Description of Work
Mr. Cooke is prompt and professional, although he does prefer to be paid in cash. We had to have the carpet re-installed, due to a manufacturing defect, which the carpet store replaced at no charge to us. As always, a professional job. We have used Mr. Cooke before, for refinishing hardwood floors, and they came out beautifully.

The owner responded very quickly to our request for an estimate and showed many wonderful samples of his work. When we agreed to accept the offer, we attempted to pay by credit card and he was unable to accept our payment initially, but called to arrange payment through Paypal. The only stipulation was that we had to make payment in full before the job was completed. Since the company was a friend referal, we were confident that the job would be completed. They were able to schedule the job within a week and the work was completed in three days The crew arrived promptly. The first day they arrived about an hour early and entered the home when noone was there. Unforuntately, one of our children left the door unlocked when they left that morning. It was a little alarming when my mother arrived and they were already in the home. We live in a small home, so we were living at a relative's home for the week of refinishing. In-laws were in the front room of the house while work was completed during the day. When the job was completed and we saw it for the first time we realized that the stain in our hall (old floor) and kitchen (new floor) area were two different colors. I called to report this concern about 5:30 on a Friday evening and he returned my call later that night, in an effort to provide customer satifsfaction. During our initial meeting with the Mr. Cooke we chose a stain for red oak floors, from a panel of selections that he shared with us. In my follow-up call, Mr. Cooke stated that he noticed that the floor in the hallway was actually white oak during the first day of work. He made no attempt to contact us or find a stain that would more closely match the color on the red oak floor. When questioned about the difference, I was told that I couldn't ask him about this after the third day of poly and that he assumed I knew we had two different types of wood. In addition, several pieces of flooring were installed from our spare stock and the transition from the hall to our den was not and quot;filled inand quot; as we agreed upon during our initial discussion. Finally, a small gash was found in our new flooring in the kitchen. My husband installed the floor and it was covered with paper until the morning of the refinishing. Mr. Cooke shared that he did not notice it until the stain was put on, so it is difficult to say whether or not it was done during the sanding process, but no attempt was made to fill it before refinishing was completed. The stain on our new kitchen and den flooring looks beautiful and the company took great care around our new kitchen cabinets. Our greatest disappointment is with the lack of attention to detail in the transition from our den to the hallway.

If you have a flooring job you need done quickly, at a reasonable cost (this price was for both the hardwood floor refinishing and the carpet installation), with completely professional results, Pernell Cooke and Cooke Brothers Flooring is your "go to" team. We definitley will use them again for our flooring needs.
Description of Work
- While renovating our house in Norfolk, we discovered old-fashioned oak hardwood floors on almost the entire first floor, under the carpet we ripped out. Although the thin oak planks were in fairly good shape, there was paint primer overspray in some places, some drilled holes, some warped boards, and a few splintered edges. We asked Pernell to come in and look at it, and he quoted us an extremley reasonable price, for the amount of work we knew would be involved. He also wisely advised us to go with a darker stain than we had originally requested, and to use a matte polyurethane finish to hide any imperfections that might remain after he did the repair and replacement of some of the bad boards. - He completely sanded, repaired and replaced bad areas, stained, and applied the finish in only three days and the floors came out better than we could ever have imagined. We were absolutely delighted.- Because he did such a great job, we also used him to replace the carpeting on the stairs, and the upstairs hall and bedrooms. He advised us where to go pick out the carpeting, and was able to schedule the installation within a week. Even though he didn't perform any of the work himself this time, the installation man he sent was friendly, outgoing, and finished the work within just a few hours. We would have liked to have had the floor boards screwed down in a couple of places before the carpet was installed, as Pernell first indicated he could do. Since he wasn't able to do the carpet installation, this didn't get done. However, the sqeaks were improved greatly just by being covered in the carpet and pad.

The installers were very professional about how they went about their work. We did have a few disagreements about the job and how it should be done. We ironed all of that out and in the end, and the carpet was installed to our satisfaction. The job was good enough for us to hire them for installing our hardwood floors, so they must have done something right.
