Our team at Abrams Realty want to extend a special thank you to the team at Air Specialty. They always are professional and polite when answering the phone. The staff is very educational and helpful. They’re very prompt with scheduling and are always customer oriented. Their technicians are wondering at following special instructions and requests, they’re amazing about calling ahead to advise their on their way, and it goes unspoken the phenomenal work they perform. I work with dozens of vendors in Hampton Roads and have to say that Air Specialty is our most preferred vendor for HVAC and we look to them for help with any and all of our properties HVAC concerns. I wanted to also give a special shout out to their after hours emergency team tonight who literally saved the day and helped make sure our closing went smoothly tomorrow morning. We can’t thank you enough!

I got three estimates on new HVAC for my home recently. At nearly $20,000, I was definitely scrutinizing every aspect of the project. Air Specialty was not only the lowest bidder, they were hands down the most professional. They used software to evaluate the cooling requirements, didn't try to oversell me on options or capacity, and laid out my choices very clearly. Installation was swift and the install crew was thorough, punctual, and left my home in a clean and orderly condition. Follow up has been good and I will maintain a service contract with them. Why take so long writing this? Just because some company slaps their logo on a van doesn't make them good. I actually received one estimate handwritten on notebook paper without ANY specific component identification or itemization. Air Specialty is the real deal.

Didn't go well at all. The install wasn't done properly. They didn't mount duct work to joists under house. It wasn't secured or sealed properly. The return line from the unit was not taped or zip tied properly. Other joints were not sealed properly with mastic or tape. The plenum box and some of the duct work was laying on the ground. When we called them back we were told they never would have done that and they took no responsibility for their install.
Response from Air Specialty Heating & Air Conditioning
"First, the system we installed had been in your home for 2 years when you reported it flooded with 15in of water. We responded immediately to your concerns. We crawled your crawl space, took pictures, and offered to pay for repairing a distribution box as well as two flexible lines. This is not our obligation but we felt it to be the proper thing to do during your time of need. Your families responsibility was only 2 things that no matter how we installed them, would have been damaged by the flood. Your house was inspected and approved by the city of Virginia Beach and i met personally with the inspector after the flood and the city felt we did everything we could to help you. When i spoke with your husband he told me he'd rather replace it himself. I'm sorry you fell that way Mrs [Member Name Removed]. We really tried to help as much as we could."

The whole process went smoothly and we are very satisfied with the result. The crews showed up on time as scheduled and cleaned up well at the end of each day. The new American Standard system and duct work is quieter and our experience so far shows that it is providing well balanced cooling in our home. We are confident the same will be true once the heating season starts.

The estimator came out within 2 days of my request and was very thorough and professional.  He told me a would get the estimate within 24 hours.  It took 5 days to get it and several emails and phone calls to get my email address correct.  After that I asked them to contact me on the next business day to answer several questions I still had - they did not so I signed a contract with another Angie's List "A Graded" company.  They actually offered the best equipment for the price but because of their delays I went with another company.

'B' is about right for this company. They were responsive and punctual on service call but the $80 service call fee apparently gets you nothing more than someone to show up at the door. They did troubleshooting of my unit but couldn't find a problem except for a flipped breaker. That lead to an additional $56 charge. Total for about one hour: $135. That might be the going rate in this area but just know that their advertised fee for a service call is not what it seems.

Response from Air Specialty Heating & Air Conditioning
"I was a direct part of this transaction four years ago and think clarification is in need. If you remember, Air Specialty was doing a favor for your tenant who worked at a local distibuter of heating and ac products. Your tenant purchased the equiptment (we normally would never do this) and we agreed to put it in. Air Specialty did not design or purchase this equipment and installed it using existing duct. We have since learned our lesson. Once the system was installed we made over 15 trips finding numerious issues including bad t-stat (not installed by AS), bad reversing values (2ea) which Air Specialty has no control over, and a bad defrost control board (also no control). AS recommended the manufacturer get involved but because we did not purchase the equipment it would be your tenants responsibility to arrange. This was never done. We try very hard to provide our customers the very best service and this transaction was no different. We asked you forward us the service tickets from the company that followed us. We never received them. Air Specialty has been in business for over 35 years and we will continue to provide the very best customer service as you can see by our other testimonials."

The technicians called ahead to confirm arrival time, and did arrive on time. They didn't attempt to gouge me, or try to install much more expensive duct work than I required, OR do more work than needed. They gave me great advice. I dealt with 5 different techs, and each one was very professional, friendly, informative, and helpful. I love these guys!

We called this company because our furnace smelled like something dead when we turned it on, and they had gotten good reviews on Angie's list.  A week later (their first available appointment), a young guy showed up, crawled under the house to look at the furnace, tinkered around some, turned up the thermostat until he got the dead smell, and announced that in order to figure out what it was he would have to pull the furnace out into the yard and take it apart, which would cost $1500.  He said that because it was 19 years old and had some rust, that if we were going to go to that expense we should buy a new unit instead.  Needless to say, we got a 2nd opinion.  We had someone come out from a different company.  This guy went under there, removed some of the housing (whereas the first guy told us he just looked in the vents), cleaned the evaporator coil (which he said looked like it hadn't been done in 19 years), looked around using a mirror, removed a dead rodent from the heat exchanger, sealed up the entry point, and sealed up our vents.  He also tested our air quality to make sure no carbon monoxide was leaking into the house.  All this for a fraction of what we were told it would cost.  Now when we turn on the furnace, no more smell.  Plus it doesn't short cycle any more now that the coil is clean.  The first guy claimed that even if we removed the dead thing, the smell would stay forever and get in our vents so a new unit was our most logical option.  Wrong.  They even made a follow-up call a week later to discuss finance options.  No thanks Air Specialty, I will take my business elsewhere from now on.
Response from Air Specialty Heating & Air Conditioning
"Sir, First and foremost we would like to apologize for the time it took us to get to your home. After a thorough follow-up of this technician's service tickets and contacting our customers we discovered that this technician had provided poor information for several places, yours included. Air Specialty strives to provide quality service at a fair price and hold customer opinions in a high regard. This service technician's employment with Air Specialty has been terminated because he did not meet our standards of customer service. We would like to thank your for your honest remarks and letting us know you had an issue with our service; we really do appreciate it. If you would like to consider using our services in the future we would like to extend you a free service call (valued at $69.95). We know that trust is important to the customer and we hope that this technicians failure to meet our standards has not ruined our relationship with you. Again, thank you for your honest evaluation. It’s great. They check my furnace twice a year. I have a contract with them; I’ve been using them for years. The technicians are always on time, are not messy, and give me a report on how my heating and a/c system is working. I’m happy with their services.
