NORTHERN DECKWORKS

We could not be more pleased with the screen porch Tim O’Neill designed and his Northern Deckworks team, led by John, built. Both functional and beautiful, Tim’s design is perfect for us. We opted for the EZ Breeze window system and a gas fireplace. This will enable us to enjoy our porch nearly year-round. From the outset, Tim and John kept us updated on the status of our job, permits, when deliveries would occur, when the crew would be on site, etc. The crew was respectful of our property, and the job site was clean every day when they left. From the plans all the way through the final product, Tim insisted on quality – of materials and construction – and attention to detail. The result is very aesthetically pleasing. Everyone who’s seen the porch has commented on how it’s so much more than “just a porch.” Tim’s artistic design has become a wonderful reality. We look forward to enjoying our Northern Deckworks porch for many years.

New screened room and deck from Northern Deckworks. Project went very well Throughout the process, the owner, Tim ONeil, communicated with us and was on site frequently to monitor the work. We also had them subcontract to install gutters all the way around the house to match the Porch. Prices were highly competitive and the craftsmanship is high quality. Keep in mind that you are buying a "look" from Northern Deckworks, so do not expect a catalog of custom design work and features that you might see from some of the bigger/chain builders. You might want to customize everything and have a very specific architecture you want - I would not recommend Northern Deckworks. However if you love the woodsy lakehouse or chalet look that Northern Deckworks is known for them you'll be getting a very good value and know that the work will be done properly and professionally.

Tim and his Northern Deckworks team did a fantastic job in building our mahogany and cedar screen in porch and deck. The craftsmanship is top notch. We really like the EZ-Breeze window system. All you need to do is either slide the window down or up for great air flow. The screen keep all the bugs out. Our first appointment, Tim came by the house, took measurements and drew the plans up. Tim was in regular communication with us during Covid, responded promptly to text and calls. Inform us the status of the built permits. During the initial built the crew came by 6 days a week, work long hours and they cleaned up nicely at the end of each day. The crew were always clear in advance if they would miss a day or two because they were awaiting for materials due to supply issues. Tim stay in contact during the duration of the project, informing us of any changes that came up as well as any delivery to the house. We highly recommend Northern Deckworks.

Our new screen porch and deck, built by Northern Deckworks is absolutely beautiful and we are very happy with the results. I first started researching companies to build this for us in the summer of 2020, and once I found Northern Deckworks and saw their work it was hard to even entertain selecting another company. We did meet with a few but Tim’s price was competitive and the final product looked superior to anything else we saw. Tim came out to the house when he said he would, drew up the plans on site, and made promptly made changes when requested to accommodate our wishes. We did end up having to wait fifteen months for the project to begin due to material shortages and crew availability due to COVID, but this was not a problem for us since we wanted our new addition to be right and not rushed. Tim was in regular communication with us, responded promptly, and came to check on the progress in person numerous times. John was the lead carpenter and Jason and Darwin were also on the crew. They were talented, meticulous and did a beautiful job. I am so impressed with their craftsmanship and incredible attention to detail. The porch design is stunning. They cleaned up nicely at the end of each day as well. They were always clear in advance if they would miss a day or two, having to return to a previous job needing to be wrapped up that was awaiting a backordered item due to supply chain issues. We’ve had frustrations with contractors in the past for not showing up and this was never the case. We are looking forward to enjoying our time on our new porch and deck for many years to come. I would recommend Tim O’Neil and Northern Deckworks to anyone looking to build an outdoor addition onto their home.

The design and installation work on our deck was just spectacular. Tim was extremely thorough in his design and advice (creates something that blends so nicely with our house's unique style) and the installation crew led by John was top notch. It was clear they took pride in their craft and didn't take shortcuts. The whole process was very smooth and painless for us as homeowners. The work was just completed on our new deck and porch by Northern Deckworks and we couldn't be happier with the results, and the whole process in general. Northern Deck Works constructed my porch with the highest level of expertise and care. Tom O'Neil and the team at Northern Deck Works are true craftsman that only use the best products (cedar, mahogany etc) to custom build a porch that puts others to shame! Northern Deckworks did a fantastic job! The carpenters that Tim O’Neill hires are true craftsman and their work was phenomenal. We have remodeled practically every room in our home and this project was by far the most professional and the workmanship exceeded our expectations. Tim O'Neil, the owner, came to discuss the project with us and provided an initial sketch and estimate at the first visit. We were impressed by his freehand drawing which he created as we explained what we wanted. It was obvious that he knew what he was doing and that he had done it before. We saw another project that the company had completed and knew right away that we wanted to work with the company. His team showed up punctually and started construction on time. They worked through 19 degree weather and snow to complete the work on time. The crew was very friendly, knowledgeable and skilled. They answered all of our questions in order to keep us informed of the progress. We noticed the quality of the work immediately as the deck and porch started to take shape. We've had multiple guests comment on the quality of the work. We've recommended the company to everyone! Two of our friends have hired Northern Deckworks to have similar work done and have been completely satisfied. When the work was complete we were amazed at how the finished product looked like the original hand drawing only more beautiful. We could not be happier with the result!

Tim O'Neil's Northern Deckworks did a fantastic job constructing our deck!  We selected Northern Deckworks after interviewing several companies, all of which had top ratings on Angie's List and other websites.  Tim O'Neil, the owner, came to discuss the project with us and provided an initial sketch and estimate at the first visit.  He provided us with a projected start date and when that date came, his team (Juan and Fidel) showed up punctually and started construction.  They worked quickly and smoothly, constructing the supports and support structure in just over two days.  They prepared the ground for pouring the concrete reinforced slab that would serve as the floor of the waterproof storage area, and installed the drainage system between the joists.
As the construction continued and our deck began to take shape over the first week, we noticed the infinite care that Tim's team took to make sure that all construction was done to exacting standards, fitting all joint pieces carefully and making sure that spacing of the floorboards was precise.  Furthermore we noticed the care they also took in cleaning up the work site at the end of each day, sweeping away leaves that had fallen, sawdust, spare bits of deck material.  Juan and Fidel were courteous, thoughtful and are skilled craftsmen. They gladly took on board any requests we made and answered questions we had during the construction process.  It was very clear that they had a personal commitment to do a thoroughly professional job.
Once the deck was finished, they removed the double windows carefully, allowing us to warehouse them for possible future use, and installed the double French doors and lock work all in the same day to assure that our house would be secure by nightfall.  During this process, Tim's subcontractor electrician, Jim, came to do wiring for outside lighting and switches for same on the inside wall.  It was here that we saw how seamlessly Tim's team and Jim worked together, working around each other and even anticipating what the other needed to do and switching positions to enable each others' work!
Finally, the team worked on finishing the under-deck waterproof storage area. They installed the walls, faced with latticework, added an outward swinging door.  They then installed the gutter and run off spout that will divert any water from the waterproof storage area.    
The entire construction, to include the switch-out of windows for doors and all electrical work, was efficiently accomplished in about two and a half weeks.  We were thoroughly satisfied by the work done and would heartily recommend Northern Deckworks.  It was a flawless and stress-free experience! 

Tim and his crew were very professional every day on the job site. The crew's workmanship were superior and we love the porch, deck and bench! They were timely and always communicated if a decision had to be made on the project and they also cleaned up the job site daily. I would highly recommend them to others!

We were referred to Northern Deckworks by a friend who had a screened porch and deck constructed last winter. We initially had in mind a basic deck construction to replace our small concrete patio off the rear of our house, but our friend's project was so beautiful that we were open minded about building a similar project. We contacted Tim O'Neill, ND's owner, and were able to quickly schedule a walkthrough and estimate from him. He is prompt, professional and thorough. He spent over an hour at our house, seeing and walking the property and asking us good questions about how we wanted to use the new space. It was clear to him that the insects we have in Northern Virginia would limit our use and pleasure in using an open deck, and recommended we consider a screened porch. Tim also had a vision for how to tie our basic and small kitchen patio into a screened porch and deck so that we would have great flow between the two spaces, which are on different house levels due to our lot grade/topography. Tim completed a conceptual design and cost proposal while at our house. In addition to our friend's completed project, we reviewed dozens of photos of some of Tim's other projects and found his work to be at the craftsman-level, truly heads and shoulders above the typical porch or deck contractor. His proposal was detailed and competitive for the quality and type of finish work his crew performs. We made a few adjustments to the scope of the work (primarily the replacement of a sliding glass door with a French door system to better integrate our indoor space into the screened porch.
We initially were scheduled to begin the estimated 7-week project at the end of September 2015, but a rescheduling of another client's project allowed Tim to begin our work 3 weeks earlier than planned. We were blown away by his work crew, led by Juan. Unlike many other contractors, they literally came every work day and performed work...other than a few days with stormy weather that prevented work. We found major progress to occur every day while we were at work, which made getting home to see the project a lot of fun during September and October. Tim did a really good job of communicating with us during the project and kept us on point when we needed to do something, like provide the ceiling fan or outdoor light per our contract. It really was as low stress for us as homeowners as we could imagine.
Our flagstone and stairway projects were led by Luis, who is also a craftsman in his stone design and river stone border installations. This part of the project alone was worth it to us, but it's odd to think about a huge screened porch as the 'cherry on top'. In retrospect, any concerns we had about the screened porch being too large or not architecturally pleasing with our existing house look were put to rest right away as we watched this fantastic structure take shape. It integrates well with our house and yard, just as Tim designed.
The project finished on time, despite an unforeseen delay with the French door delivery from the supplier. We had no snags with county permits or inspections, which Tim coordinated for us. When the project concluded, we had an extremely short punch list of repairs that Tim remedied immediately. It was so short because Tim had performed his own QA inspection earlier that week an already had his crew making corrections. I've never had a contractor pay such close attention to detail.
We could not be happier with our porch, patio and stairway. It exceeded our expectations, not just for the quality and beauty of the work but with how smooth the construction went for us. We have already had a party and received countless compliments from our friends. We've also referred several people to Northern Deckworks, and do so with no hesitation.

After several estimates we were convinced Northern Deckworks was the company to go with. They were as price competitive as the others but Tim O'Neal's artistic vision and the quality of materials was far superior. Tim was a delight to work and really saw how the porch would be the most astheticly pleasing, which was so important to me. I was even more pleased when the work crew arrived, they were everything you could want, timely, polite, hard working and did excellent quality work. They're work always passed inspection. This job exceeded my expectations. I couldn't ask for more.

Northern Deckworks was fantastic. Tim O'Neil worked with us to design the porch of our dreams. Just before work was scheduled to begin, my wife decided she wanted the planned porch to be built 18 feet west. Tim quickly drew up new plans and accommodated her wishes. His workers carefully removed our aging porch, including the unexpectedly challenging section where it had attached to our house. Northern Deckworks quickly and professionally constructed the new porch, taking care not to damage the new cedar flooring as they completed construction. They gave us various lighting options, and their electrician installed our own additional lighting at a low cost. It looks great. Finally, when Northern Deckworks was installing our new double-pane insulated door, the workers decided it did not meet their high-quality specifications, so the company is replacing it at no cost. We didn't detect any flaws in the door, but they did.







Bottom line: Northern Deckworks delivered a great product at cost and on time. Based on the quality of their craftsmanship, the professionalism of their workers, and Tim's ultimate design flexibility, we highly recommend Northern Deckworks.

Tim designed the project based on my vague description of how I wanted the finished project to look/feel.  He addressed design issues with the existing house and provided excellent advice when asked about adding/subtracting elements to the project and what materials should be used/not used.  The difference between our initial meeting with Tim and our initial meetings with the other contractors who bid on this project was immense.  We had an immediate comfort level with him that we did not have with the others.  

The project began when it was estimated to begin, and lasted for the time expected.  The construction crew was respectful, knowledgeable, dependable and genuinely nice guys.  They cleaned up the construction site daily and did a very good job of cleaning up the debris at the end of the job.  Tim delivered on what he promised and the finished product is a work of art.  The quality of the lumber and other materials promised/used in our construction was outstanding.  We couldn't be happier with our porch and decks.

The company built us a beautiful deck and Sunporch.  The Screened in porch is amazing with the cedar and hip roof.  The owner worked with us to make sure we had a design we would be happy with.  We are so happy we hired this company.  The crew of men showed incredible workmanship and eye for detail. They were very hard workers even in 100 degree weather.  It was refreshing to have full confidence in a contractor to do the job right. We highly recommend!

We contacted several Construction companies and Deck builders on Angie's List and each provided cost estimates and some also provided basic drawings.  We decided on Northern Deckworks because the owner (Tim) came to our home and set down with us and discussed our requirements (I am handicapped) and what we were trying to do with our whole yard (not just the deck).  We already had a composite deck and we wanted to extend it and build the Hot Tub on to the deck so I could get in and out of the Hot Tub without going downstairs.  Tim explained to us that where we wanted to put the Hot Tub on the deck could work but due to the nature of our yard (large hill with a large amount of water run off) the amount of structure and additional landscaping required to move the water run off from under the deck would be very expensive and would take away from the natural beauty of our yard.  After talking with Tim at our home and him walking the property several times he provided a new deck design that wrapped around our sun room on to the side of our house with a Hot Tub pad and a privacy fence.  He made several drawings and changes to the design to meet our requirements (additional LED lights and Hand Rails) without any complaining.  The Northern Deckworks carpenters were excellent and very experienced.  They did an outstanding job building the deck and privacy fence that matched the existing siding on our home.  They worked very hard and long hours to get the job completed on time and Tim coordinated with the Hot Tub provider and electrician to have the Hot Tub installed as the deck was completed.  We really had a good experience and I would highly recommend Northern Deckworks.  I would not hesitate to use them again.        

We met with several highly-rated deck/porch contractors for this project.  Tim is very personable and passionate about building beautiful, solid porches.  We really appreciated his commitment to using good materials and excellent building practices (he doesn't just crank out porch after porch like some other big outfits). The work was not cheap but I think his price is very competitive given the high end materials and the amount of manpower it takes to build these porches. 



Design wise, Tim likes to use a lot of wood and we preferred a mix of wood and white as well as keeping our exposed brick.  He was willing to work with us on our design and the unique request of putting the porch off the side of the house (rather than in back).  The end result is gorgeous, functional, and looks like it was always a part of our home.



The crew was friendly and professional, very hardworking.  Once the work began it took about 4 weeks to complete.  There were a few delays due to weather and waiting on the door.  Everything went very smoothly. 

Tim designed the project to reflect exactly what we wanted
to build.  He had a two-man team that worked diligently to complete the project.  Their work was highly professional and they cleaned up after each days work.  The result was a beautiful project reflecting real craftsmanship.  The floor is made of mahogany boards, and the feel of the porch extended our home to the outdoors.  We had a 20x20 deck that was removed to build the porch.  As much as we thought we were going to enjoy the original deck, the insects always interfered.  The porch extends our home and best of all, no insects.  We?re out there frequently and seem to relax just going into it.  We love the project and so does everyone who sees it.  This is definitively a company you can count on for design, and
professional installation.  Finally, we highly recommend using the wood treatment that Tim
suggests.  This is a process that truly enhances the overall look and finish of the wood.  The project is beautiful and this puts
it over the top.

Excellent, they were higher priced than competitors, but their quality is unmatched.  My porch is a show piece, a real room that is a quality extension of my home (much, much more than just a covered room outside.
