Mark and his team installed my doors and windows five years ago. I was so pleased, the workers were courteous, efficient and on time. The Provia Door is an outstanding product and looks as gorgeous now as it did when they installed it. This company is amazing, they just responded to a request I had, five years after the original installation. That's a company you want to do business with, they stand by their products and continue to be courteous. I would highly recommend them.

I had received quotes from several other window and door installers, including the large national brands. I actually put down payments with two different installers, but each came back saying the had underbid the job after the engineer came to measure. So we voided the contracts. I couldn't find installers on NextDoor from neighbors, and frankly, Angie's List and Thumbtack didn't have many leads for sliding glass doors installers. The job by Home Exteriors Energy Consultants Inc went very well. After the two previous voided contracts, I broadened my search for more specialists. I work in Tyson's Corner, and found a local showroom on Google Maps. So I decided to visit the storefront unannounced to see if they could help. The showroom has a sliding glass door, exactly what I needed. It's the L'egance Patio Door by Thermal Industries out of Pittsburgh. I had the opportunity to speak to the owner and he indicated they've been ordering and installing this door for many years and his crew does cut-out installations all the time. My primary concern was energy efficiency because this door would go near our dining area. He provided pamphlets with the rating information (U-Factor under 0.30 is EnergyStar). After a few more quotes from other vendors, I called Home Exteriors Energy Consultants Inc and decided to move forward. The price quote was at the lower-end of about 10 different quotes. My gut told me the quote was lower because this company knew what they were doing. Door prices are published online, so I could tell the other vendors were heavily padding their quotes. Home Exteriors Energy Consultants knows what they are doing! Professional and efficient. The crew showed up on time. 4-5 installers came, and despite a rather serious rain downpour and rainy morning, they completed the job in about four hours, always addressing my concerns about proper insulation. As luck would have it, they already had the door in stock because another customer didn't want it anymore. So it took less than a week to schedule and complete the job. Usually, they said, door orders take 2 weeks. The other vendors said 6-10 weeks. Overall, I'm very happy with the door and service. I've written this review because I had so many problems finding a reasonably priced installer who could give me an accurate quote. These guys are very reliable and professional. They install sliding glass doors with frequency.

We purchased a Provia front door, transom, and sidelights from them in 2016. Overall, we've been very satisfied with the Provia door, the transom, and sidelights. They are quality products with solid performance and great looks. However, the installation was a terrible process, as was a follow up service call this past month, 2019. During installation in 2016, the crew arrived but didn't have a lead I could communicate with very well. They started with removal of the existing door/transom/sidelights and that went well. But they had obvious issues with trying to install the replacement set, there seemed to be a problem with how tightly it fit the opening. They started racking the door/sidelights at the corners, using pry bars to wedge the unit into place, ended up pulling it out and trying again twice, then cutting away some of the house framing and trying again. Fearing for the glass and structure, I finally told them to stop work and called the owner and told him he or a foreman needed to get out here. Both showed up within an hour. After considerable effort, the group finally got the door installed. Then they found they didn't have enough of the right PVC wrapping to finish the exterior so it matched what was installed above the door/transom. After a lot of discussion and no real alternative, I agreed to have the textured wrapping used. The job was finally finished, taking hours longer than it should have. We've been happy with it since then, until... Earlier this year, 2019, a visitor pointed out the PVC wrapping had split at the bottom of the exterior door jamb. We couldn't see how it was actually supposed to be connected or fixed, so we contacted the company. We were told someone would stop by to evaluate/fix it and we asked to be notified when. The split continued to grow up along the seam while we waited for a response. After a couple of weeks, we came home and found the owners business card in the door, but no indication of the problem having been fixed. We called and were told they weren't sure what the problem was, the wrapping couldn't be put back in place and someone else would come out to work on it. We asked for an appointment so we could be there and see what the problem was: swollen wood, water damage, etc., and were told they didn't do appointments. We didn't hear anything for a few more weeks, so we called Provia to ask how we got warranty work done. Provia apparently called the company who finally called us and asked what the problem was. I told the lady it had now been two months, their customer service was terrible, we had to call them to get any information about the repair, and I wanted an appointment; she said they didn't do that sort of thing. I told her the owner needed to call me directly. He called and basically said the same thing, asked us not to call Provia, said the wrapping wasn't covered by Provia's warranty, they would stop by and fix it if they could, and went on about how long they'd been business. I told him with their customer "service" it was a marvel, he had told us the entire installation was covered by the vaunted Provia warranty, and an appointment with me there was the only way it was going to be done. He finally relented and agreed their repairman would call and set a time to come out. Another week+ goes by and at 7am one morning I get a phone call from the guy that's supposed to fix the wrapping. He again asks if we really need to be there; I relate we have video doorbell that has to be disconnected for the work to be done (it's on the affected wrapping) and we want to see what the problem is. He starts to argue with me about where my doorbell is located on the framing. He finally relents I probably know where my doorbell is located and sets a time. A man (Ernest) shows up, let's me know he's not the guy that called, and proceeds to go to work. I have to say Ernest was very knowledgeable, careful, courteous, and did things right. He removed the wrapping and we found a fungus, like a mushroom, had started growing inside the wrapping at the base, was slowly growing up between the wood door framing and wrapping, breaking the seam and continuing to grow. It had started to eat the wood post, just starting to make it spongy. As the wrapping was sealed with no signs of water drips/leakage, we don't know how it got there. He removed the wrapping, removed/replaced the affected wood, treated the area with a bleach solution, and re-wrapped the post with new material, changing wrapping direction to mirror the other side of the door as it should have been to start with. Hopefully, it doesn't re-occur. We're appreciative of Ernest and his work, we'd give him an A rating on his own. However the company's policies on setting appointments for needed warranty work, misrepresentation of what's actually warranted during their sales call, the less than stellar customer information flow, and inability to meet a reasonable customer request for an appointment and information earns Home Exterior's a significantly lower rating.
Response from Home Exteriors Energy Consultants Inc

"Our installation required additional work due to an existing " Racking " issue with his existing frame, we took care of it and installed the door without any charge for additional work, when he called us for the service I went out immediately to inspect and left him my card to let him know I was there, He insisted on having an exact date and time to come and fix it under our labor warranty (not covered by Provia) my crew could not give him an exact day and time and we explained to him since it was an outside issue, he did not need to be there. he would not accept this, therefor it took a couple weeks to make arrangements with him. finally we went out and removed the trim piece to find that a mushroom grew from under his threshold possibly from an area in the basement wall below the door.. This is not covered under any warranty yet we removed it and completely replaced his exterior capping for no charge. we did everything we could do to make sure this was takin care of for our customer but he was very difficult to work with and I guess you just cant make some people happy no matter how much you try..."

We met the owner, Mark, at the Dulles Home Expo. He gave us a great price on a new front door. We appreciated that he was straightforward and did not try to sell us something we didn't want or need. We also had him replace the storm door and exterior trim that was in pretty bad shape. Mark and his team arrived early and they were finished with all the work that day. They protected the inside of our home as they worked, painted all the new trim inside and out and made sure that the doors worked perfectly before they left. We will definitely work with Mark again in the future! Andrea in Arlington, VA

It was fantastic. The whole front door entry way was replaced. I was really unsure how the finished product would look and I am so pleased. Mark, the owner helped me come up with the right door for the entry way. I was completely overwhelmed with what door to go with. (There are so many choices). He gave me a great design showing the new door on my house. He took into account the design of my house and the dark beam ceilings of my entryway. No other company I got a quote from did this. They just asked me what I wanted and I was unsure. We are very excited with the new door and entryway! Love all the glass, the door color and the hardware. I would use Home Exteriors Energy Consultants again!

The owner, Mark Horner, met with us at our home to give us an estimate and adapt his services to our needs. One of the selling points for his company was that they don't do up-charge once they start on the projects as other companies do. He also sources his windows from a reliable manufacturer in creating high-quality windows with great insulation, easy to open feature, and also being spring-loaded. Agreed on the price the same day and construction was to begin after the windows arrived. Less than a month later, his crew (6-7 guys) came by and did our whole house (about 30 windows) in a day. They did a great job, cleaned up after themselves, and very nice guys. They did not need much overwatch and worked diligently throughout the day. We chose Home Exteriors Energy Consultants for the fair price and good reviews. Mark even fixed our sliding deck door on our first meeting with no charge. Thanks Mark and company, we highly recommend you!

Superb job! Crew was very courteous and professional. One of the doors was inadvertently left at the shop that was about an hour away but they had someone drive it down so that the job could be completed all the same day. The doors look great and function perfectly. Our only small markdown is the price...on paper it looks like a good price and we know you get what you pay for. We are new to the area and still experiencing sticker shock for many home improvement projects so this may just be another case of this. We had never hear of ProVia doors but were very pleased with the color selection and quality.

This is my second and equally positive review of Home Exteriors. I had three windows replaced with four new windows of a different design to complement the "window wall" (very large windows that virtually cover an entire wall) Home Exteriors first installed for me a few weeks ago. Mark, the owner, is thoroughly professional and responsive; more of a partner, really, than "just" the service provider. In addition to his ready availability, he managed to accommodate my schedule for this installation. His crew was practiced and polished and tolerated my few questions and observations with patience and understanding. The results, from both the outside and inside, are fantastic. I'd say you certainly get what you pay for but in Mark's case, I think you get something more than what you pay for. Some while ago I used other window and door installers for one-time jobs. They were okay, but I'll return to Mark and Home Exteriors for anything more.

I had two long but narrow slider windows in my family room replaced with three very large (tall and wide) double-hung windows, essentially creating a "window wall." From start to finish, Mark was readily available and his team provided great service and professional installation. Of note, Jose, the install crew leader, paid great attention to detail, patiently and fully answered my questions and ensured that I was satisfied before they left. The transformation in my room is incredible. Mark earned my trust and I'll definitely work with him on additional projects.

It was cancelled, it was too expensive. I was trying to get a door, and he said it was around $5000 so I had to cancel. I told him I couldn't do it, it was too expensive, and he said okay.
Response from Home Exteriors Energy Consultants Inc

"We do not service DC We did not do any work for this person Because she was an Angies list member I wanted to help her, she wanted a quote on a custom Provia door , material and labor came to about 5000.00 , She had no Idea how much a quality custom door costs today and said it was to expensive. I replied to her right away and gave her all discounts. I just couldn't help her for what she wanted to spend (300.00-500.00) This person should not be able to give my company any rating at all."

This was the second time that we worked with Home Exteriors - the first time was for a patio door, and this time was for windows. We were very happy with our first experience which led us to use them again. When meeting with Mark to discuss window options, he was honest in the options and pricing varieties and took our budget into consideration as well. We got a fair and very good price for our new windows and have been very happy with them so far. The day-of workers were fast and hard working. They got to work right away and once finished, cleaned everything up. The new windows look great and make our house look much more updated. We look forward to enjoying our energy efficient windows throughout the seasons!

They came in on time, replaced both doors and both windows quickly and efficiently. They did excellent work, even going above and beyond and hanging a curtain for me in a hard to reach location.
They cleaned up after themselves. We had a fantastic experience and look forward to working with them again.

Outstanding job.  We had contacted another well known window provider and were not happy with the estimate or ability to understand what we were looking for.  It seemed as if they were more interested in making a sale rather than working with us during the initial visit.  Mark Horner was different.  He listened to what we wanted, made suggestions, and responded to our requests.  We replaced all the windows initially and then asked him to install a specially ordered door  Although the door and a large picture window had to be ordered separately Mark Horner stayed involved and informed us of the status every step of the way.  He never questioned what needed to be done and ensured we were completely satisfied prior to final payment.  We were very comfortable working with him and his crew.

From initial contact, estimate, measurement, removal and installation, everything they did was outstanding.  This is a great company to do business with because the owner is involved from the beginning and all the workers are professionals. The price was fair, the work was done quickly and carefully and the crew cleaned everything up when they were finished.  This is the third time we have used this company and we will use them again.

I was referred to Home Exteriors by a neighbor and am happy that I contacted the company. I corresponded with Mark over e-mail about the job I wanted to have done and received an estimate via e-mail since it was a pretty basic job. I had a very good experience when Mark came to my home to complete measurements and the door arrived earlier than he predicted. His office called to schedule the install date and were flexible as my schedule was slightly challenging. The team of 3 arrived to do the work and were efficient and worked hard. The new door looks great and we're very pleased with our purchase.
