We hired Wedge Construction on the recommendation of a neighbor, and we are glad that we did! Now it is our turn to recommend them highly.
Tony Benita was a pleasure to work with as was all his crew. Everyone we came in contact with at Wedge went out of their way to please. We found Tony to be ethical, knowledgeable, and responsive. Furthermore, their pricing was extremely competitive. The work was high quality, and done on time. We would hire them again, and I'm sure we will. You can reach Tony at 703-926-1612.
At that time, June 2013, the contractor came to inspect where water was leaking and applied a tar patch (on the rubber membrane) without acknowledging the original faulty construction or creating a drainage solution.
In additon to applying tar patch another solution was to drill 20 11/2and quot; in holes in the front of the 3rd floor fascia board for water to drain out. Not only unappealing in appearance but 1- did not work since deck had no pitch, 2- damaged the rubber membrane at the deck perimeter allowing leakage below even worse than before, and 3- holes were large enough to allow access by birds.
As a former roofer myself, I was unsettled about this initial repair and concerned about continued leakage to covered 2nd and 1st floor porches. I hired an independent contractor who discovered the design flaws and repitched the entire 3rd floor deck (away from the house), flashed up the house, installed a gutter to collect water at front edge of deck and prevent drip down to 2nd and 3rd floors which was damaging the stained ceilings. This definitively corrected the problem.
Although courteous and professional, there are significant concerns about this providers' understanding in construction of a pitched open air deck and interface with the house. There was no pitch. Water accumulated and drained towards the house and continually leaked inside until it was recognized after a major storm. The initial remediation was severely inadequate and would have resulted in subsequent damage in the future. They were likely biased by the general contractor who never acknowledged there was a problem from the outset; tended to blame all of his subcontractors for problems and was always looking for the and quot;quick fixand quot;. Hopefully this will help others when they are looking for reliable contractors who instead of becoming defensive when problems occur, they will consider that sometimes and quot;the customer is rightand quot;.
When they had to wait for siding to come in, the day they were going to install it rained. they came on Saturday and finished job.
We made several changes as the job was going and Tony and his workers were very amiable and made all of the changes, They offered some new ideas and we incorporated them.
We are very pleased.
Wedge did a major renovation for us in 2009 for more than $300k and demonstrated their capabilities.
The work on the basement and the interaction was
so great that we engaged them for the bigger project on the main level
of the house. The crew was always considerate of both our kids and dog
while working in our main living space. Again, they impressed me with
being on time, working quickly and cleaning up every day. The attention
to detail is excellent.
We are very happy with our finished work and would happily recommend Wedge Construction.
Ben Benita in particular is a pleasure to work with and added great value to the overall project.
The hall bathroom began immediately after the completion of the master. It included the installation of a beautiful walk-in shower where the tub had been. The mosaic tile was a bit tricky to work with because it tended to move around a lot when applying it to the back shower wall. The foreman on the job figured out a way to pre-attach it to wallboard and then attach the wallboard to the shower wall so that the tiny mosaic pieces were in perfect alignment. It was that attention to detail that I saw time and time again in the construction of both bathrooms. It wasn't unusual for the foreman on my job to take instruction manuals home to study before arriving the next day ready to install something he'd never done before. As a result, it was always done perfectly. If he ran into a snag, he would spend the necessary time contemplating a solution and fixing the problem to my satisfaction. As in the master bath, the tile, plumbing, electrical -- everything -- was done perfectly.
Working with Tony and especially his foreman and workmen (who were at my house day in and day out for many weeks) was really great. They were courteous, respectful of our home, dependable, hard working and a real joy to have around. Of course the disruption of having the master bathroom unavailable was a little inconvenient, but while the work was going on, it was as good as it could get.
I would definitely hire Wedge Construction again for my next home improvement project and we highly recommend them to anyone looking to have a renovation done and done right.
The work was completed in a timely manner, and the overall appearance was acceptable. The cleanup was subpar. I had to go pick up nails that were left lying on the floor of the porch and deck, and in the yard near the porch. The crew left some of their trash from lunch lying around the porch and yard.
The first big rain storm we had after the porch was finished, the roof leaked. They did come out to fix it, but their repair was to cover over it with more shingles - which didn't even match the shingles that were already there. The original shingles were grey and the new shingles were black. When I went to clean the gutters in the fall, I discovered the gutter on the porch was full of water because they had sloped the gutter in the wrong direction, away from the downspout.
I just joined Angie's list, so this review is a couple of years after the work was originally done. Since been signs of the roof leaking in another spot after we had some big rains, so it appears the guy that did the roof had no clue as to what he was doing. We have really enjoyed having the screened porch, but I'm going to have to hire a roofer to fix it and do it right, which is a big disappointment.
There were some problems during the work. Disputes with the HVAC contractor resulted in Wedge's people completing the work. We have never had good air/heat in the new section. Plumbing and electrical were good although in some cases, materials used were minimum to meet code. For example, we ran TV cable throughout the house with a central entry point in the basement. We have since found that the cable is basic grade--not what Cox recommends--and is subject to interference. Had I been offered a choice, I would probably have opted to spend more for the higher quality. The point is, I was not offered a choice. Wall switches were sometimes placed in odd places. Again, a simple, and quot;where should this switch be?and quot;, would have made a huge difference. One lesson learned: you really need to be fully involved to catch bad decisions before they are made. There were many like this. Perhaps the most egregious: the air handling unit for the closet was mounted in a 5'x10' closet. I caught that after the unit had been mounted and they did correct the situation.
Really nice things: the kitchen is huge and gorgeous. The family room and living room were opened up by taking out support posts and reinforcing the structure of the home with beams in the ceiling giving the space an openness it lacked. A wall of windows transformed the master bedroom into a beautiful space overlooking the woods. The shower is stone and granite with multiple shower heads, steamer, music via internet, and a computer that drives it all. Floor to ceiling DVD cabinets were custom built to my specifications and are beautiful. A fifth bedroom was added in the basement space including a closet and egress window.
