I had some personal scheduling issues, but--- unbelievably, their measuring technician, MehMet, came to our house at 0630 (yes, 6:30 am!) to do the measure and he showed up promptly-- enabling me to get the measurement done without taking time off work. (I am still totally amazed by this!)
Our job was a bit of a rush and Vickie jumped through some hoops to fit us into the schedule and, once we settled on a time for installation, the installers were there on time, working quickly and efficiently, without making a mess (and they did not once complain about the 47 steps they had to ascend in while carrying a slab of granite!)
The next day, when the plumber arrived to install the faucets, I learned that I gave Aand S bad information when I asked them to fabricate only one hole for each sink when I really needed 3 holes for each of the two sinks. Vickie was able to get a crew member over to our house within an hour (luckily we live very near to their shop!) to drill the necessary holes to fix the problem. The countertop looks fantastic!
Hats off the the team at Aand S! It was a pleasure working with them!
The not-so-good: Scheduling and logistics was frustrating (more below). Throughout the project, the sales rep that I worked with never really seemed to care if she had my business or not. She did not follow up with promised information and never called me when she said she would. She was fine to work with when we met in person, but she seemed somewhat scattered and disorganized. Maybe my experience would have been better if I'd worked with a different sales rep.
There were obviously internal communication problems related to scheduling. The day my old counters and sink were removed, I was told the tear-out would happen in the early morning (around 8 or 9) and then someone else would come by noon to measure for the new countertops. Well, no one had showed up by the time the business opened at 10:00, and when I called to find out what was going on they said, oops, another job had been scheduled instead of mine but they could come in the afternoon. However, the measurer still came at noon and took his measurements with my old counters still in place. That was a problem because I couldn't move my stove to its new position yet, so the existing counter was not the same length as the new one was going to be. I explained that to the guy and he kinda-sorta compensated for the change in his measurements. He scribbled the measurement on a scrap of cardboard (um, really? this is how it's done?), and luckily I saw the numbers. After the tear-out, I took my own measurements and realized the his were an inch too long. I called and told my sales rep. She said the measurer would come back the next morning; he never showed. I didn't really care because I was confident my measurements were correct, so we agreed over the phone to change the length. I was dismayed by the lack of professionalism in this process. Whatever happened to and quot;measure twice, cut onceand quot;?
The installation was scheduled for a Tuesday (or so I thought, based on a email from the sales rep), but bright and early (7:00 a.m.) Monday morning the installers showed up! I sent them away because (a) I had to go to work and (b) I had not finished repairing/sealing/repainting the drywall behind the backsplash area, which had been torn up quite a bit during removal of the old counters. (I was surprised at the amount of damage but I don't know if it was unavoidable.) I was told the counters could be installed the next day, but my sink and faucet couldn't be hooked up until Thursday because the plumber was going out of town (so, two different visits and double the time off from work). I said, no, I'll wait until Thursday for everything. So installation was scheduled for Thursday AFTERNOON. They showed up around 8:00 a.m. Good thing I hadn't left for work yet. At least they were consistent in not arriving when they were supposed to.
On the plus side, I got an apologetic email from the sales rep about the installation day mix-up, but it took her 2 days to send it.
Aand S is more expensive than the competition, but I was willing to give it a try for the convenience. It's a small vanity, so I expected everything to be easy to schedule and install. Scheduling was more challenging than it should be. I expected a trip for them to come to the condo to measure, but for installation, they originally said it would be two visits...one to remove the countertop and then one to install the stone and connect everything. It was odd that it took some work to have the time appointments happen at once. I'm busy and didn't have the time to be at the house for multiple windows of time.
The stone itself is beautiful, but the small backsplash was cut shorter than expected so it didn't touch the bottom of the mirror as discussed. Part of that was due to the fact that the mirror wasn't 100% level, but it was still short on both sides and along the wall, which meant I had to do unexpected paint touch up. Not a huge deal, but not what I wanted.
All in all, it came out fine, but it was more time and effort than necessary, especially since I felt like I paid a premium.
The cabinets aren't due to come until the end of the week so I have not seen them yet but I will return to give a review once they have arrived.
We moved on to the kitchen. When I moved into my condo the kitchen was set up for handicap access (base cabinet under the sink had not be installed and there was a space next to the range which allowed access to the countertop). The kitchen cabinets were approximately 7 years old and much to my dismay the style was no longer manufactured by Aristokraft. I did not want hand crafted cabinets to exactly match the existing ones - the cost was prohibitive - I wanted to match as closely as possible the color and style. Mike listened and did exactly that. I brought home samples, brought in my cabinet doors, paint samples and with both Mike and Vickie's help did a dang good job of doing of doing a match. I would drop into the store during the process and if Mike was not there Vickie stepped in and helped. Next was picking the granite which I find can be nerve racking because of the cost. With patience and guidance we worked thru matching samples and I found the stone that was perfect. Again, Mike steered me to the 'lower cost' slabs (if there is such a thing when picking granite slabs).
It was time to get the work started. We worked together to coordinate the schedule. George came in to remove the old counter tops and disconnect the plumbing. He was extremely careful in everything he did, not a mark or dent was made in my home. I even think the condo was a bit cleaner than it was before he started his work. He was friendly and pleasant the entire time. Will came in to do the templating for the granite - again, a very good person to work with. The granite was installed, plumbing hooked up and I am one very satisfied customer.
The removal and installation were schedule for two separate days that I requested. The person who came to disconnect the plumbing and do the tear out arrived on time as scheduled. He cleaned as he went and was careful not to damage anything. He told me that the existing faucet would not work with the new countertops and said I would either need to get it modified or purchase a new one. I decided to purchase a new faucet from Aand S and he called to let Mike know and recommended a faucet which would work and was very similiar to the one I had. I stopped by the store, looked at faucets, and chose the one that the plumber had recommended.
The installers arrived on time as scheduled. The stone cutter was able to do the entire L-Shaped counter in one piece so there would not be a seam. My kitchen and entry hall are small so it was a very tight fit, but the installers managed to get the counter into the kitchen and in place without damaging anything. They asked me about the positioning of the counter on the pass through and had me select the color of the caulk.
I was very pleased with the entire process.
I immediately called the store to find out what happened on their end. They told me the piece was ready but they had it in another room and couldn't find it when the contractor was there. I asked, in light of their mistake, if they could have it delivered? They said no one was available that day or the next morning to deliver it.
I called my contractor to find out what this meant for him. His options were to return to the store (25 minutes each way) or let his guys go for the day because they needed the piece to complete the shower.
When I called the store back to express my frustration as a customer, their response was --and quot;what's the big deal, your contractor can just come back and get it.and quot; I tried to explain how their mistake was creating work for my contractor when he should be on-site at my house not making two trips to get a piece that was supposed to be ready. Not to mention that their mistake was holding up my contractor's workers who were now sitting around doing nothing because they needed this piece. Did I mention that I had even called that morning to tell them my contractor's name so they would have the piece ready for him.
In short, their attitude was insulting and their response unsympathetic. While I can understand that they had no resolution for me, their tone on the phone was obnoxious and belittling. Instead of expressing true regret, they kept suggesting that my contractor just drive back.
I understand that we made a small order that was not a money maker for them, but I would not work with this store in the future.
One note, I spoke to a woman name Rachel in the beginning when this situation began. Unlike the other people at the store, Rachel was polite and very courteous . She made no excuses for the mistake and tried to find an honest solution. Unfortunately, when I called back, simply to convey my frustration and disappointment, Rachel was out.
"For $750 the customer received a complete estimate and design of their entire apartment (not just kitchen and bath), which included 3D renderings, design layouts and floor plans. We elected not to peruse the project after the extent of how much existing polybutylene pipes needed to be replaced."
