My son purchased a 2012 Toyota Camry from Carmax last Tuesday evening. He is a Marine, and on leave. One of the chief reasons we did this was their "5 day money back guarantee". We felt that he couldn't go wrong since he could return it should it not be mechanically sound. On Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., my son was sitting at our mechanic business. Within 20 seconds, our mechanic informed my son that the car had been wrecked. There was clearly debris in the paint, and there were indicators all over the car that it had been wrecked. Within 2 hours, we were at Carmax for his "money back".
This is when the manager explained to us that the buyer is often aware that the car has been wrecked even if it isn't on the CarFax. And the buyer may not disclose that information to the person doing the inspection. Given our mechanic had spotted the problems so quickly, we have to question the caliber of people doing their inspections. The high pressure push was on to get us to take another car from them. Previous rental cars, fleet cars, and cars from northern states. No thank you. Money back, please?
My son and I headed back to the window. He had given $2000 cash as his down payment. He doesn't make a lot of money as a Marine. This was his only cash. And his line of credit was tied up with the loan on a car he already returned. So, imagine our surprise when we were informed that he would received his check in 10-14 days? How did a 5 day money back guarantee become 10-14 days? After arguing with the lady, and her phone call to corporate (where no one answered), we left and went home and called our lawyer.
Thanks to our attorney, we managed to get my son's money the following day. It seemed that the wait of 10-14 days came as a surprise to the people at corporate. How many people like us have been forced to sit without a car? Or accept another car they didn't really want because their money was tied up at Carmax?
Deception about the car. Deception about their guarantee. We headed to McGeorge Toyota. Buyer beware. Don't buy at Carmax unless you have spare funds, and a great mechanic to go over that car with a fine tooth comb. Oh, and a good lawyer.

It was an okay experience. There are a couple of glitches but other than that, we were fairly happy. We just purchased vehicles from Carmax in the past. If we're looking at used cars, we usually start there. They were very helpful, very courteous and very knowledgeable.

I bought a car from CarMax that needed a window motor repair. They of course provided the service no charge. Unfortunately, the car needed to be sent to a dealership after being worked for a few days at their in-house service department, which added several days to the service. During the process, they were up-front and communicative about the status and called daily to let me know how things were progressing. While I obviously wish it hadn't taken the extra step and that the technician had been able to identify the need to send to the dealership earlier on, the event didn't hurt my opinion that the service department can accomplish whatever is needed. I rather appreciate the fact that they were willing to send to an expert on my specific model car rather than try and tinker with it and potentially not solve the issue correctly.

We were looking for a new SUV, and poked our heads around the local dealerships, as well as local dealer's websites. We were looking for something within our budget, in a specific color, and in good used condition. Though they didn't have one in-state, they were happy to ship one up from Florida! That did cost us and extra fee, but well worth it to get exactly the car we wanted. Since their selection of cars is so huge, we easily found what we needed there. The car was indeed in very good but used condition.

We liked how the sales process worked over at Carmax. They were professional and helpful. They were friendly and knowledgeable when it came to answering any questions. Really, we were pretty impressed and we feel like when it comes to buying a car, they are a place we would feel good about recommending based on our own recent purchase from them.

I was trying to locate and specific vehicle and Rick had all the answers. He was personable and honest. He showed me similar vehicle of the type and style that I was interested in and actually suggested a great option I hadn't considered myself. I felt that he was knowledgeable and didn't write me off for being female. I didn't buy the car that day, but it was very refreshing experience. I am still actively searching and if I can find what I want at CarMax in Richmond or on line I will make every effort to buy a car from Rick!
