Merrifield Garden Center - Gainesville Location

It went great! This is the 5th time I've worked with Andy — he's the best! VERY knowledgeable, very friendly, very helpful. I give Andy an A+! The reason I can't give Merrifield Gardens an A is because their prices are pretty outrageous both for the cost of the trees and for installation of them, an add'l 65%. I keep going back because Andy is so great to work with and their selection of trees is better than most.

Excellent products, excellent advice and diagnosis of plant problems. Refund for some plants which were not successful.

The staff in Gainesville are always more than happy to help choose just the right plants and to assure that we have chosen the mulch that we had used in previous years. They are a little higher priced then other centers around, but the plant quality is usually better, and you can't beat the expertise. The only recommendation I have for the store is that the staff are more available, because until you actually find somebody it is a little tough to get assistance, especially in the greenhouse. But I have to repeat, once you do have somebody, the interaction is professional, knowledgeable, and courteous

Nice ideas, but they never returned my call when I wanted to move ahead with the job, so we went with "the other guy." So, I would hire them again, but they need to return calls more promptly or will again lose another job..."the other guy" just did another $6000 job for us, and we were very pleased.

..They have a landscape designer. I went and picked out the tree. Stewart was very professional. If I have anything else that drops dead on me, I will have them replace it. I was very pleased with the results, the tree is growing like gang busters. It looks good, it looks very healthy. They were able to put the tree in over these big roots from the old tree. They guarantee their stuff for complete replacement for six months and give you half price if the tree fails in a year. They have a pretty good replacement policy. The tree was $400 and they also moved some stuff around in my garden. They were very responsive, Stewart came out when he was suppose to, he was very prompt. He made suggestions and we made an agreement, then they came back and did the work. The quality of their stuff is just so good. When you go into their enormous store there are professionals there that can talk to you. They have Christmas workshops. If your a gardener its a great place to go. I go there because I like it so much, the atmosphere is just fun.

It's a huge place and their plants are luscious, it's fabulous. It's a beautiful place. They even have a little cafe. If you're a gardener, it's worth the trip to see this enormous center, it's huge. They have events, they offer training classes, they have a ladies night out. It's acres, it's just enormous. They provide professional gardening advice for free. If you have a problem you can go there and talk to someone who knows what their talking about. Their prices are higher than like Home Depot, but their quality is so good.

Great plants and helpful friendly sales people.

As we were looking to order our firewood mid-winter, we did not have a lot of options.  Most places we called did not have any seasoned firewood.  Merrifield did and they delivered and stacked. The wood was seasoned, but to me it seemed to  not be completely seasoned.That being said, the wood is good wood, burns well and makes a nice hot fire.  All in all, we were happy with what we received. They were prompt and came when they said. The guy that delivered and stacked the wood was professional.

Two techs came out and prepared the ground, dug the holes, and planted the tree and bushes. The price included all soils, mulch and planting services, plus a 1 year warranty. Every question I had was answered and the guys knew what they were doing. They were professional and very nice. I really appreciated their hard work. I most definitely, and already have, returned to Merrifield for more plants.

I needed to have two trees removed and two new trees planted. I should note that the approximate cost of service I listed above includes the price of the two trees I bought also. It was $325 to remove the two old trees and about 60% of the price paid for the new trees to have them delivered and installed. I went to look at their selection and got help from a salesperson. They helped me select two great trees that were the best in their selection. The salesperson was very helpful and knowledgeable.I showed them pictures of the trees I needed removed and they quoted me a price on the spot. $325 to remove the old trees. The next closest estimate I received was $500 to remove just one.
These guys were just nice people.
I got to the check-out area where you schedule the services and pay and the experience was a little different. The person setting my appointment and services up in the computer really didn't know what she was doing and the supervisor who came over to help her acted like she couldn't be bothered with this. During this encounter the supervisor took a confrontational tone with us as if we were just lucky that she was taking the time to take our money. In all the check-out process took about thirty minutes and made us feel like we were a burden to them.
I called them before they came out to do the work after Miss Utility marked my yard. As it turned out there was a gas line right where I wanted one of the trees to go. So I called to ask them how close to the pipe the tree could be planted. You would think I had asked for their social security number. The person on the phone didn't even seem to listen to my question. I had to repeat myself three times before the person actually seemed to understand what I was asking. Then I was left on hold for 10 minutes while they found someone that could give me an answer. Once again, these were the counter people at the front that check you out, and they treated me like I was the biggest inconvenience and that I just wasn't worth their time. Terrible, terrible people to deal with. If I don't return to this business again, it will be because of the attitude of their front counter people.
When it came time for the work to be completed, the guys doing the job called ahead and showed up on time. Alex and Julio were the guys that came out to do the work. They were great. Very friendly and perfectly bi-lingual. There was no language barrier at all. They were clear, articulate and easy to understand. They listened to what I had to say and performed the work perfectly.When they were done you couldn't even tell there used to be trees there where they were removed. They worked fast and from what I could tell they did excellent work. They cleaned up everything great and I didn't have anything to worry about.
My only complaint, and I think you would get this anytime you remove a large tree and it's stump from your yard, is that the soil used to back-fill the hole from the big tree wasn't compacted enough. I heard them and saw them compacting the material the best they could, but it really wasn't enough. What they needed to do was to thoroughly soak the ground and continually pound more material into the hole. At least that's how I would have done it. I don't suspect any other contractor would go through that much trouble, but now that it's rained heavily for a few days the ground is a little soft there.
In the end I would use them again because of their friendly and knowledgeable sales staff and because the crew that did the work (Alex and Julio) were so incredibly awesome. I will say that if I based my decision on the attitudes of the people at the check-out station that I wouldn't ever go back there again.

We have been shopping at this Merrifield location for a number of years and yes while expensive their customer service and products are bar none the highest of quality you will find in the area. Our landscaper exclusively picks up our flowers and plants from here yearly and we are never disappointed.
I wanted to write this review to tell other members that you get what you pay for. We had a miscommunication with our landscaper and Merrifield staff in regards to our flower selection. Long story short just as the center was closing and quot;Roband quot; the manager rectified our situation to our utmost satisfaction. The knowledge this center provides to homeowners is wonderful, and something you won't get in big box stores. After last night's debacle they instilled further trust in me that this establishment operates with full integrity and I will continue to be a happy Merrifield customer.

It was fine. It wasn't very cheap but it was fine. I believe they gave him a little more than he asked for and that was fine. He went off and found some at a much cheaper price. You want to go to a garden center and buy firewood, that's one thing or if you want to buy firewood to a guy who sells firewood along the roadside then often times get a better deal.

Easy transaction and helpful staff to load the wood. It's not the cheapest cord of wood, but the sizes were consistent (16and quot; or less) and it was kiln-dried, so truly ready to burn right away.

It went very, very well. Design was excellent. They had one of the hardest working crews. Entire work was finished in one day.

Last week (and only because my HOA sent out notice that folks needed to take their holiday decorations down), I finally disposed of the fresh greenery wreath I had made before Thanksgiving. It hadn't faded much at all, despite its having been outdoors during our first polar vortex of the season. I imagine if I'd removed the bow from the wreath, stuck some Valentine hearts on it, it might even have survived through that holiday -- something I might be trying next year.
Next season, I'll also be ordering a second wreath from Merrilfield Gardens for indoors. This year, I ordered a more expensive wreath from a catalog for inside. It didn't arrive looking as good as the wreath I got locally, and it started falling apart right after Thanksgiving.

We made an effortless appointment to have a landscape designer visit our home and provide us with landscape ideas and cost.

The designer was prompt professional and very knowledgeable and provided us with a good design and ideas. Unfortunately, we were not in a position to avail ourselves of their service at this time. We will probably do a lot of the work ourselves, especially the tear out and removal of shrubbery and a small tree.

Based on several past landscaping designs we have implemented at other homes and at other times, we believe their cost was high, but that may be said of Northern Virginia in general (we are from a rural area of Virginia, further south).

We have not yet visited their nursery, but know we will, once we get finished with the major remodeling we are doing to our newly acquired home. The other reviews we have read, lead us to believe that their nursery stock is superior.

Great place to walk around and enjoy. Loads of variety
