Thompson's Tree Service & Stump Grinding

The day they (Kevin Thompson and his brother Bobby) came to give me an estimate, they seemed like they needed work and were ready to do the job right then, so we agreed on a price of $425 to take down the tree, grind the stump, trim the trees out front and haul everything away. They went right to work, first trimming the branches on the holly trees and then leaving with all the trimmed branches for the dump. When they came back they went out back to take down the dead tree. When I looked out the window to see there progress, I thought...:Oh, this isn't going to go well!" They were just sawing the tree at the bottom, no climbing up and topping it off (although I have to say, the top was missing any way, as a storm had brought that down already). They also did not attach any ropes to guide the tree as it fell. So, down it came...BOOM, right into our picnic table smashing it into smithereens! They blamed it on the wind and the fact that the tree was much lighter than they thought (it was a very dead tree) and said that they would replace out picnic table and do the stump grinding for free. I told them not to worry about the picnic table, as it was pretty old, but the free stump grinding sounded good. I asked about having them haul away a pile of dead branches in the backyard and he said he would do it if I gave him a cash tip. I payed them $350 by check and gave him $20 cash as a tip. They said they would come back in about a week to grind the stump and haul away the branches. About a week and a half later, they showed up unannounced at 8:30 on a Sat. morning, right as I was leaving to go somewhere. I felt bad about not paying them for grinding the stump, so I told him I would give him another $125 for the stump and for hauling off the branches out of the yard. (what can I say...I'm a sap!) I said since I was giving that, would he also trim a few bushes back and haul that debris off too ~ maybe ten minutes worth of work ~they were small and it would only be a little more debris to add to what he was already hauling away. He agreed, but again he asked for a cash tip, ~ all I had was $6, which I gave to him. I was in a hurry to leave, so I paid him and left. When I came home that day, all they had done was grind the stump. They had not hauled away any of the stuff we agreed to nor had they cleaned up the mess from the stump grinding. They did at least haul off the remains of my smashed picnic table LOL! But I never saw or heard from them again.
