The problem in this situation was simply a sticking damper valve which was preventing flow of cool air to part of the house when called for.  I had noticed a problem the preceding night and placed the call to HVAC about 6:00am and was surprised when a person actually answered the phone. She scheduled the technician for later in the day.
The tech called ahead to confirm his arrival and showed up on time.  He diagnosed the problem very professionally, I thought, and checked the damper motor to confirm it was operating properly.  He confirmed the damper was then free to operate.
This company installed the HVAC system in 2006 and has since serviced it one time several years ago.  At that time in the heat of the summer season, we had a similar problem with delivery of cold air to certain parts of the house.  I called HVAC in the middle of the night and was surprised that a technician was available on the phone to help me diagnose the problem.  He was very helpful in determining the problem (again, another malfunctioning damper or damper motor) over the phone as I followed his directions.  
That availability and response is very impressive.

I invested a lot of money in geothermal heat pump system. I have had multiple problems since the installation was completed in 2008. It routinely breaks down 2-3 times each year. HVAC would come out and fix it but never addressed the overall fact that the system was not performing as expected and was defective. After the last repair, I refused to pay their labor charges for replacement of a part under warranty. When the system stopped working again (6 weeks later) I called to request a service. I was told they would get back to me. After not hearing back, I called and was told that their company was no longer willing to service my unit and I should call some one else. I did so. And then found out the parts that HVAC had installed were substandard and not surprisingly had failed. I also found there were other aspects that are standard on installation that was not installed on my unit.
