Sundecks of Richmond is a locally owned, licensed operator serving the Metro Richmond area since 1985. We almost exclusively focus on additions, screened porches, garages and decks allowing homeowners to better enjoy their existing homes and increase home values. Our niche lies in providing an outstanding project for a fair price. Sundecks offers comprehensive design consulting services ranging from developing plans, filing building permits and all facets of construction. ADDITIONS: For the price of a pre-fab addition, Sundecks can build you a custom addition that matches your home from the brick to the roofing that is heated and air-conditioned, allowing our customers to enjoy their new space year round. Many additions can be completed from start to finish within 60 days, screened porches within a week, decks range from a day to a week depending on size and complexity, garages can generally be completed within 30 days. SCREENED PORCHES: Screened porches are very popular in the south, Richmond being no exception. A screened porch allows you to create an aditional living space in your home for less than half the price of an addition. Screened porches can be used for almost 10 months of the year in the Richmond area. Sundecks can build a wide variety of screened porches ranging from pressure-treated framing with tongue-in-groove ceilings, to the most popular ones which are made of all-vinyl, maintenance-free material with composite decking. GARAGES: Whether its attached or detached, single car to multicar, one level or two (with office/living space above), Sundecks has built them all. Our photo gallery shows you a wide array of our past projects giving you an insight into our experience. DECKS Having built over a thousand custom decks, Sundecks can design and build a deck to fit your needs regardless of style or size. Composite decks have become increasingly popular over the last few years, though more expensive, due to their low maintenance feature. Sundecks has built a variety of composite decks in recent years for our clients in the Metro Richmond area. * Home * Services * Gallery * Contact Us * FAQ * About Us

I had quotes from 4 other companies obtained from Angie's List and Jim's price was competitive and the project came in at his original price quote.
Jim's crew that built the deck were exceptional...paid a lot of attention to details to make sure everything was correct the first time...the old adage of measure twice and cut once was definitely in play during construction.
Sundecks exceeded mine and my wife's expectations....can't ask for more then that!
Since the project has been completed several of my neighbors have raved about the quality of the build and have asked me for Jim's number.
I would not hesitate using Jim's company again, and if you are considering a new deck, screened porch, garage or addition you won't go wrong by giving Jim a call.
A happy and satisfied customer....
In our experience with Sundecks, there were a couple of occasions where I had to follow up with Jim when we were drawing up the plans and getting estimates. And they did start the project about 10 days later than originally expected. But once they started on the porch, it was pretty much non-stop until they completed. In fact, they worked 4th of July (which they OK'd with me ahead of time). The only time they seemed to stop was when they were waiting on County inspectors to show up for the building permit inspections.
As the porch was being constructed, Jim was very open to a couple of changes I requested. He also had a few suggested changes for me, and went over them with me before they were done. And through all the little tweaks, he stuck to his original estimate and didn't try to nickle/dime me on changes. One potential miss, was when the roofers came out and put on the roof. What I wanted was a 12 inch overhang at the end of the porch. The roofers stopped the roof flush with the end of the porch. When I spoke to Jim that night,he said it would be no problem and he had the roofers come back out the next day and make it right. All of these experiences left me with the opinion that Jim was going to give me the porch I wanted, not the porch he wanted to build. Very focused on making the customer happy.
Our screened porch was really a dream of my wife's, and she couldn't be happier. She spends as much time as she can out there. I am very pleased with the quality of the construction, and with how quickly it was built once they started. Jim has a very experienced job foreman (also named Jim) and he did an awesome job. I would highly recommend Sundecks of Richmond for anyone planning to add a screened porch to their house.
One last thing worth sharing. I did my research on contractors to do my porch, through Angie's list and references from neighbors in my neighborhood. In the end, I selected 4 to evaluate. My evaluation included having them come out for a site visit to explain to me how they would approach and execute the project. I then down selected to 2, and had them come back out to give me an estimate of what it would cost, and to do drawings. I found Sundecks estimate to be very reasonable, and it was almost half as much as one of their major competitors. And even with a lower estimate, I got a little more (beaded vinyl ceiling vs just painting the wood white) from Sundecks than I was going to get from the competitor. But it wasn't just the cost that made my final decision. That was an eye-opener, but the final variable was something else. The competitor sent a sales guy to do the drawings and the estimate. Sundecks sent Jim. Jim also happens to own Sundecks, and that said something to me. The guy who has owned this company for almost 30 years, is also the salesman, the genreral contractor, and he was out there hammering nails on numerous occasions. He left me with the impression that this guy is going to get the job done, and make sure it's done right. And my impression was correct.
This is May 18, 2012 and we are still waiting on Jim Davidson to finish our porch. Due to stripes on the tongue and groove flooring Jim Davidson promised to have the floor sanded and sealed by March 31, 2012. We are still waiting for them to finish the floor. Meanwhile we can't use the porch. I wrote the original customer review just before Jim Davidson brought over his invoice with a $585.00 charge that we didn't know about or approve. We refused to pay this additional unapproved amount and Mr Davidson has now abandoned the job. Virginia law requires a contractor to have a change order for additional work/charges signed by both parties. We didn't have any idea that he was going to charge us more than the contract amount plus any approved work/charges.
I can't get Mr. Davidson to return my emails or phone calls now and we have to seek legal help to resolve this matter. I cannot recommend Sundecks of Richmond due to their business practices.
