The shoes that were resoled were done very well. I was very happy with the repair. The shoes I had stretched I can not tell with those yet they still felt the same but the lady at the store told me to wear them a couple of times before I determine how they fit. But the work was completed early and I received a call to pick them up! Very reasonably priced! I paid under $50.00! Would recommend again!

I brought in two items: tall boots that needed the zippers repaired, and a large duffle bag which we crammed way too much into and when we zipped it up the zipper pulled apart from the fabric.
They fixed both perfectly. You'd never know there was ever an issue! Great service -- great prices!!!

I decided to invest in a great pair of Frye boots to last a lifetime. I read some great reviews of Gus's and called them before even buying these boots to see if they could be stretched to fit my calf. I was told that they stretch boots all the time, they have done lots of work with Fryes, and it would be no problem to stretch them up to 1-2 inches. I bought the boots and brought them in. The woman came in from the back to talk to me about it and told me she could maybe stretch them 1/2". We decided together to increase the length of the V under the buckle and replace the leather behind it with some dark brown elastic to match the boot. She didn't even want to measure my calf to make sure the finished boot would fit. I left trusting she knew what she was doing, but I was really disappointed with the result. Around the edge of the leather inside the boot where the deeper cuts were made was what I can only describe as masking tape. I realize that it must need some reinforcement, but I thought this was a very poor choice as it looked unfinished, unpolished, and not the work of someone skilled in the craft. The idea of nice leather boots with masking tape next to my skin was just so wrong. Since I sew I put great value into the finishing of a garment, so I was really disappointed to see the lack of concern for the finishing of a gorgeous and expensive leather boot. In addition, the elastic that she used was rippled (from overstretching) and a few strands of the rubber threads from inside the elastic were sticking out from the boot--I kid you not. I couldn't believe this was acceptable to give to a customer. And in the end, they felt just as tight as they did originally. Since my friend kindly picked them up downtown for me, I could not discuss these issues immediately upon receipt, and I wasn't sure what would be accomplished by calling them or bringing them back except for more hassle and waiting. Honestly I didn't know how to say, "These look awful and now they are ruined," and I didn't trust them to have the skills to fix them right anyway.
Response from Gus's Shoe Repair
"For anyone contemplating investing in a pair of boot which they will be unable to even try on without major stretching, I hope it will be helpful to note, the most a boot can be stretched in the calves if apx. one quarter of an inch (1/4"), as I tell all my customers who ask. I I am more than willing (hassle free) to redo my work if not satisfied, when given an opportunity, provided the expectations of the repair can be realized. Alterations to leather footwear is not the same as making a dress. Adding elastic to a boot will affect the original design of the boot, if the level of comfort needed in order to make the boots wearable is between 1-2" or more. To state " the boots felt just as tight as they did originally" after elastic was added and "the elastic rippled from over stretching" to me would indicate a longer and wider piece of elastic would be needed and the boots altered accordingly. I know I have the skills to do what is needed to salvage the boots which she has not been able to wear comfortably and would welcome her return to my shop. Fall is just around the corner and boots are still in. Now would be a great time to get them fitted and ready to wear."

I had an outstanding experience and was very happy with the service and the quality of the work. I called and was able to negotiate next day service. The shoes ended up being ready even earlier then I expected and they called to remind me the shoes were available. I found Gus' because of Angie's List and have another great vendor relationship thanks to the list!

Both pairs were very clean when picked up and cost around $10.00 each. They estimated a week to finish the job and notified me 2 or 3 days early that the repair was done. So, very good time estimation. Plan to go back again.

Excellent. I located these people using Angie's list (thank you, someone). My experience with other places had not been good: one time the repaired shoes came back too small to wear; another time the half-sole repair became unglued and split. This time, I needed good work done because these were the Bruno Magli loafers I'd bought on sale at Saxon Shoes. Even at half-price they were $160! (No, I'm not OJ, but they are size 12). When they were ready I went to the shop and put them on right there. The work was perfect and they seemed to fit even better than they did when they were new, so I gave them the Johnston & Murphey shoes I'd worn into the store for the same treatment.

The heels on my pair of loafers were worn down very far. I dropped off my shoes, and Gus's had them ready the next day. I thought they did an excellent job, considering the very poor condition that I brought them in. The heels looked as good as new, and they had cleaned the rest of the shoe. I was very satisfied with the work they did.
