Ellis Landscaping had the highest customer rating on Angie?s List. He is very soft spoken, nice, and personable. He sounded like an honest worker. He might be wonderful in cutting the grass, but as a landscaper I would never hire him again. He came in, but left his crew here to sit in the rain. I had to bring them in to the garage to keep them from grounding. He left them for several hours and never bothered to come back until almost dark. He told me what he was going to do, and I agreed to the price. He came and made the biggest mess, so I had to call him back twice. He dug up my yard and told me he was going to get rid of the water grass, which I didn?t think was possible. He assured me he could do it, and he only dug up parts of the yard. He threw some seed down and walked away. He didn?t put anything over the seed or anything, and the first rain I had washed all the seed away. I called him back and told him to get some sod and re sod those areas. I told him that his work was ridiculous. He came back and laid the sod, but didn?t pat it down. He told me that he would rototill those areas, but he didn?t do that. He put sod over hard ground and walked away. I was totally disappointed and disgusted with them.

They did a good job and were very timely. There were certain things that they said were not appropriate and professional.

Excellent results. It looks like a brand new lawn.

Very well. The two times i called him he answered and spoke to me then - no messages or phone tag. Work had to be postponed a few days due to heavy rain but understandable. The work is done and I"m happy with it; won't know final results until spring but very optimistic.

The experience was OK. He was very nice and did a great job with the yard. If it wasn't for the price, I would hire him. Hopefully in the future, that will be possible.

Great. Right now I have the best looking yard in the neighborhood. My neighbor was quite impressed, since he thinks I am constantly fighting to get grass to grow. Even though I have had professional service for years, this is the best my yard has looked ever.

The experience was great. I spoke to Mr. Ellis on a Tuesday and my yard was aerated by the weekend.

They were prompt and did a great job.

The crew did a great job- very meticulous and nicely cleaned up. They came again as promised in 2 weeks and we now have a regular arrangement. I am a very satisfied customer.

After interviewing four other landscapers all of whom said that we could not grow grass under the canopy of trees that surround our house, we were a little skeptical of Mr. Ellis's claims. He said that within two weeks we would have grass. We negotiated a deal that limited our risk and gave him the opportunity to make good on his claim which he did. Now, a little over a month after he initially seeded the lawn, we are looking forward to the first mowing. Kudos to Mr. Ellis for delivering on his promise and finnishing the work on-time and on-budget. And his second in command, Jose, was also very helpful along the way.

Fantastic! I called him Tuesday morning, he was there that evening for the estimate, and when our plans were finalized, his crew began some of that work the very same evening! The next 2 days were a whirlwind of activity and now, Thursday evening, the work has been completed. Mr Ellis and his crew were professional, approachable, extremely hard-working, and all had a smile on their faces when ever I came around. They were veryrespectful and took obvious pride in their work. I do not understand the previous review dated 7/1. I read it before I called Mr Ellis for his estimate, but balanced that one review out with all the previous glowing A+ reports. I am very glad I ignored that one cranky review; Mr Ellis and his team ROCKS! There is no way we could have done this ourselves. Having a professional crew with all the heavy machinery to do the job right makes all the difference and was the only way to go for this large job.

UPDATE: The information below (provided by the service provider) is not true. We terminated this company's services effective 8/31/09. David Ellis is no longer working for us. I would also like to mention that David showed up at our home after our initial report was published (uninvited) and communicated his displeasure at our decision to publicly share our experience. He yelled (and I quote), "If you weren't happy with us, why didn't you just cancel our services? Why did you have to go and write a report about it?" We offered to extend his work for another month if he wanted to act on the feedback we provided, but told him we'd be more than happy to let him go if that was his choice. He continued to do work for us over the next 6 weeks. We still were not pleased with the quality of his care, including his tendency to only put in extra effort on the last Friday of each month (waiting to get his pay for the next month), so we terminated his employment on 8/31/09. Related to his comments that "you can't please everyone", we have enlisted Angie's services for at least 4 other contractors in the past 6 months. All have performed excellent work for us, so I don't believe it is our standards that is the issue here. Unless our expectations were too high in asking that David's crew not leave equipment on on property (unattended) for 3+ days, not smoke on our property, and clean up after ourselves, we don't see his point.

They have done a terrific job, were very punctual and they have taken great care of our yard. I highly suggest using this company for any of your lawn service needs. They had the best quote of people that I had contacted as well.

Mr Ellis delivered the estimate in a timely fashion. Due to the weather work was delayed but they came on the day that was subsequently agreed upon. The team completed the work in a very quick, but complete manner.

David and his crew work extremely efficiently and did exactly what we had agreed with David also providing additional points to consider and suggestions for additional work that should be completed. The suggestions were completely within the scope of what we wanted for the yard and indicated that he has a wonderful understanding of what should be done versus just "wanting to do extra work". David and his crew estimated two days for a large mulching and cleanup effort and completed everything discussed/agreed upon with hours to spare each day. This was not an over-estimate situation but that they work efficiently and with very little pause/wasted time. I highly recommend Ellis Landscaping for yard care and maintenance. We have a unique piece of property with a minimal amount of grass and a good deal of stonework and separated flower beds. The mulching that Ellis and crew completed was without damage to ANY existing foliage on a rather tricky hill. I am very satisfied with their work and am into the first month of maintenance. They were able to do all maintenance work within an hour of arrival and things look great!!

The work was done thoroughly and quickly and with minimal instruction or lead time.

I reviewed lawn services on a Sunday and called six that matched my criteria. Dave not only was the only one who answered his phone (this was not expected on a Sunday) but he came out within a few hours and gave me the estimate. He listened to what I wanted and made very appropriate suggestions for me to consider. He showed up when he said he would and completed the job as planned. I have retained his services for monthly maintenance of my lawn.

It took a little while for Mr. Ellis to start cutting our lawn. He was very busy in the early Fall and had to move back our start date once. Since then, Mr. Ellis has cut our lawn weekly. He and his crew are careful. This is important to me, and this is the reason that I started working with Mr. Ellis.

Mr. Ellis arrived on time for the initial consultation and was very professional. He did all of the work that I described to him. When my husband met him to look over the work, Mr. Ellis and his crew did a few more small tasks that I had forgotten to mention. We will use him again.

They do exceptional work for a very low price. They are also a very reliable company, coming on time and always keeping to their word. I would recommend them to anyone.

These guys are amazing. They have one guy on the riding mower while one of the others is trimming and the other one is using the leaf blower. It only takes the three guys fifteen minutes to do the lawn, but it always looks perfect. They are efficient, hard working, and dependable. They are the best, and I will keep using them.

He was very professional and he was very prompt. He was one of the few people I could get on very short notice. He brought a crew over almost immediately. They spent about two days working on the yard and did a very nice job. He asked questions along the way and made suggestions.

He responded to my call the same day and met me that evening to give an estimate. He was very personable. I put 50% down on the work to be done. He started the job the next day and completed all the work in 2 days. This was great because I had called another lawn service a month earlier and am still waiting for them to get back to me about when they can start the job. The yard looks wonderful; I'm so glad to be rid of the leaves and the mulched beds make the yard look much more finished. My single complaint was that he showed up unannounced at nearly 9 pm the night he finished the job to collect the balance due; I had already turned my porch light off and as a single woman, it is always a little disconcerting to have the doorbell ring unexpectedly after dark. I did discover, after he came by to collect the balance, that he had left me a voice mail message around 7pm asking how I liked the finished job. My phone was off because I had been in a meeting and I had forgotten to check messages; I did not get home until around 8 pm that night and planned to call him the next morning and just assumed that I would mail him the balance the next day. Delivery of the final payment was something we should have agreed upon up front.

It was amazing! My yard was in such disrepair before I called Ellis Landscaping. I really wanted to get the lawn seeded before winter, so I called Ellis in October. They came out and took a look. I was despondent and unsure that anyone could help. My lawn was mostly weeds at that point, and most of it was brown. The backyard was mostly dirt. I felt like even if they put down seed, it would be spring before I could see a difference. As soon as I talked with David Ellis, I felt so much better, he obviously knew a lot about different types of grass, and what kind I would need. After the Ellis crew aerated and put down the lawn seed, I watered the lawn twice a day, and within two weeks I was seeing grass come up! Within a month I could see a DRAMATIC difference in the front yard. The back yard was slower to come around, but it's such a difference. Ellis Landscaping has done other work for me since then, and I'd recommend them without hesitation.
