100% Reccomend to anyone who needs a structural enginner. Chris is best structural engineer I have ever met! Valid license with the city so knows the code and standards. I needed him to verify what a previous structural engineer said was all cosmetic fire damage, in a home I was considering buying, was actually a huge strutural damage that needed full replacement of 8 joists and reconstruction of the entire shingle roof. He crawls into the crawlspaces and gets to every detail. Fun fact, biggest problem is usually moisture and that is actually bad drainage, so if youre reading this check where the water goes from your gutter spouts and hope its going 15ft away from your home. I highly recomend his services for any structural enginnering concerns, aka your attics/roof your beams/joists, and your crawlspace/basement. Any cracks inside your house as well.

Scheduling and site survey went fine. They required the $600 payment upon completion of the survey. The drawings were supposed to be provided within 3-5 days. It has been 16 days and they have not returned my email or call.

Justin and Charlie were both personable and knowledgeable. They explained clearly why my foundation was sagging and how to prevent further damage. In addition to easing my mind by assuring me that my house was not going to collapse, they also provided me with a schematic for a new drainage system that I may be able to install myself.

The guys from Obsidian came for one issue that was a non-issue, and pointed out how water around my house was slowly damaging to the structure of the home. They did not try to sell me anything, and solely wanted me to understand how I could improve the water flow around my home. I am a gardener and they suggested a rain garden with the rerouting of my water, which was wonderful! They pointed out the damage, which was noticeable. The first structural engineering firm I had was all about sales, never pointed out the water issue, and said the cracks in the interior walls needed to be fixed immediately, and I could call JES. Obsidian was all about making sure my home stands in a healthy way for many years to come! They said the cracks in my walls were repaired prior to me moving in and had just reopened -- no big deal but normal settling (1963 home). They are honest and ethical and I would call them again in a heartbeat!

They were very professional and very thorough. They went over all of their findings that they were going to include in their written report and made sure I understood everything. They even made suggestions on how to improve things in the home that I had not even thought were a problem. I've had engineers want to charge much more and offer a whole lot less! Highly recommended.

We hired Obsidian to come out and see if we could do an addition off the back of our home in the Northside of Richmond, and to have them do a structural inspection of the home to see if anything else should be addressed. Charles and Chris were both extremely knowledgeable, thorough, thoughtful, and enjoyable to interact with during the whole inspection and in follow up. They provided me with solutions to help address the drainage around our property to help address some structural issues with our covered from porch and to help eliminate moisture from our basement and crawl space. They even indicated they would be willing to do the drafting for our addition at a significantly lower price than the architects we had interviewed. Definitely would recommend them for anyone seeking a structural engineering firm.
