This was a bad experience. I think that this carpenter is probably better for new construction than in working on an old house. After the first day on the job, we thought that the work was sloppy and that the carpenter was using poor materials to replace the old ones. When we pointed this out, he became defensive and subsequently refused to finish the job. After many negotiations, he finally came back to finish on the condition that he be paid immediately when the job was finished. On the last day, I gave him his check in the morning. He took off at lunch and then did not return until the following Monday--leaving us with an unfinished job over the weekend. Now that it is over, the porch seems fine, but he was very difficult to work with.
