuse to have him do any work. So now I have had to file a civil case in small claims court to attempt to recover the money I paid to him almost a year ago. But when he does do work, it is good. If you choose to roll the dice, note is to ensure that the majority of the payment is paid WHEN THE WORK IS COMPLETED. If you pay before, buyer beware. Review some of the comments on home advisor and you will see kind of similar experiences.
"This customer had a contract with us for 2 sections, a slab and a retaining wall. We came out and excavated with machinery and them framed up for the slab to be poured, the customer then changed his mind and having the slab done so we continued to the retaining wall and completed. Our contracted payments are for 45% deposit, 45% material drop and 10% upon final completion. The customer paid in full and was happy with the project completion. Afterwards the customer wanted a refund. We explained that we do not offer refunds especially after job is completed and material cost, machinery and labor was paid out. We offered the customer a discount of any further contracted work. The work he says that has been taking a year to get done was being done as a favor to him ( burying pipes) and we told him we would not be able to get to them until we were free and able to do so. With the winter so bad, business has been very hectic this year and we have not had a free moment to complete yet. We have done many things for him at no cost already and since we have not gotten to this for him he feels he has to complain."
Sunfire (Brian Furrow): Concrete
- Follow up was excellent, even called if going to be late
- Foreman on sight was knowledgeable and friendly
- Was informed of every detail and address our concerns (the contract was very through)
- Plants/shrubs that needed to be moved were moved and placed where we wanted them
- Excess gravel was taken away and brought back where needed due to the difference in height of concrete and ground.
- Expansion joints, mesh and rebar was used in the concrete
- The concrete and brick are level (no elevation difference)
- Presented new ideas on how to make improvements to the project
- Presented ideas on how to cut costs
Mike Furrow: Brick
- Presented various brick patters to create different affects to enhance the appearance
- Presented ideas on how to cut costs
- Excellent follow-up
- Excellent craftsmanship
** Will use again if need future concrete or brick work done.
** If anything changes we will provide updates.
The front stoop on our home was cracked and sunken in on one side. Brain gave a competitive quote that fell into the middle range of the quotes received but I felt comfortable with his explanation of the work that needed to be done. On the first day of demolition, his crew found the steps weren?t built as was originally thought. The steps had thick concrete poured throughout instead of being block underneath which made the job more labor intensive. Removal took longer than planned because of this but it was to be expected on how the previous steps were built. Even though the work was more involved than originally quoted but they completed the job with no added cost to me. Brian and his crew did an excellent job and I would highly recommend them for a job.
First, responsiveness was superb. I called and they came with an estimate within hours. I had four estimates and each was providing slightly diffident quality of materials or "free add ons." So I went back to each for modified estimates on the exact same work and materials.
Second, of the four, two never responded to my request. Sunfire provided almost instantaneous response by email even of Sunday and after hours. In the end, they were the most expensive of the two, but they left us with the highest degree of confidence that they could and WOULD do what they promised.
Third, they were the only ones who was going to install actual brick borders as opposed to stamped borders. In fact they even recommended styling the driveway border to match the design in the existing sidewalk. If fact, they changed my current bricks to be the exact as the driveway.
So, we went with Sunfire and have not had a second thought. The team was prompt, clean, and very polite. They were careful to not damage anything and when they departed it was hard to tell that had worked there. In fact, they did such a good job backfilling that my landscaper had almost nothing to do saving me money in the end.
There was no hidden cost or surprise expenses at project completion.
This is the ONLY rating where I have given a perfect mark and they certainly earned it. In fact, we are considering have them do an upgraded pool apron costing around $25,000+
Only hire them if you want your work completed on time, on budget, and to perfection. That is the only thing I have seen them do.
They cleaned up everything and left no mess behind.
They were always here when they said they would be and got it all done in three days. They were very good with their communication.
