Going to this shop to get a watch battery replaced is like asking a master cabinet maker to assemble IKEA furniture. Mr. Lam is a craftsman and he may be the only one of his kind in the DC area. It is not easy to find a competent Rolex repair shop. I researched a long time and found Herndon Clock and Watch Co. on the Internet. I brought my Rolex in because the crystal had chipped. Mr. Lam told me the crystal was plastic which I didn't know. I thought it was sapphire as it should be. He also pointed out the stem wasn't working properly. I had had the stem repaired some five years ago and noticed it wasn't locking easily, but didn't know that that wasn't the way it should be. This means the other repair hadn't been done correctly. The watch was also gaining time despite my having it serviced repeatedly over the years. Mr. Lam gave me a written estimate with the serial number, value estimate etc. said it would take three weeks. Okay so it took four, but the watch was completely refurbished. Beautiful new sapphire crystal, the band and clasp tightened and cleaned, and the stem locks as it should.. Best of all, the watch keeps perfect time now. The cost for the service was reasonable and within the estimate -- not cheap but that's the cost of owning a Rolex. I recommend Mr. Lam highly to service high quality time pieces such as Rolexes but not change watch batteries. He could probably do it, but that would be a waste of his talent.

My watch isn't high-end, but I like to support local business, and replacing a battery when the case is a little tricky to open is something I'm happy to leave to professionals. I also hate having to park and hike into a mall kiosk. However, $12 is still a quarter of the cost of the watch itself (MSRP, I paid about $30 online) and they told me to come back the next day - when I'd dropped it off at about 3 p.m. I guess my little watch isn't worth prioritizing over the Rolexes and Omegas. I won't prioritize giving them my business at their current prices and wait time.

Mr. Lam has been very accurate with his estimates and he dose the work within the time he says. For me, has replaced a part of the clasp on my Omega wristband. When I took it to a jeweler to have the work done they kept the watch for over a month and then came back and told me that in addition to repairing the wristband they would have to perform maintenance to the tune of over $500.00. Mr. Lam gave me a quote and a two week window (to order the part) and sure enough the watch was done for the price and in the time frame he quoted. I bought my wife a Rolex (online) for her Birthday and within months it was not keeping accurate time; I sent the watch back to the seller and they (supposedly) serviced the watch and sent it back; within a month the watch stopped running and I was afraid I had been taken! I went to Mr. Lam and asked him to first verify that the watch was genuine and then let me know what was wrong. He took the watch detailing the specifics and in two days verified it was genuine but that it needed to be serviced (lubricated and cleaned) his price was in-line with what I had read a major service/overhaul should cost. When I got the watch back it looked better than when I received it from the seller; it was like new, the crystal was buffed, the armband watch case were cleaned and also buffed with all the surface scratches removed. Since then the watch runs perfectly!!

I took them an antique pocket watch to repair. They were very knowledgeable and told me a little about the watch. They cleaned and repaired it. Took about four weeks, but they told me that when I dropped it off. Work was good, completed when they said it would be and for the price they estimated. Nice family owned business.

He was on time. His prices were reasonable and he was very courteous.

They replace the battery in my watch when it runs down and they give me new straps. I have not had any fancy repairs but they are real nice. I walk in and they can handle me quit fast. It is over in a few minutes. My watch has a new battery and a new strap and I am ready to go.

Mr. Lam arrived promptly when he said he would and proceeded directly to work on the clock. When he had finished he showed us what he had done and some maintenance that we could do so we wouldn't have to call him all the time. He was courteous and knowledgeable about our clock.

It is a 250-year old English bell clock that needed complete restoration. All the cogs were snooped so they weren't catching and they were not keeping time. There were no teeth left on the gears. It was an inheritance from husband's grandfather. It is really neat. The face is all wooden. The clock has brass accents. The face is white, but it is all hand-painted and there is a pretty picture of a Victorian painting on the top. I had that clock and another little clock repaired. The main repair on the grandmother clock cost $1000.00 and the little clock cost $100.00. I went with Herndon because they were a third of the price that was quoted by another clock repair company. They just hand-delivered the clocks and installed them 2 weeks ago. The guy who fixed them showed up at 7.30 in the morning to install them. They had to make the parts. It's just a husband and wife that own the clock shop. They were very reasonable priced.

The owner of the business was the person who did the work. He was on time, brought everything he needed, and didn't just fix the jammed chain, but checked out the entire inner workings, adjusted several things that needed adjusting, leveled the clock, explained to me how everything worked, and cleaned up after himself perfectly. He charged me exactly the fee he had quoted to me for a house call, although it was apparent to me that he did much more work than he had expected to do.

It took almost a month for the repair to be made, but that was at least partly due to an emergency in the family, it appears. The staff in the shop were pleasant. I haven't taken the clock back to my mother yet (she lives in another state), but I assume the clock is repaired.

The grandfather clock's chimes sound better than they ever have after having the chimes and hammers adjusted properly.
