It was an ideal experience. They were straightforward about the work, very quick to diagnose and to let me know what was wrong and how much it would cost to fix it, and very cautious and transparent about what they were doing. I feel that Auto Tech could have taken advantage of me by identifying and doing work that really didn't need to be done; I gave them plenty of opportunity. They inspire confidence by proceeding cautiously, explaining exactly what's wrong and what they propose to do, and by counseling against resolving issues if it's not clear what the problem is, or whether it really is a problem. I was very impressed, and will be using them again.
Description of Work: Auto Tech did a service, changed oil, investigated and repaired issues associated with dashboard warning ligts, including low oil, service engine and low fluids lights.

They only do what is necessary. They tell everything and they tell you what work needs to be done. When you leave your vehicle for servicing if they find something they will call you and let you know but they will not force you for anything.

i had an appt for an oil change later in the week but that weekend my car was having trouble starting, so i drove straight there on monday morning (i was afraid my car wouldn't start again). they took me right away, diagnosed a bad battery, changed it out and i was on my way within 45 minutes. they explained everything to me in terms i could understand and did the work right in front of me, reinforcing my trust in them.
Description of Work: diagnosed a bad battery then changed out bad one for a new one.

Experience with Autotech was overall very good. They were a bit booked so I had to wait a day and a half for them to get me in and diagnose the problem. Within an about an hour of starting on the vehicle they had a "correct" diagnosis. Where others had failed before, they were able to explain why the car was overheating and where the coolant was going--head gasket was leaking and it was being pulled into the engine and burned off, which is why I never saw any dripping. Unfortunately the engine was somewhat damaged. AutoTech was very honest with me about the problem and (impressively) about their ability to fix it. Instead of trying to do it themselves (and make a lot of money in the process), they honestly admitted that they did not specialize in this type of work and instead recommended a reputable engine repair/replacement specialist (Dr.Motorworkz in Sterling) that I would never have found on my own. I was on travel and they allowed me to pay over the phone and helped coordinate transferring the car to the other garage so work could continue while I was away!! Their only charge was $60 for the diagnosis (much less than the $100 other places charge). Overall very pleased with their honesty and professionalism. I have some other work that needs to be done on my cars and will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I had a intermittent problem with my engine mysteriously losing coolant and overheating that had persisted for several years. What was strange was that I never found radiator fluid on the ground (at home or in the work parking lot), the reservoir would just suddenly be empty. I had taken it in to other shops and had it checked out and "fixed" (so I thought) on several occasions. After replacing the radiator last year and having it fully serviced at the dealership the problem cropped up again this spring. Based on the recommendations on the List I took my car here to see if they could figure out what the dealer and other garages were unable to.

They are a small, family owned operation. We think the best of them! They are exceedingly honest and straightforward. They always tell you what they're going to do and don't try to oversell you. I have had work done by dealers and this shop is much more honest. I have never had any problems with the work they've done. They have gone out of their way to do things and find parts that might be hard to come by.

AFTER NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH MONRO MUFFLER/BRAKE, I WENT TO AUTO TECH FOR A REALITY CHECK. MONRO REPLACED MY BRAKES 2 1/2 YEARS AGO AND I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS AND EXTRA CHARGES/SERVICE SINCE. MONRO RECENTLY TOLD ME MY 6 MONTH OLD ROTORS WERE BEYOND MACHINING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME WITH HEAVY DUTY ROTORS BECAUSE MY DRIVING WEARS OUT ROTORS QUITE QUICKLY APPARENTLY. I WENT TO AUTO TECH TO START FRESH WITH NEW BRAKES, BUT THE TECHNICIAN TOOK A LOOK AND SAID I DIDN'T NEED NEW BRAKES; THAT MINE WERE LIKE NEW. HE EVEN TOOK ME BACK TO MY CAR AND SHOWED ME WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. AFTER PAYING A SMALL FEE FOR THE TECHNICIAN'S INSPECTION TIME, I LEFT WITH PEACE OF MIND (AND PERFECTLY SOUND BRAKES). ALSO, I HAD AN EARLY APPOINTMENT AND WAITED FOR MY CAR. AS SOON AS I WALKED IN THE DOOR, THE TECHNICIAN TOOK MY CAR. I WAS DONE IN LESS THAN AN HOUR.
Description of Work: I WENT IN TO GET MY BRAKES REPLACED (ANOTHER AUTO SERVICE COMPANY TOLD ME MY ROTORS WERE UNSAFE AND BEYOND MACHINING), BUT THE TECHNICIAN AT AUTO TECH INSPECTED THEM, DROVE MY CAR, AND THEN SHOWED ME MY PERFECTLY SOUND, PRACTICALLY BRAND NEW ROTORS.

I spoke with Ralph Jr. who scheduled an appointment for a few days after we spoke. I dropped the car off on Monday morning around 10AM. Around 11AM, Ralph Jr. called me with a description of the work to be done - replace the rotors and brake pads. About 2PM, Ralph called again to say that the car was ready to be picked up. He explained that the rotors were able to be resurfaced rather than replaced. They had noticed that the light in the clock needed to be replaced and it was taken care of. The car runs much better now. I couldn't be more pleased with the entire experience.
Description of Work: I had the front brake pads replaced and the rotors resurfaced. Addiitionally, the light for the car clock was replaced.

We dropped it off the night before and that worked out really well. The car was ready the next evening as promised. They contacted my husband and told him the cost. We were very pleased. We had been going to another company and we began to feel as though we were being ripped off. We have been here twice and we are very happy.

Unfortunately, I had deferred service on my vehicle for too long so I wasn't expecting to come out of their inspection without some sort of issues. Moreover, I had done my due diligence and received other estimates and knew certain items needed to be performed before I was left stranded on the side of the road and started hitchhiking to work...or even worse, using this mode of transportation called the "Metro" where people pay exorbitant prices to be packed like sardines and deal with late trains and broken escalators. But, I digress. Nonetheless, Autotech of Tysons was very upfront and knowledgeable. They clearly let me know what needed to be done and why(as well as what didn't need to be done even though another service center tried to tack it onto their estimate). They were prompt, courteous, efficient, and enthusiastic. At one point the service rep even said that it was "fun to get into my car". Not exactly the word that I would use for my money pit of a vehicle, but hey, I like the enthusiasm. They had my car done the same day which is unheard of considering the amount of business they have. I am glad I have found this hidden gem. I intend to continue using them for future service visits.
Description of Work: Provided 110,000 mile service which required a tune-up, new spark plugs, crank pulley, valve cover gasket, steering belt, oil change, and tire rotation.

We have been using this place since April of 2004. We have found them to be very reliable and dependable. They seem to be able to tell you what is really going on and their estimates seem to be pretty right on. If there is some sort of other option to do a repair, they will inform you of that if it is cheaper.

I live in Ashburn and had been going to a local service center for years until they became what I considered unethical. I checked Angie's List and found Auto Tech of Tyson with really great reviews. I called and spoke with a service technician and was told that I would need to speak with Ralph Jr., who was out at lunch but would call me back. Sure enough, Ralph Jr. returned my call soon after lunch and I described what I considered to be the problem with our vehicle's automated antenna. Ralph Jr. agreed with the diagnosis and was able to give me an immediate quote on parts and labor which were over $70.00 less than my previous auto service location. I scheduled an appt. and when I checked the vehicle in, he had the part already on hand. Ralph Sr. even took a quick look to confirm what we thought the problem to be and said the vehicle would be repaired within 3 hours. Sure enough, the vehicle was repaired and ready for pick-up within the promised time frame. What I really like about Auto Tech of Tysons is that it's a small, personally-owned business where the owner and son are professional, courteous and honest. I will come back for all my future service needs and repairs outside of an oil change. I can tell you that the other place wanted to charge $100.00 to diagnosis the obvious problem and that's when I knew they were being crooks and were then $200.00 more to do the same repair.

Very good. The sensor failing was an intermittent problem so I had to make a second trip but that was due to the sensor and not the technician. I had asked them to check one of the tires for a slow leak and when they rotated the tires, they found a nail in the tire, repaired the leak and did not charge me for repairing the leak.
Description of Work: I took my car in for a 60,000 mile check and a "service engine soon" light that was on. When they took the car for a test drive, the "service engine soon" light went out so they changed the oil and performed the 60,000 mile check and replace a passenger side door lock actuator. They told me if light comes back on, to call back because the sensor may be failing. Needless to say, the light returned the next day. I took the car in the next week and they replaced the sensor.

Great. Told us the transmission was failing, but suggested we contact Honda America because they had seen a number of Odyssey transmissions fail, and sometimes the manufacturer took care of all or part of the repair cost. I took their advice, negotiated with Honda America, and saved $3,000 - paid $900 for a $3,900 repair.

It went superbly. I took the car to Auto Tech to receive a second opinion. The dealership told me I needed to have work done on the power steering fluid hose, a broken spring, AND a new sway bar. The total repair cost was to be $1700.00. Auto Tech found there was no reason to repair the sway bar, but did the rest of the work and I will never go back to the dealer. Auto Tech is now our car repair choice.

It was a great experience. They gave me an initial diagnosis cost over the phone and then on the day of the appt, they called during the day once they identified the issue to see if I wanted to replace the part. Ralph could have told me I HAD to replace the part immediately, but instead gave me an honest opinion that it wasn't urgent to do so immediately, but also wouldn't pass inspection in the future as long as that engine light was on. Additionally, I was happy with the thoroughness of the work (as mentioned above, I had no expectation that they would do routine maintenance check of the car). The check led to a suggestion to rotating tires to fix an alignment problem and which worked. So, not only was the price exactly what they stated and the check engine issue fixed (oxygen sensor), but they also did the alignment at no extra charge. Great communication and completed same day. I will definitely be taking our cars there going forward. Thanks, Ralph and crew!
Description of Work: They diagnosed and repaired the issue that caused my "check engine" light to go on. Additionally, they did a basic check of the car that was included in the price, but above my expectations, that led to identifying two other issues: 1) the air filter in my car was not properly installed by whomever serviced the car previously (dealership); and 2) the car was pulling to the left and Ralph suggested that simply rotating the tires may solve the problem at no extra charge.
