Experienced, polite, tidy, professional, punctual. Yes, I'd recommend him.
Mr. Beckwith was one of two highly recommended plumbers suggested by a local plumbing supply company. When I called - around dinner time - he took his time to talk to me right then. He was willing to come out the next morning, but I explained that I would rather wait an extra day and meet Friday afternoon to accommodate my work schedule. (My office has a shower that I was able to use.) He agreed to come about 2:30 p.m. Friday to install the new water heater, which I was having delivered the next day, on Thursday. Mr. Beckwith also asked if I could make sure to get an expansion tank, which he said should cost me about $35 if I had the supply company add it onto my order.
On Friday, Mr. Beckwith's wife called to tell me he was running a little late because he had an emergency in Arlington. I live in Centreville and am familiar with the traffic from that direction so I knew about what to expect as far as his arrival time. She updated me again before he got to the house, which was appreciated. There is really no getting around traffic in DC Metro. When he arrived, Mr. Beckwith was ready to get right to work. Unfortunately, the tank that I thought was empty was completely full. It took a lot more time and effort having to disconnect and drain the old water tank, but he didn't charge me extra. Instead, he gave me a quick lesson on how to tell when a water tank is empty. He replaced a cut-off switch and moved the water lines a bit for me, which I asked him to do. He was able to do everything I asked and then some. He explained that the expansion tank he wanted me to get was to help save my pipes when the pressure in the water tank rises and pushes some of the hot water into the piping system. Water pressure has increased in my neighborhood since the house was built. Apparently people know that because someone else told me the same thing just a couple of weeks ago, but I had no clue until Mr. Beckwith told me.
The whole job, which included removing the old water heater, took about 3 hours start to finish. At the end, he still only charged me the original estimate. He explained that it would have cost more if I had bought a water heater through him, but it was within range of the other estimates I had received. I don't know if the other plumbers would have done as thorough a job, though.
My home inspector came by a couple of weeks later for a separate issue and commented it was the first time he has seen an expansion tank installed correctly in any of the houses he has inspected.
