I have been dreading the hassle of selling my SUV. A friend of a friend raved about the CARMAX buying service. No strings attached. If you don't like their offer, you walk away. You drive in with registration and title. In less than 30 minutes one of their appraisers checks out the car and gives a written quote, good for 7 days. They explain the appraisal in detail. You decide.
As the offer was $500 more than I was planning of selling the car for myself - based on the Kelly Blue Book Price - I sold the car.
As buying a use car from them is apparently as hassle-free, I'm going back someday to buy a car.

CarMax is a great place to buy a used vehicle. As far as I can tell, the warranty is unmatched - where else can you go where you can return the vehicle within five days? There was also a comprehensive warranty for 30 days, giving me plenty of time to take the
vehicle to my mechanic to be sure it had no hidden problems.
I like the fact you can shop CarMax online and find the vehicle you are looking for, and have it transferred. They have computer
stations there for the customer to shop online if they need help. I found the exact vehicle I was looking for at 2AM and filled
in the form asking for it to be transferred to Fredericksburg. I was called the very next morning to verify the request. It was
a day or two and I was called to come in to look it over and drive it. It was fine, I went forward with the purchase and it was
the easiest way I have ever bought a car or SUV.
Two things customers should know about CarMax. First and most importantly, do your homework, research the vehicles you
are interested in, CarMax employees are nice and very cordial but do not have much product knowledge about all the brands
that sit on the lot. It's smart to know what you want and what you want to pay for it, there is no negotiating. CarMax does
not sell you a vehicle, you buy a vehicle from them. It's not their fault if you pick an unreliable vehicle or one your insurance
company doesn't want to insure. The complaints I've heard about CarMax seem always to be about the vehicle, and we wonder
who is at fault if the vehicle chosen by the buyer has problems? Not CarMax. Secondly, and I don't know if this has changed
since I bought my Toyota, you must pay for the vehicle when you decide on it, either with their financing, cash, or pre-arranged
financing (like a credit union check). They do not hold vehicles with deposits while you arrange financing. If you want to switch
financing to your bank or credit union, you just bring in the check/draft and they cancel the loan in place from their sources.
I did this with no problems, the rate at my credit union was much better than their financing.
I have had my Toyota FJ Cruiser since 2009 and never regretted the purchase for a moment. I will definitely go back to
CarMax when I'm shopping for a nice late-model vehicle again. They are a pleasure to deal with, and they even send you
the pictures of your vehicle that were online and a thank you note.
