The only truly unwelcome surprise came after the measurement; the estimate was more than a hundred square feet greater than the area to be carpeted. I asked why, and was told that they had to buy it in 12' or 15' lengths. Given the layout of my floorplan, that would result in a lot of wasted carpet. I was fairly unhappy, and they offered to refund my deposit, but I eventually stuck with them.
A week or so before the carpet was to be installed, I found water seeping up through my basement floor. That led to a several-month odyssey in finding a waterproofer, getting it waterproofed, then repairing the drywall. Carpetland was very patient, calling a few times to inquire, but otherwise waiting until I was ready to go.
I finally finished the drywall repair in late January, and I called to schedule installation. The night before, I called to note that the installers would need to use liquid adhesive, not nails; the waterproofing warranty would be void if they breached the floor. The dispatcher said that wouldn't be a problem.
Unfortunately, when the installers arrived, they hadn't gotten that message. It took a few hours for them to get liquid adhesive from Home Depot (which is odd, because there's one about five minutes away). But once they had it, they laid down the tack strips, then left so that the glue could dry overnight.
The installers arrived the next day and laid the pad and carpet. They did a wonderful job, with no visible seams. Unfortunately, in redoing the drywall, I had expanded a stair landing somewhat, and they said there wasn't enough carpet to cover that area. I don't think it's not their fault, but my father (a contractor himself before he retired) was critical. I'll be doing that landing myself, with some leftover carpet I had from another job; I didn't think to ask the installers to do that.
