Poorly. I had a ceiling leak as a result of the damaged roof, so time was of the essence. The managers said they'd send employees to do the inspection on, I think, a following Tuesday, but it didn't happen until Friday. The estimate was staggeringly expensive: as I recall, they proposed to take up all the slates on one side of the house and put down some sort of storm-proofing material, to replace the flashing on the dormers, and to replace many slate tiles--on and on. The total was about $12,500. My insurance company subsequently looked at the damage and proposed paying $3,400. Meanwhile I didn't hear any further from Stevens Roofing; originally they'd said there was a six-week wait on their schedule, but they could do a temporary repair in the meantime to address my leaky ceiling. The weeks passed and finally I inquired (as you might have gathered by now, if you've read this far, roofers who can competently repair slate roofs are scarce in these parts): Stevens Roofing replied, a little reproachfully, that I'd yet to pay for the initial inspection ($250) hence their long silence. To make a long story short, I pointed out that they'd never sent me an actual bill for this, but when I receive bills I tend to pay them on the spot. They sent the bill, I promptly paid it, then hired a different roofer who performed the necessary repairs for $1,915.

Found an excellent remedy for a difficult project. That gutter had fallen 3 times, now I think it should be good as they diagnosed the problem and put in place better anchorage.

They stood behind their work, the source of the leak was hard to find and kept coming back till they fixed the leak. They are reputable and pleasant to deal with.

They were very punctual and initially they sent two persons out. They inspected the roof, looked at the chimney and the interior where the leak was coming in.   They determined that we needed piece to redirect the water. They set the appointment right away and were out in a couple of days. They only thing I would say was we signed up for an additional plan for roofing maintenance for removing pine cones and needle along with cleaning our gutters. I have not seen them yet.

They were courteous and prompt. They did the work when I wasn't here, but I could tell they had done it and cleaned up. they were very conscientious. I even signed up for their rook protection plan that means they will come out and inspect twice a year and it gives me a discount on roofing repairs.

I had 5 estimates for new roof, trim, gutters, etc... All of the estimates came in between 15k to 22k with the exception of Stevens. They gave me an estimate of 52k. Yes, 52 thousand dollars for doing the exact same work the other 4 companies were asked to do. Their reasoning was because they have their own employees and never sub out the work. For that kind of money you'd think they employ U.S. Senators to do the work.

We have used Stevens Roofing numerous times in the past twenty years, going back to when we lived in Norfolk.  Quality has always been excellent.  In the past they have been very responsive, even repaired hurricane damage when we had to leave town before the repairs were started.  Stevens has always been our go-to contractor for roofing repairs. This last time, however, communications with the company was poor.  After we paid a deposit for the repairs in early January, we had to call them several times to find out when they were coming to do the work.  Repairs weren't done until March.  Bad weather certainly played a large part in the delay, however the company did not keep us informed of what they were doing.  A simple phone call would have sufficed, and that would have been understandable.  But nothing until we called them. Quality of the work was outstanding; it always has been.  The on-site workers were excellent and very professional.  I admit I did not get a second estimate for any of the work completed by Stevens because I have always been willing to pay for the quality and responsiveness. However, I feel their prices are somewhat high.  On one job we never got a breakdown of the labor and material. This past job was fixed priced, which included some some growth of about 10 percent.  I would recommend Stevens if cost is not an issue and you just want to get quality work performed.  Hopefully, this last experience with communications was an anomaly. I now need to replace an attic fan, but because of Steven's prices and the recent communications issues, I am going to try someone else.

There were some minor communication issues at the beginning of the job as we were in Richmond when work began. Major issues were discovered by Stevens workmen when the original roof was removed. Management recommended a contractor who removed a sliding door and replaced it with a window. The third party contractor did a wonderful job, but the billing process was poor. They were expensive, but we felt we were treated fairly by both Stevens and the contractor. We were very pleased with the quality of all the work that was done. The roof work was $9,000. The contractor's work was in addition to that. Interestingly near the end of our project the contractor and Stevens merged their businesses, which I think will create and even better Stevens. Stevens will benefit from the contractor's expertise and the contractor will no longer have to bother with administration, which Stevens did well.

Fantastic.  Our historic home is old and the slate roof has many funny ridges and valleys, making it a very detail-oriented job.  In the beginning, they worked with us to make sure we understood what we were getting in to and why it needed to be done.  I already knew that it required major work because it was obvious that previous owners had no idea what they were doing and either "fixed" it with caulk or brushed-on roof tar.  There was some evidence of contractor work, but they must have hired the wrong company because many places didn't line up or had poor connections.  Stevens was very thorough in their inspection, so there were no expensive surprises mid-project.  It turned out that the best solution was a total replacement with reclaimed slates.  They kept us abreast of their schedule and when they would start work.  Our baby was due in early September, so they made sure to get the job done before then.  They even helped carry groceries in for my pregnant wife!  The jobsite was always cleaned up every day.  The crew chief would show me pictures on the days that I was able to come see what was going on (so I didn't have to climb up).  Any time they came in to the house they always wore shoe covers, which was nice.  The roof details were done correctly and with the proper materials, so I am confident that the roof is watertight.  While the cost did give some sticker shock I checked some national numbers of slate roof cost per square foot and it is very reasonable, especially with the fact that they did all of the paperwork.  They helped set up the financing, which was another concern of mine.  When there was a hiccup with some leaks during a pair of torrential storms mid-project, they had someone come out on a Sunday to check.  They touched up affected paint and repaired plaster that had been damaged at no additional cost.  The project manager that we dealt with, Danny, was always polite, professional, and well spoken.  Never tried to mislead us and was always able to explain why things were done the way they were.

I started working with Nick Price of Stevens Roofing in March when he came out to give me a bid for the work that needed to be done. He was prompt, courteous and professional. He informed me in March that they wouldn't be able to come out and do the work before June. I was fine with the timing because he was the only one that came out that knew what he was talking about when it came to the roof repair and had the experience to repair copper roofing. The work did begin in June as promised and would have been completed on time if it weren't for the vinyl louvers that had to be built to replaced the wooden ones. The louvers were manufactured by a third party and didn't fit when they arrived. This happened twice but we were able to resolved the issue. Jess and crew who came out and did the work were wonderful. They cleaned up every day and again were very polite and professional. Stevens Roofing is expensive but they know their craft and this was more important to me than the money. Get the job done right the first time! Detailed contract was drawn up that explained EVERYTHING.  Very pleased and would definitely use them again.

Initially, the contractor that showed up to do the work admitted he was told the wrong work to do.  So he had to go and pick up other parts.  When the job was done one of the stacks was very lose, so that entailed calling the company and having them send someone out to secure it.  That cost me two days of taking off work.  Then the same stack leaked in the next rain.  And from that point on I lost count of how many times SOMEone had to come out to try to fix it (at least six times) and how much time I had to take off work.  It continued to leak, so I called another company to fix it the right way and found out that at least the one boot was not properly seated or secured with nails, but only sealed with caulk.  The comment the second company contractor made was "fake the best and caulk the rest" or something to that effect.  He was surprised at the lack of quality of work that was done.  Steven's Roofing made me feel as if I was a second thought and not a paying customer because I wasn't getting a wole roof done.  The sad part about all of this was I located him on Angie's List and he was rated fairly high.  I just gave up.  How many times does it take someone to come out and slap on some more caulk before you finally realize it's just not done right?  I later found out from the second company I called that they would not have charged me nearly as much as Steven's did to do same work (which I understand is really easy for the second company to say in that situation).  That's life.  Hope this doesn't happen to someone else.  Perhaps this company is experiencing some problems and it's affecting how it services customers.  I try to give others the benefit of the doubt; however, after so many call backs to fix a leak, I gave up.

***"Since my initial review on Angie's List I'd like to add here that Steven's Roofing backs up their customer satisfaction guarantee. They read my review on Angie's List and quickly got back with me, to find out how they could make good on their promise for work done." Thank you Steven's Roofing.

We called Stevens Roofing because of a leak on the one story addition on the back of our 1920's era home. A trusted friend highly recommended them, with the note that they are expensive. A manager came immediately after my call and was honestly the most professional contractor I've ever worked with. He suggested a repair of the tar and gravel roof, explaining how it is difficult to judge the damage of leaks and saying that a repair may not be a 100% solution. The repair was quickly done. Fast forward a couple weeks, to the first major rain storm of the fall (Hampton Blvd flooded) - water was pouring in the addition from the original source and at least two more. I called, and they came back, this time with a bit slower response time. They suggested to replace the old roof with a rubber roof, and that's what we agreed on. The workers were professional - they clearly knew what they were talking about and were really experienced. And they were really kind. A neighbor happened to be having the same work done on a one story addition, and (after having them point it out to me) I could really see the differences in approaches and quality, with Stevens being superior. The roof has been excellent since. The company was willing to work with me a bit on the price since the original fix didn't work. They are very upfront with their costs, and it should be noted they are expensive. So it's up to you to decide between quality and cost, but I'll be going with them again.

We have had other people repair this three times and each time it was wrong. This company did it right, and they worked to fit us into their schedule which helps as we try to ready the house to sell for our mother. Excellent work and the people were focused

They are excellent and we simply go to them always for our slate roofing needs. We are restoring our 100 year old house and they are totally reliable. They use old slates instead of new (as well as copper nails) which is important for our house. We call them every year to do an inspection on our slate roof. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

It went very well. I located the company through Home Depot knowing that Home Depot isn't likely to want their name associated with a bad contractor. Considering the roof needs to last some 25 years, thats important. I'm willing to pay more for a good job. I see no signs of defects on on the roof singles or edges. The sealing around the chimney appears to be done well (many leaks occur on poorly installed chimney seals, I've heard). They had an exerienced senior installer inspect the work to ensure the workers do the job correctly. Some 3 years later, no leaks.
They cleaned up after themselves and did not leave stuff in the yard. They also used a magnet to remove any nails in the yard. They also did not damage the yard with equipment. Only complaint is the multiple vents installed on the roof. A squirrel chewed through one of them (d*** squirrels!). I suggest asking for a better material (metal?).
