"Let it be known that this patient was fit with a TEMPORARY prosthetic to allow for healing post surgery, and has not returned for definitive care. I have an obligation to my patients to review and inform them of their dental needs and every possible way to treat those needs. I practice every day with my patients dental health being my number one priority. In our office we practice patient centered needs based care."
In addition to the routine dental care, Dr. Grosso has replaced an old crown that broke off, replaced an old filling and several other procedures that I've since forgotten. His office always bills insurance first, and doesn't send you a statement or bill for the balance until they have received payment so you know what you actually owe. On one occasion, they suspected I might get an insurance denial for a crown repair (or something like that...I don't remember the details) and said they would file an appeal if that happened. They told me what the cost would be worst case if insurance didn't pay anything. It ended up not being denied so this was a non-issue, but I appreciated the up front communication. His office is very casual and comfortable and if you're in a hurry you might get a little put off by the laid back atmosphere, but I find it very pleasant. Who knew you could actually enjoy going to the dentist? I only remember one occasion when I had to wait a little longer than my appointment time than what seems typical for any office appointment. Although his office is in an old and not so updated building, the office is clean and neat. Parking is not an issue, although timing to get to and through 7 Corners (East Falls Church) can be at rush hour. If I ever move out of the area, I know I'll be hard pressed to find a dentist who meets his very high standards.
2 weeks later - I picked my son up. We had been talking about our teeth and what to expect when we got there. I arrived at the office. It was in a non-descript office building near that awful intersection by HomeDepot, Target, Eden's Corner so it took a couple of loops to get there. We get to the office, and it's small. The lady I had been chatting with was there. She said hi to my son and gave me an iPad to fil in my paperwork and made it seem like that was a big deal that it wasn't on a paper form. If it wasn't a big deal, I should have been able to fil this in at home online beforehand. She said that they never received my records...please note that in the preceding two weeks, she never called me. They had us wait about 20 minutes after finishing the paperwork...have you ever had to keep a toddler entertained in a dentist's office with no windows in the waiting room for 20 minutes? Several people stopped by and said hi to my son...like they rarely saw a kid. Really it was like that. I offered the lady my insurance card and she took it - finally, but I had to ask her. Then she drops the bomb and tells me that they don't submit for billing. That I have to do that. What?!!! Seriously? They accept my insurance; they are in network. Just then, I get called in. And what the heck, I go in. I sit down...so apprehensive about what I just heard and my son is bouncing off the walls because no one has "counted his teeth" yet. They sit us down in a cramped room with lots of modern equipement. They ask for my records and are told there aren't any. I said that they are coming. All they wanted to know was if they could use their in-room xray machine. That if it's been less than a year, they can't do it. I said I don't know and fish out the business card to my last dentist and said to just go call them. They decide to just do bitewings and they seem perturbed by this. They do take my son out of the room for that. Then I'm asked to hold my son as there is no where for him to sit at first. We start with the cleaning..it was awful. She was really rough and kept telling me how pretty my teeth were (they aren't) and then the other folks are plying my son with little toys so they don't notice the blood - yes lots of blood - in my mouth. He's freaked out. They finally bring him his own chair. The dentist comes in...sort of chides me for not sending over my records and not having full xrays. I have to ask him when they are going to look at my son's teeth. He then tells my son to open his mouth...he peeks in and says...you are good. Then he gives him a toothbrush and a pink sandtimer. My son now has every little toy in their closet and says that you need to brush for 2 minutes a day. That's it.
Then the billing. I got the bill directly because she never submitted to my insurance. I downloaded the form from my provider and it requires you to have all their medical codes. I left a few messsages, and never heard back. Finally after a few months, the receptionist called back and asked about the bill. I said that I needed the medical codes to fill in the paperwork to my insurance company. She asked why I was doing that as she does that. So I gave her my insurance info and then in 1 min, she managed the bill for me. Seriously, this is the same lady. All in all. I think this is just poor management of the office. I didn't write a review at first because I thought I would let this simmer a bit. Then she called again to remind me to book my cleaning. My husband found a great dentist - 1 mile away - I asked her to transfer my records. She emailed me my bitewings in 1 minute, no record. I asked if she ever got my old records, she said no. I just called my old dentist and asked them to send it directly to my new dentist directly.
"I am disappointed that we were not able to help this family in a manner satisfactory to them. We see patients every single day with no previous dental records. The idea that we would not see a patient without previous records is just FALSE. I require staff to take the minimal number of X-rays necessary to assure patients of their dental health. The ONLY reason we like to have previous dental records is to minimize what X-rays we need to take. The policy in our office, is to help every single patient to the best of our ability with their dental insurance. Our office submits insurance for billing on a daily basis. Our policy for treating the dozens of children in our office is...for the parents to bring their babies to their dental cleanings from the very beginning. A child could then come to the dentist several times before they are four to five years old when they will need their first dental cleaning. This way the child will be comfortable in the dental office prior to needing dental care. Until the age of four or five we will; talk with the child about home care, count their teeth, and give them a ride in the dental chair...all positive things that will help the child to be comfortable in the dental office, and certainly for no charge."
It's a very small practice but he is very professional. He is very friendly and he knows what he is doing so you know what you are getting. If you have any questions, you see him and there is no other dentist. He explains everything he is doing and why. He gets a mirror and show you that this is why it needs to be and what happens. We can wait on this one or can't wait on this one. He is great. They are not on the internet network but they bill everything through the internet. They know what they are doing with that and straighten it out. I never had any problems with their billing.
Update 12/10/2014: it has now been almost 2 years since this dentist worked on my tooth. Some days the pain is very bad. I still have to wear a "bite guard" retainer at night to prevent severe pain in the mornings. I have several crowns in my mouth and many natural teeth. I can bite down h****** any one of them and feel no pain at all. However on the tooth in question, the slightest pressure is noticeable. Dr. Grosso's comment, "With the multitude of issues going on it was not conclusive that it was the new crown that was the problem," is nonsense. Any time you do a root canal, crown prep, and crown, there are "multiple issues going on." That is why you go to a dentist rather than a plumber. Both the endodontist and periodontist concluded that root canal was not the cause or source of the pain, so that leaves only the crown and crown preparation as the possible cause. Dr. Grosso was not able to fix the problem after 4 months and multiple return visits. In fact, as indicated by his comment, he denies responsibility for the problem altogether. My advice is to avoid this dentist.
"With the multitude of issues going on it was not conclusive that it was the new crown that was the problem."
