Fine Interior Woodworks, William Anderson, is the BEST "AAAA".
EXPERIENCE IN EVALUATING CONTRACTORS: My experience in remodels is very extensive.
I?ve personally built a large guest house from the ground up doing every trade myself; I?ve sub-contracted out three large homes complete re-models; I?ve built a new home using a general contractor. All homes required very custom wood working; Very custom, so I knew we needed a real expert in fine carpentry, wood working for a very difficult, detailed job - custom designed, large, art studio storage book cabinet. William IS THE BEST I'VE EVER WORKED WITH.
JOB DONE: The condo in Ghent (Norfolk) is absolutely beautiful, a historical period home, where cabinetry had to match work done over century ago. The area of the cabinet to be set was extremely difficult to fit and match. I searched for days to find someone realy good. First: there are very, very few finish carpenters on Angie's List or BBB in Hampton Roads area. Second: most are very busy and pricey. Third: sort of "get the job done, in and out." William is tops in all the categories: (1) Time to estimate cost of project / visit the property very quick; (2) Price - very fair; (3) I have concerns or questions about the design - he gives wonderful suggestions and ideas; (4) The finish stain / paint - it is perfect; (5) Responsible / concienciousness - always there for you.
The only negative is he is very slow. Expected job to be done in about 10 days; it was more like 20 days. Who cares, his thoughtfulness and attention to detail and quality of work more than rewarded for his fine work.
SUMMARY:
Having done five houses total remodels in my life time: HE IS THE BEST.

Mr. Anderson answered the phone and made arrangements to come to our home for an estimate the same day. We had custom built cabinetry in another nook in our home, so it was easy to communicate to him what we were looking for on this project. He gave me an estimate on the spot. I told him that I had other contractors coming to give estimates and that I would let him know what we had decided by the end of the week. Mr. Anderson was available to start immediately, so we chose to hire him for the job. He was usually prompt and courteous. He was late one day; but, he called to let us know that he would be late. The cabinets look good. They are not the same quality as we have in another room, but we paid a lot less for them, so I can't complain. The cabinet doors need to be sanded--it seems he painted over them without first sanding. Before the job was completed my husband noticed that the bottom of the cabinet did not have the support it needed. He showed Mr. Anderson, who agreed. Mr. Anderson said it was an oversight on his part, and fixed the problem using wood and drill bits that my husband gave him. Without the support, anything heavy that we put in the bottom cabinet would have fallen through the bottom. The cabinets were rather large, and Mr. Anderson did not bring anyone to help him bring them up our narrow staircase. I was very pregnant, and unable to help; my husband was at work. He took out several chunks of drywall and scratched our paint up pretty bad. My husband explained to him that we had just had the stairwell professionally painted less than 1 week before. He said he would fix it, but then decided against it, and said that my husband could just do it. He claimed that since he helped take a baby gate down from the stairway, we owed him. He also gave my husband a $0.99 sponge brush to complete the job. This really irritated me. We don't have time to spackle and paint, which is why we hired it done. It was not our fault that he did not hire the appropriate help to get the cabinets up the steps without damaging the drywall. The cabinets installed in the other room were much larger, and the contractor did not mess up the stairway. That contractor also worked around the baby gate. I would not hire Mr. Anderson again.

When I need a job completed, I ask this contractor if he does this type of work. If he says he does, I ask him to give me an estimate on it first. Always get it in writing. Then, once I have the written estimate in hand, I ask him how long it will take him to do the job and when he can start. He usually lets me know and then I tell him to begin the job. For each project so far, it takes him about 3 to 7 days depending on the job. I pay him some upfront for materials and supplies ( I don't recommend this when dealing with people you don't know). But, he has never let me down when it comes to the job and getting it completed. He works in a professional and workmanlike manner-satisfaction guaranteed. And, yes-I will use him again most definitely.
