The serviceman arrived on time and performed the service efficiently.
This is over a period of almost four years. It was our first winter in the house. when using the old furnace we noted an odor of burning oil and called for service. A technician performed winter maintenance, the odor was still present. Called for service again, the next tech found leakage between the chamber, danger of CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning. The furnace was replaced. On the next service visit, the tech informed us the furnace didn't have enough air flow and was shutting down during cycles due to over temp conditions and was a fire hazard. The ductwork needed redesigned, we decided to add the Heat pump and duct to the upper floor as part of the service. This is the 1 year mark.
After the installation was completed, in the spring, the AC worked fine. We had a few cool days and tried the heat. The heat pump ran 25 secs. and shut down due to a high pressure fault. On multiple occasions techs would remove refrigerant from the system to allow the heat to work, but causing the AC to flood the basement, at one point so badly it shorted out the systems blower motor causing its failure and a fire hazard. When called for AC service, refrigerant was added and the circle would start again(remove/add/remove/...). Other service was performed, exchange coils were replaced, refrigerant removed, system dried and cleaned, all to no improvement. This is the three year mark.
I sent a registered letter to the owner,Tim Kurstedt, outlining this to him. He called and met with me to survey the system. He concluded the return duct didn't have enough flow and should have been enlarged further down its length to reach other return grates. Also an atmospheric damper should have been placed in the flue. He had been on site before, multiple times during the service and installations. Changes were made, during the damper installation, a hole was punched in the flue piping by accident or starting to drill in the wrong place. Responsibility was denied but it was to be fixed, hasn't happened yet. After the changes there was almost no air flow to the upper floor, more service was required. The system seems to operate now. It has taken almost 4 YEARS. They don't return my phone calls currently, though there has been no arguments or confrontations of any type.
The owner is pleasant and seems sincere, but no amount of sincerity can overcome the incompetence we have dealt with for the duration of this ordeal. DO NOT DO ANY BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY.
His install team (led by Dave) showed up when expected and worked their tails off, all day, each day. The install went a couple days over schedule, due to the extensive nature of the ripout. The new system is super tight, with all joints sealed. They even sent a tech the following week to balance the system and check operation, and make adjustments as needed. I've seen two other installs, and never seen this best practice actually used by other vendors. Fantastic!
Looking forward to the follow up assessment. The goal was 10% leakage rate. The installers aimed for 2%.
Tim and Co were able to work with the payment structure dictated by a HUD 203K loan, to their credit.
All things considered, I will recommend A-1. They walk the talk of their motto and quot;Done right the 1st Time!and quot;. I've found that rare in SW Virginia. These guys are the real deal. As a project manager for DoD, I understand both due diligence and and quot; You get what you pay forand quot;. Price, Quality, and Time were right on point with my project. Customer Service (Service after the sale) is the icing on the cake!
