Mike had great ideas - in our first meeting. Then after giving our down payment and making a second payment, he disappeared without a trace. We were out about $4500 and he’s not returned a call/text/email. We made the second payment because he said he had great plans for us and he kept rescheduling our appt until he went radio silent. We never record any work product.
Description of Work: We were doing an addition.

We engaged Mr. Nawrocki for a project that included adding a two-car garage with office and bathroom above as well as substantial interior renovations on two floors of our house. Mike is creative, providing great recommendations on design. However, during the design phase there were times when we couldn’t get in touch with Mike (one time for 3+ weeks). Then when we were ready to move into the permit phase, where Mike was going to generate plans for the county and our builder, he disappeared. After spending more than 9 months working with Mike, we were left having to start over with another architect. After going to small claims court, we recovered our down payment but none of the money we spent working towards getting actionable plans we could use. So now we’re delayed in starting construction, out all of the money we paid to Mike and need to find a new architect. Obviously, I strongly recommend against working with Mike. There’s no telling if he’ll just leave the project when he feels like it, and you’ll be out all of the time and money you’ve spent working with him.

Mr Nawrocki did my plans for a master bed and bath. It was a wonderful experience! I had a lot of ideas and information and I had even done some early purchases. He took my ideas and incorporated them in the plans and brought in additional ideas which exceeded my expectations. The final results were outstanding.

We had already tried two other architects who did not understand our vision for the project. Mr. Nawrocki had several meetings with our staff and was open to meeting with the families from our school to address their concerns. He took the states guidelines, our teachers' wish list and the overall vision of our owner/director and was able to create an amazing addition that is open and bright. The addition is everything we could ever dream of and looks like it has been here from the beginning. Mr. Nawrocki and his office were always eager to help and resolve any of our concerns.

Description of Work: When my wife and I decided stay in Northern Virginia after our recent retirement, we also decided to remodel our house. Soon we were in the market for an architect for the first time. After several interviews, we chose Nawrocki Architects in McLean, Virginia. Firm Principal Michael Nawrocki impressed me in the first minutes of our first meeting. I learned (1) he is committed to the proposition that all people should have access to affordable professional architectural services – not just the big developers; (2) he respects the environment and employs green design practices, and (3) he is flexible in his approach to each project and in his compensation practices. Mike’s creativity coupled with attention to our budget allowed us to accomplish so much more than we had initially expected. We are two years ahead of where we thought we would be. Nawrocki Architects developed a deep understanding of our needs, our style and situation. Mike and his staff suggested concrete options and practices that gave our own early plans a great start. It was exciting. By choosing Nawrocki Architects, I got exactly what I wanted in residential architectural services. When it came to design, I wanted talent, creativity and innovation. But when it came to budget, materials and methods, I needed a seasoned and mature counselor who could provide measured advice and perspective. Mike has a very engaging style, listens acutely and designs directly around the clients’ needs. I am confident that I got both the best result and best bang for the buck. When we later hired a builder, we chose to keep Nawrocki Architects on board in an advisory role. This owner-designer-builder team fostered a genuine alliance based on mutual trust and respect. We clarified roles and managed expectations. I personally savored the climate of comfortable communication and confidence. Nawrocki Architects is a catalytic business. It is adept at improving and accelerating through the challenge of the remodeling experience. Mike Nawrocki devises the best plan to turn good ideas into great ideas, and then into great results.

They did some very nice designs, but Nawrocki really did not seem to grasp the essence of what we were looking for. They did quite a few detailed options, but did not make sure this was the direction we wanted to go. In the end it cost us more money for drawings that did not capture the essence we wanted and it was very frustrating. I felt like the drawings were done just to bring in money, not help with decisions. We decided to go with an architect that understood we were not looking for such a and quot;grandand quot; addition. The new architect also provided some basic drawings without all the needless detail you need when just trying to determine a layout of a bedroom suite. It was a costly mistake to learn this was not the architect for our house/needs. Also, while visiting our house to discuss options for the bedroom and an overall revamp of the house, for which they were paid, there were questions the architect could easily have answered had they simply climbed into the attick to answer, but did not. These architects would be better suited for million dollar homes, not the average home owner.

I liked him but he wasn’t incredibly responsive. Initially he was fine but after I asked him questions, he took awhile to get back to me. Rather than looking at a piece of work and telling you what they’d charge, you give them a budget and they tell you what they can do within that budget. He give me a quote for a small piece of work and I thought it was high. I haven’t done a lot of research on how much this would cost but the price made me think I should keep looking.

Mr. Nawrocki came to our house to see it and discuss the full scope of the project. He was very insightful and we very much liked the designs he presented in his portfolio. The most striking aspect of his approach is his flexibility, exhibited primarily in his willingness to charge incrementally by the hour. This allows the client to essentially lower architectural fees by researching finishes, fixtures, etc. and keeping him from having to charge for that work. He was very interested in projects of any size and clearly wanted to work on our project even though it might be considered small-ish. In the end, we decided to hire another firm, but he was our strong number 2 choice, and it was a hard decision. I would absolutely recommend that you talk with Michael if you are interested in good, flexible, creative design.
Description of Work: My wife and I conducted interviews with several architects to help design and implement a small expansion/remodel of our 2-story home.
