As expected, Glenn did everything under his control to support my project needs.  Outside of his control were delays in my other contractors which limited the open time to complete installations before an inspection deadline.  I ended up selecting the other finalist in the bidding due availability. 
This in now way dampens my enthusiasm in recommending Rickman's Central Vacuum & Intercom Systems!

Dealing with Glen Rickman was a pleasure. Knowledgeable, friendly, punctual, and highly experienced. He along with two technicians installed the unit in approximately half a day. After that I had three problems within the first month and a half. Each time someone came quickly, diagnosed what they thought the problem was, explained it and attempted to resolve it. Unfortunately after two failed attempts (the unit was overheating) I told Glen I wanted a replacement. After calling the factory and learning they had a problem with a circuit overheating and that they came out with a new one, Glen obtained a replacement switch and installed it. We have not encountered any problems since then. Why if the factor knew there was a problem did they let a unit be delivered before being fixed is beyond me. I recognize it isn't Rickman's fault. I cannot say enough nice things about Glen and his staff. They are first rate. I think the price paid was fair and feel confident I will receive quality service in the future.

I contacted them about getting a central vacuum installed. Glenn Rickman came out that same day to look at the house and give me an estimate.

I asked them to install a vacuum system on three floors and the garage using the Hide-A-Hose system for the three outlets in the house. Three people came out as scheduled and worked about 6 hours to get everything installed. Nice guys and very hard workers. They only seemed to take breaks when the heat got to them, especially in the attic.

Everything checked out, but I decided I wanted a few more tools and a wand and power brush for each floor so they ordered the extra equipment.

When I went to use the system, it turned itself off after about 20 minutes. Glenn came back out and determined that some extra sound baffling inside the motor was restricting air flow so he removed it. No problem as I couldn't hear any difference in sound level after the change. Everything has worked great since then.

Our central vac system needed a cover for the outside vent, which was identified by a home inspector during the process of selling our house. After many phone calls and going to many vacuum shops we finally found Rickmans, which is about an hour away from our home. They were kind, helpful and polite over the phone, and made special arrangements to be in the shop so we could pick the part up and install it ourselves. What could of cost over a $100.00 for a service call, they were kind enough to sell us the part for $5.00....it was such a blessing! They truly know all about central vacuum systems, because other vacuum shops had no clue what we needed. They were professional and helpful, and we greatly appreciate the help they gave us.

My central vacuum system stopped working due to unknown causes.
Based on very positive reviews from Angie's List, I decided to try Rickman's. Right away on the telephone, I could tell from their questions, that they were very knowledgeable with regard to this type of equipment. They said they could be at my place (around 20 miles from their facility) within about two hours. They asked me to tell them the model number so they could be sure to show up with the proper equipment to repair any failed component.
Sure enough, the repairman from Rickman's showed up right on time, with a large box containing possible replacement parts, principle among which was a replacement motor, since following their inspection, they concluded my old motor had failed and frozen in position.
Within ten minutes, the repairman had replace the motor with a new one and put everything back together, as good as new.
He left within 20 minutes of his arrival, leaving a very satisfied customer.
Total cost of $409 conissted of $130 for the service call plus $279 for the new motor; I thought this was very fair.
I want to nominate Rickman's for Angie's page of happiness recognition.

a laundry shirt twist wire that got stuck and lowered the vacuum power by creating a clog in the system. I called Rickman's I and they came out quickly and resolved the problem professionally and charged me a reasonable price. I will continue to use them and would recommend them to anyone.

I tried the TurboCat at home on my rugs and found that it didn't do as good a job on the rugs as my upright vacuum did, even though my upright was old. I also tried the 12and quot; bare-floor brush on my kitchen floor and found that, oddly enough, it didn't function very well either. The problem with the 12and quot; bare-floor brush was that it was too wide. Because it was so wide, there was no vacuuming power, no suction, at either end of that 12and quot; brush. Basically, it was just sweeping the floor, rather than vacuuming it. If I put my hand on the brush, I could confirm that.

I cleaned both items well and drove the lengthy trip back to Rickman's in Lorton to return both items. The young woman there with whom I dealt was not pleased that I wanted to return 2 items. She accepted the return of the TurboCat, $117, but she refused to accept the return of the 12and quot; bare-floor brush. She claimed that I had scratched it, which was false. It was made of very hard, durable rubber/plastic; and unless you wanted to use a sharp knife on it, it really was not easily scratched at all!

The young woman, whose last name is Rickman, was most unpleasant, argumentative, and angry; there was no reasoning with her, so I left. In my opinion, there really is never a good reason to be rude and unpleasant to anyone; but apparently Miss Rickman thought otherwise. When I returned home, I tried to duplicate the non-existent scratch that she claimed I had made, but I was not able to - because the brush was made of such a hard, durable material.

The tank of H/P Vacu-Flo central vacuum tank that came with my home when it was built in 1968, was extremely difficult to empty; and with my allergies, I had to wear a dust mask when I emptied it. The entire set-up was very awkward and messy.

So ultimately, in November 2009, when I was ready to replace the entire system with one that wasn't as noisy and that had a disposable bag system (similar to my recently-purchased Oreck upright vacuum cleaner), instead of going back to Rickman's where I had been treated SO badly, I spent my $500 at another store!

MY RESPONSE TO RICKMAN'S RESPONSE: I just want to say and quot;THANK YOUand quot; - to Rickman's for stating the truth that the 12and quot; bare-floor brush was poorly designed. I knew that when I tried to use it. Perhaps Miss Rickman, with whom I dealt, was inexperienced in dealing with complaints and that's why she behaved badly. But we are all human and we all make mistakes. It takes someone, or a company run by someone, with integrity and ethics to admit when they've made a mistake, and I truly appreciate that.

I also want to thank them for their replacement offer, which I am accepting. And the free shipping is an added bonus! I will contact Rickman's and work with them to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion. It is good to find a company that backs their products with guarantees and replacements, rather than and quot;digging their heels inand quot; and saying that and quot;the customer is always WRONG!and quot; Unfortunately, I have experienced that too many times to count! Working with customers can only bring a company a GOOD reputation and in this case, a GOOD reputation is what Rickman's is earning! Thank you, Rickman's!

FOLLOW-UP: I contacted Rickman's and spoke with Mr. Glenn Rickman, a very nice and polite gentleman. He was most apologetic for Miss Rickman's behavior. We spoke of his kind offer to replace the floor brush. I asked about a postage-paid mailing label to return the brush, but he said that he'd just come over to pick up the old brush and bring a substitute. He did that today, May 23. He was so thoughtful that he even took his boots off before entering the house! Mr. Rickman brought several different brushes for me to chose from (which I thought was very nice, especially since some were probably more expensive than the one that I'd purchased) and he even gave a refund to me on another product that I didn't find particularly effective. He was very nice and he again apolized for the previous problem. It was a very positive meeting. I definitely decided that when I need the central vacuum system serviced, I will be calling Mr. Glenn Rickman. While Angie's List doesn't allow for a 5 Star rating, I am giving Rickman's a 5 Star rating anyway!

My central vac didn't have much power. We had a home warranty at the time and had another company come out. He had told me it was working as well as it could and that I need to upgrade the motor est $600. I called Rickmans with the expectation of spending that much. The employee instead showed us how to properly clean the unit and a couple of other adjustments that were needed. Unit now works great. Impressed that they didn't go for the easy sale and saved us lots of $.

My central vacuum system had never worked particularly well, and the manufacturer had suggested that it might not have been installed correctly. As it was no longer under warranty, I decided to hire a vacuum specialist to look at the installation. Mr. Rickman examined the system, and pointed out the problems with the installation, which were in fact quite different and much simpler than what the manufacturer had speculated from my description over the phone. He pointed out leaks and pipes that had been incorrectly installed. He discussed various options with me, and made recommendations for changes that would improve the unit's performance. His pricing seemed very reasonable, and he returned two weeks later with a helper and performed the work. The system is working significantly better now.

Rickmans provided both prompt and excellent service. The installation was done on time and for the exact amount of the quote. Nice people and very easy to deal with. When the house was built, part of it was pre-plumbed for a central vac, but when the previous owners finished their rec room, they never ran all the vacuum drops back to a central location. So in the rec room, Rickmans had to cut drywall to run all the pre-plumbed drops to a central location. They did this with minimal cutting to the drywall and put the cut pieces of drywall back in place, ready for mud and finishing. The spec'd a unit that was perfect for our house and we purchased additional accessories so there's a hose and attachments for each floor. They located all the jacks in good locations, which is critical for a central vacuum. This way we can reach every square inch of each floor with the vacuum. One thing Rickmans encouraged us to do was to vent the vacuum unit to the outside, so all the micro dust that you get from other standard vacs is removed from the house. They gave us detailed operating instructions and showed us how to maintain the unit. We also receive periodic reminder postcards to have the unit serviced. Overall an excellent experience and I'd use them again without hesitation.
