"THINGS BEGAN WELL BUT WHEN WE ARRIVED TO DO THE WORK, A LOT OF CHANGES WERE MADE, CAUSING US TO SPEND MANY (UNPAID) HOURS AT THE GREENHOUSE. THE DESIGN CHANGED MANY TIMES DURING THE DAY, AND A JOB THAT SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A COUPLE HOURS TOOK ALL DAY. AS WE WERE FINISHING, WE DISCUSSED A NEW DRIVEWAY THEY WANTED. I TOLD THEM THE WINTER MONTHS ARE BEST FOR ME TO DO THAT TYPE OF WORK. I EVEN OFFERED THEM 10% OFF IF THEY WOULD WAIT BECAUSE OUR SCHEDULE WAS SO FULL. WHEN I CALLED WITH THE QUOTE, THEY WERE SURPRISED BY THE AMOUNT. THEY CHANGED THE SCOPE OF THE WORK AND AGAIN, I SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE DESIGN FOR WHICH I RECEIVED NO COMPENSATION. IN FACT, THIS EXPERIENCE INSPIRED US TO CHANGE SOME OF OUR POLICIES FOR PROJECT WORK. I FEEL THAT WE WERE MORE THAN FAIR! THEY WERE ON A BUDGET AND I HELPED THEM OUT, WE COMPLETED THE WORK TO THEIR SATISFACTION AND ON BUDGET DESPITE THE MANY CHANGES, I WAS VERY CLEAR ABOUT THE DRIVEWAY AND THE TIME FRAME FOR THE WORK, AND I SPOKE WITH THEM SEVERAL TIMES. IN THEIR OWN WORDS, THEY “REALLY LIKED US.” I CARE A GREAT DEAL ABOUT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND WANT OUR CLIENTS TO BE PLEASED WITH OUR WORK (AS THEY WERE…). I APPROACH THE INTERACTIONS I HAVE WITH EACH OF OUR CLIENTS AS A RELATIONSHIP. AS WITH ALL RELATIONSHIPS, SUCCESS REQUIRES BOTH PARTIES TO WORK TOGETHER, ESTABLISH CLEAR EXPECTATIONS, AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY. UNFORTUNATELY, I FEEL AS THOUGH THEY AND I WERE NOT ABLE TO DO THE THINGS NECESSARY TO BUILD SUCH A RELATIONSHIP."
