My sister was so happy she wanted to kiss him
A special shout out to Duane from our horses...you are the best!
First - the pre-drilling meetings - we had a couple because the space was very tight and there was a large tree that was a concern (i.e. making sure it was not damaged). Their concern for our concerns were notable. In addition to the tree, they were going to need to use my neighbor's driveway to bring in their 40 ft drilling rig to reach the edge of our property - with some low hanging wires and a narrow area near the neighbor's house. They assured us that all could be done safely. Then they did it. How their driver backed that rig up the driveway and was able to angle it onto our property - well I watched and I am still not sure how he did it. One guy had to sit on the crain and hold up the telephone and cable wires to my neighbors home with 2x4s so as to not bring things down. The drill had to go up through a few branches of the maple we were concerned about (we thought we were going to need to trim a major branch out of) - no problem - about 20 leaves shrivelled because of the rig's blower - that was it. They drilled a 455 ft deep hole in about a day and a half.
The trench to the house was dug by a sub-contractor, Turf Works, who was every bit as good to have working on our property as Groundwater. The small hoe they brought had to create a 4 ft deep trench right up to the house (part of it under a brand new roof) and they did an excellent job.
A Groundwater crew then finished the required work both inside and outside the house - installing the pipes needed to bring the underground temperature to the heat pump. They need to go through the foundation into crawl space filled with dirt. They brought the lines up and there ran them across exhaust pipes (what they installed are insulated) so that when looking into the area through the access door it has a very neat appearance. Turf Works then returned to do the final fill-in and remove the debris (crushed gneiss rock) and re-grade the area. Turf Works also removed some other plant debris that had been created when the trench was dug. You cannot tell where the geothermal well is located and once we re-plant the area you will not be able to tell anything was done at all.
Things to know:
Drilling is messy. Groundwater put up a fence with heavy plastic to hold in the slury that was created (water is used in the drilling process) and that needed to stay there until all was done. The work is also weather dependent. After the well was dug there was almost daily rain preventing the trench from being dug for more than a week (the ground needed to dry after the rains stopped. The drilling is also pretty noisy. If you have a neighbor that sleeps during the day, they will not be happy (our neighbors were great!). And if you are having a geothermal system installed, the work takes time overall. Well, trench, running the lines, coordinating with the interior work, filling in the well/trench, removing debris - all takes time as different contractors are involved. May 9 start - May 29 finish for us.
Groundwater Systems and Turf Works were excellent to work with (Mark at Groundwater took care of scheduling with John Shultis at Turf Works - I went out to work with John when they were removing debris and re-grading the affected area). There is no dancing around required with these guys. They tell you what they can do, lay out the process and then they get the work done. I would recommend them to anyone.
