Maud Krulla was very friendly and informative when I called her and had firewood delivered to my home later in the same day, which happened to be a Saturday. I was worried I needed to have someone home for the delivery since I was afraid my driveway would be too small for the entire load and that some firewood would spill into the street. She said not to worry; her delivery guy would clean-up any spillage.
The firewood quality is excellent: clean and dry. I purchased a half-cord but can?t speak to the cost ($335) since I didn?t have time to comparison shop. I went with Maud strictly because of her high rating on Angie's List and my urgent need for firewood.
A half-cord of firewood is defined as 64 cubic feet of compactly stacked wood. When I stacked the delivery on my porch, it came in at 60.75 cubic feet, which is within about 5%. That was close enough for me.
She squeezed me into the schedule.
Showed up timely
She said the wood was a "Mix" of seasoned and partially seasoned and advised I add the partially seasoned after getting the fire going with the fully seasoned.
It was more partially seasoned than it was fully seasoned and many of the pieces were large and oddly shaped, making stacking difficult.
The real problem is that the firewood is of terrible quality, and doesn't appear to be properly seasoned. It simply won't catch fire, even when it's been kept covered and dry. When it smolders a little, you can literally hear the water in the wood boiling off. It also smokes badly (presumably filling the chimney flue with soot) before if goes out. Won't be ready for use until next year at least, if ever.
Maud returned my call within the hour and brought the wood over the same day. Having never purchased wood before, I hired her based on the reviews on this site. At the time I had no idea how much a cord of wood and stacking should cost, nor how time consuming the stacking is. Now a few weeks later, the wood is still sitting on our lawn getting soaked in the rain. I have since spoken to many other people to find that we were totally over charged and that a cord of wood should cost half of what we paid, including stacking (for which Maud wanted another $200). Maud was a lovely person as all the other reviewers have written and extremely responsive, but based on the price I would never hire her again.
Update: We have now had a chance to try the wood twice and both times it was extremely hard to get a fire started. Even with a starter log, it took a while. The wood had been in our enclosed porch for weeks, so I am not sure why it didn't burn. In addition, after we stacked all the wood, I discovered that Maud had dumped not only the wood on our lawn, but a ton of rocks that must have been in her truck. Hence the sod we laid down in the spring is completely ruined where all the rocks are. Definitely not happy.
Delivery was within estimated time frame, with an advance call to inform.
Very careful about surrounding property during delivery, dumping and stacking.
The price was very competitive with other options unlike formerly commented here; quality probably much higher.
Maud also offered free advice on quite a number of questions I had on the yard and trees.
I heartily recommend her services, knowing I will reach to her year after year for a variety of services.
I called Blue Ridge Oak Farm after reading another member's review that mentioned that they would custom-cut firewood. I have a very small wood-burning stove that requires wood no longer than 12 to 14 inches, and have found it difficult to get wood cut to that size. Maud Krulla was a pleasure to deal with. She delivered a cord of oak and hickory cut to 12-inch lengths---perfect for my stove. I was also happy to discover that the load also included smaller pieces that are perfect for kindling. I have stacked the wood myself, and it is indeed a full cord, if not more. The wood is a little slow to catch fire and smokes a bit as the fire is getting started, but it does burn well once it gets going, and then it burns for a long time. Although the cost was a bit more than I had hoped to have to pay, I think the quantity, quality, and custom-cut length were worth the extra cost.
Very disappointed in this experience, especially given the premium I paid... I will not use this provider again.
"Wood was delivered to customer after several days of rain and bitter cold. Blue Ridge Oak Farm guarantees the quantity which customer orders. Several attempts have been made by Blue Ridge Oak Farm to contact customer, but customer is unreachable."
Some of the wood is green and will need to sit for a year. In addition, I realized (again, only afterwards) that the quantity of wood delivered was a fair bit less than half a cord. My initial review of Blue Ridge Oak Farms reflected my disappointment in the price, quality, and quantity of the wood. Very much to her credit, Maud called the same day the review went up, first to apologize, and second to ask what she could do to make me happy. My initial review had explained how I'd bought some kiln-dried wood, and that it burned much better than her wood. She offered to bring me some kiln-dried wood. And she brought it less than 24 hours after the review went live. This time we measured the stack very carefully as we added wood, and stopped only after it was comfortably over 64 cubic feet.
So although it took two attempts, Maud did deliver a half cord of quality wood, some of it kiln-dried, some of it freshly split. I was initially unhappy, but she was extremely responsive to my complaints, and I would consider calling her again next year.
We have bought seasoned firewood from Maud for many years, and we have always been very pleased with it. Unlike some firewood sellers, Maud is scrupulously honest with regard to the amount of wood she delivers. (For example, a cord really is 128 cubic feet.) And if after she delivers it and one stacks it, it measures less than promised, Maud will make it good.
One can pay less for firewood from someone else. But whenever we have done so, we have been disappointed by the quality of the wood (e.g. it is green and does not burn well) and/or the vendor's attention to the quantity of wood actually delivered.
Not having a and quot;green thumband quot; at all, but desiring our yard to be a haven, Maud understood completely and made great, simple suggestions for plants, their colors and placed them with ease and confidence. She shaped the overgrown trees both in the front yard and the back creating lovely canopies everywhere, and planted things that will return in the spring and next season with little maintenance.
I love going out in our yard again, and am absolutely delighted with her work and would recommend her wholehearted to everyone! :)
