For approximately, six months, a portion of my yard was extremely wet. In a heavy rain, it actually flowed like a stream. Drainage & Erosion Solutions, LLC was one of three companies I contacted concerning the issue. After speaking with and receiving estimates from two other companies, I was still not comfortable. While the most expensive estimate was from Drainage & Erosion Solutions, LLC they also had the most knowledgeable representative, Mr. Len Blakely. Because of Mr. Blakely's professionalism, I chose to go with this company. Mr. Blakely with his extensive knowledge of erosion issues, insisted that I look further for the source of the water. He was the only representative who tried to determine the source and not just move it across my yard. Any of the companies could have built a french drain. However, they did not have the experience or training to evaluate the problem, but could only address the shorted-sighted issue of the wet yard. Furthermore, Drainage & Erosion Solutions was the only company that provided an in depth-written report of needed materials and a diagram of the proposed work. I was fortunate that the water was from my neighbor's broken main water line. Now that they have repaired their water line, my yard is dry. However, should I have an issue of this type again, I will definitely call Drainage & Erosion Solutions.
Description of Work: This company only provided an estimate. This was money well spent.

I dealt with David who was very nice. He did the estimate and also the job supervision and all the back & forth communication. At first the price seemed high and I ended up paring down the scope of work slightly. Once I saw just how much labor was involved and that the crew did very quick, careful and professional work, the price was well justified. If there was a fast drying waterproof coating they could have done it in 1 day but they had to let it dry. David ended up including a few things at no additional cost (2 of the 51 feet) and the topsoil which I didn't ask to be free but was definitely nice. The final grading was very nicely done. I didn't see what they used but the swale and grading work was excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again for any kind of grading or drainage work. I re-contacted the company in late July 2012 for the following:The dryer vent for my house was low to the ground (when D&ES did their work) and the way they had to regrade the area, ended up being lower than the final grade. Separately, I had the vent raised well above grade then contacted David to have the plastic and waterproofing patched around the old vent location as if the vent wasn't there when they did their work. He came with one of his crew, patched the area and put back the dirt. David did this complementary which I didn't expect at all. He asked in exchange maybe some nice words on their work. I was planning to submit an AngiesList review but this definitely motivated me to do one. Overall this was a nice company who did good work and I'd hire them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: (work as done in May 2012, last contact July 2012) They excavated the dirt around 51 feet of my basement down about 6 feet to the bottom of the foundation by hand. Patched all cracks & holes in outer basement wall, applied a tar-like waterproofing substance to wall then a layer of heavy plastic sheet which angled away from the house at the bottom. Backfilled to about 3 feet from final grade, applied another plastic sheet angled away from the house, then backfilled and regraded the dirt away from the house. This included ~7 cubic ft of topsoil to amend the clay soil in area. They created a 50 foot swale to take water running down my yard and away from the house. They buried 2 downspouts using PVC piping and took them about 20 feet down grade to pop ups.

FANTASTIC! This company was great and will use them again if I ever need any services the offer done. David was great when he came out to give me an estimate. He was willing to work with me to find something in my budget that would work. His scheduling was prompt. He always quickly returned my calls, request for an estimate, and email. They performed the work and now my driveway looks so much better. I am so happy. I'm just sorry I didn't use them sooner!

It is necessary to oversee the work that is being done as it progresses, at least daily and more often if possible. Ask questions and clarify the details of any diagrams presented for the work to be done. In the work described here, the diagram in some parts was followed to a tee and in other parts was not . The person providing the estimate and diagram is not the person overseeing the work team and communication about or interpretation of the diagram by the team appeared to be imperfect . Some work in progress was noted to be incorrectly done by the property owner and needed to be dis-assembled and redone as it progressed. On the other hand, an effort was made by the team to respond to the wishes of the owner and to do the desired work, even if that meant redirecting work in progress. Overall, a very satisfactory experience.
Description of Work: Problem of erosion (several large sinkholes) in small backyard of house on a sloping hillside with steep ravine to stream below at the edge of the backyard. Put in retaining walls around back yard, leveled back yard and packed soil with other ingredients to keep down erosion, laid new sod; leveled area of existing brick patio (which had collapsed) with replacement of former bricks; created stairway from front to backyard. The team took a little longer than expected, but started on time and adjusted work in progress as needed to accomodate conditions as they progressed - followed through on all promised work and stayed in budget. Excellent result. I would definitely recommend this company to others and I would use their services again in the future. The work done in this case was costly, but in line with other estimates that I obtained before signing this contract.

The owner showed up on time for the estimate, gave us a start date and had his crew there . They dug out by hand one side of the house to the bottom of the foundation. They sealed all cracks, filled in a gaping hole where the chimney had separated from the foundation and laid new PVC piping attached to the down spouts and sump pump. They applied a tar like substance to the whole foundation. and then refilled the 20 x 8 ft hole. They worked through the 110 degree days and finished as scheduled. All work was explained up front. They put down tarps for the soil taken out and they put the yard back the way they found it. No debris was left behind. Very professional and hard working crew.

As noted on their site (and in many reviews), this company charges $150 to provide an estimate, which I was fine with given that I understood that a drainage expert (one of the company owners) would come and evaluate my property. Instead, a salesman was dispatched to the property to meet with me. He was very friendly and seemed to have been doing this for several years, but he identified himself as a salesman only and indicated that it was really the two owners of the company who had the expertise. The estimate I received was very detailed and well-done, but it was also well over $20,000 (after a "discount"). I later had three other drainage companies from Angies List out to provide estimates for the same work, and they ranged from $4-8k. One actually laughed when I showed him the DES quote. Needless to say, I went with someone else, and frankly, I'd like my $150 back!

This consulting call was run by Drainage Consultant Dave Robey (He has been with DES for 8 years and now is a manager) This was his response as he presented it to me- "He was mine. I gave him 2 bids. The first was a compilation of everything he wanted addressed as he showed me during the walk around. I broke everything separately that we discussed. I told him when I gave him the list that he may want to prioritize and pick out the most important things he wanted done and choose not to do others. For that reason I didn't even total it. He picked out what he wanted bids for and I sent him a proposal for $4310.00 for those items. I don't know where they got the idea that one of the owners was coming out but it wasn't from me. I always explain myself as an employee that is "not" an Engineer but as having many years of experience with this type of work. The comment about me saying I was only a salesman and the owners have the expertise. That's fantasy, I would never say anything like that. I always present myself as an expert. This report looks like it was written by his wife I never saw her. I met with the husband. Also this call was run in January. The report they turned in was in June. I have the original list and 4310.00 proposal attached so you can see what I actually gave him."

As outlined on our website, we operate our company differently than other contractors. We first send a drainage specialist, sometimes a licensed professional engineer, to diagnose the problem and design a solution. For this service, we charge $150. However, we credit this same amount back to the client should they choose to use us to perform the installation. Other companies tend to send salesmen that try to sell you on their system. We would rather solve the problem by using whatever system is appropriate for the situation at hand. The rating of an "F" for simply operating our business as a design/build company is unwarranted and this report should be removed or at least amended.

The job took four days. Although the price was high it was fair considering the amount of work involved and the brilliant quality of the result. All work was carefully executed. All crew members seemed to be quite experienced. They worked efficiently and always with care for our garden; all the men were unfailingly polite. They worked very h****** this project that required tremendous physical effort. The cleanup was thorough: not a trace of debris remained. The crew chief, Rito, was very professional, and always responsive to our questions and requests.
Description of Work: To address the problem of basement flooding, the company dug a trench to completely expose the foundation around part of the front of the house and around the corner past the chimney. The crew cleaned the surface to identify cracks and holes, then sealed the flaws with hydrolic cement. Then they coated the entire surface with a water proof paint, added a heavy gauge plastic liner to the trench, then refilled the trench, using a tamping machine to compact the dirt after each addition. Once filled, the crew banked the area away from the house to further discourage water problems. They cut down an evergreen tree that was too close to the house. The second phase was to recontour the yard to redirect rain water away from the house. Several swales were fashioned. The culvert along our street was deepened to handle more rain water run off. New drain pipes were installed in several areas. All dug up lawn areas were covered with new sod. Plants were replanted where they had been removed. Garden beds were mulched.

Overall, it went fine. I guess for $50 one shouldn't expect much, and unfortunately, I didn't feel like I got much out of the appointment, but as I wrote earlier, it was just a matter of me not understanding their expertise versus my needs.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's List deal for a " Basement Waterproofing Interior/Exterior Inspection & Analysis." Even though they had many customers to schedule for this deal they came out within a matter of weeks. It was not really any fault of theirs, but the services they provide (inspecting the foundation for water intrusion) did not match up with the water issue I was looking to have checked out (either water coming in from above grade or a leaking pipe inside the house.) They did use their moisture detectors to identify locations where water was in two pillars. Their best guess was that a radiator pipe was leaking (although this did not appear to be the case after hiring another contractor to open up the basement ceiling and look for evidence of a leaking pipe).

Description of Work: We have a storm drain culvert under a path that leads to our septic field which for years has gotten clogged up with leaves and twigs. We have had several contractors try to solve the problem over the years, but nothing worked. We finally called Drainage & Erosion Solutions to assess the problem. They responded immediately, set up an appointment for recommending a solution. and fixed a time to do the work. The culvert had separated in the middle and was too small to begin with. They replaced the culvert with a larger size and since we have irrigation in that area, they hand-dug the thirty feet or so to a depth of about four feet. The crew was extremely professional and worked very hard. The area was kept unbelievably clean -- they put all the dirt on a tarp so the grass was barely disturbed. They sodded the ditch when they were finished. Dave Robey came out at the end of the project to make sure everything was done to our satisfaction. We wish we had found this company years ago. Yes, we would definitely use them again and would very highly recommend them!

Dave, the Project Manager, called me about 7:10AM the morning of the job to let me know they'd start about 8:30AM. The job took all day (8:45-6:00) and was done by hand--shovels and picks only. I walked the job over with Dave and Juan, the Project Foreman, deciding to raise the window well cans at Dave's suggestion (only $33 more). We agreed which low spots in my yard the crew could place the extra dirt fill that would be removed. Six workers started the first hour and 3-4 remained all day. Ground to be dug was marked with spray paint, existing sod was rolled up, and digging began, with dirt carefully placed on a long roll of garden weed barrier/fabric extending the length of the job. The crew found an existing buried drain pipe as they were digging the hole for the main catch basin, but because they dug carefully and deliberately, it was not damaged, and they worked around it; to me, this epitomized the entire day-- a careful crew, performing professionally. Workers politely requested to use an electrical outlet early on, and my water hose at the end of the job to thoroughly soak the replaced sod (and grass seed/straw on the raised areas). The job area was cleaned up well. Payment was 1/2 up front, with no extra charge for using a credit card. The only minor issue that occurred was one of the crew breaking the plastic handle on my hose reel, after I cautioned that it needed to be used carefully. But Dave politely "made things right" and subtracted the $33 for the window well can extensions, which by my estimate would cover replacing the hose reel with a similar type. This company and its workers are trustworthy, friendly, prompt, clean, quiet, professional, and great at keeping the customer informed and happy. I rate them highest of any contractors I've worked with, in any field, in my 11 years living in Northern Virginia.
Description of Work: Two 9" water catch basins installed in yard low spots, two existing downspouts tied into buried ADS drain pipe, and run about 100 feet to a pop-up water discharge in a low spot away from the house. Two metal window well can extensions (raising height) added on existing cans, and leftover dirt fill from drainage job used to raise area next to window wells and slope away from house.
They did a great job. Water from behind three houses that are uphall from us flowed like a river during heavy rain and was filling up our window wells. This water would then leak into the basement. They installed one 6" pipe from a catch drain to a pop up by the road and had all the gutters and the sump pump dump into 6" drain too. A great job done by all. We've had several hard rains and the water doesn't collect at all any longer. Highly recommend!!
Description of Work: Drainage & Erosion Solutions LLC installed a drainage system taking all water away from the house from all gutters to a 6" pop up near the street and they installed a decorative stone wall, in front of the flower bed and mulched.

This was a very difficult and challenging job and it turned out great. I chose the company off of Angie's List and was immediately impressed with Ken's credentials and experience. This wasn't just a standard concrete job. I needed someone who knew the complications associated with water, soil and erosion. I was fearing an astronomical cost for the job and found their estimate very reasonable. Carol communicated often with us providing updates on when the material would arrive and the job would start. So there were no surprises and the job started exactly on the date and time that was set. Unfortunately, it rained for three days after the first day causing complications with the placement of the pipe (we have a swift stream that quickly rises up when it rains) and delaying the completion a couple of days. However, I was extremely impressed that despite these delays that were beyond their control and consequential additional unplanned cost to the company, the on-site supervisor, Ken, ensured a quality job was completed. The end result was better than we imagined.
Description of Work: We had the corrogated metal drainage pipe under our driveway replaced. The pipe was four feet in diameter and ten feet long buried two feet under the driveway and between to custom built stone walls.

Now that the repair is completed, we can see why they are rated A/A+. DES did a great job and accomplished all they indicated in their proposal of work and then some. We were impressed with their professionalism, responsiveness/dependability, hard work and the quality of work achieved, attributed to Dave as the Project Lead, to his crew supervisor, and the work crew itself. Money was well spent including a nice 15% discount up front. They also did a fantastic job replacing and tamping all soil in and placing new grass sod in, replacing all walkway stones lawn looks new and better than it did before the work was performed. As they advised, I went and accomplished a walkthrough inspection with the crew supervisor and had the opportunity to check and ensure all was normal to include all sprinkler system heads being relocated into their original positions in that section of the yard. I recommend DES to any homeowner who has a leakage problem, wet basement and is looking for honest, dependable service and top-quality results!
Description of Work: After an extensive review of A rated companies on Angies List who performed basement waterproofing and many reviews of previous homeowners experiences with several companies in the area using Angies List, I chose Drainage and Erosion Solutions (DES) , LLC of Reston VA. DES stood out as the leader of the pack, best company out there from my online reviews. I contacted DES in early January 2012 and Dave Robey one of their project managers, promptly called back /emailed. I subsequently arranged for him to visit the house to do a pre-work assessment on a Sunday, 15 Jan 12. Dave arrived right on time as scheduled and spent a good 2 hours that afternoon inspecting the sources of the leakage in the basement and providing us with several options which he outlined in good detail to fix the problem. He also inspected the inside base perimeter of the basement and the outside, primarily the right and left rear/sides of the house. He used two special hi-tech detection devises to determine sources of the moisture had seeped in and after discussions, recommended a course of action to repair the leakage. Dave recommend an affordable, yet effective option to resolve the leakage given our situation. The crew arrived to accomplish the work on 30 and 31 January 12 as scheduled. They promptly went to work and excavated the right side of the house where the large basement foundation crack, main source of leak was located,, going 6 feet to the left and to the right of the the 8 foot ling verticle foundation crack, and repaired it using a special flexible heated sealant injected in and aprotective drainboard and outer sealant. They re-established the perimeter drain along the base of foundation on that side. They redirected sump drain pipe away from the house 90 degrees toward the drainage swale on that side and also excavated 10 feet at the left and right of the right rear corner of the house installing a plastic liner system that went out 3 ft from the home foundation to flow water away from the home foundation. After all thy sealant/repair was accomplished, they put all the soil back in on day two and tamped very tightly away from the house at a nice angle to ensure efficient away from the home foundation, then installed very nice grass sod, tamping it down; essentially putting in a nice new lawn on the the repair side of the yard. Their clean-up was excellent and it looked like no one had even broken soil, incredible work, well done, all accomplished in two complete days.

Every aspect of this contract was done to perfection! My sister who lives nearby has now contracted for them to do similar work on her basement.
Description of Work: Mark Lane came out within a week when called after the day last fall with we were clobbered 11" of rain in 24 hours. His deputy David Arias provided a clear and thorough contract. My basement wall (56 y.o. home) had been leaking over the last few years and no amount of superficial plastic parging or adding of large gravel by me to deflect rainwater was successful. David supervised an excellent crew who dug down 8 feet to the foundation and discovered many cracks and holes (some the size of a fist,). Many areas were never parged, a reflection of the code in Arlington in the early 50's. After sealing with hydraulic cement, tar and then plastic sheeting, the dirt and pea gravel, which had been carefully stored nearby, was carefully replaced and graded. A disintegrating brick basement window well was replaced with a new aluminum enclosure. Not a drop of water has entered during the heavy rains over the last month. I wish had known about this fine firm years ago. Drainage & Erosion Solutions also installed a small "dry river bed" in my back yard where removal of an enormous oak tree last year had caused some erosion that could not be mitigated with either mulch or gravel. They ran it so that it does not distract from the landscaping view from the house.

After the storms in September 2011 we discovered water in our basement. The house is some 30 years old but we had not experienced water inbtrusion before. The damage was minor and involved only about 15 feet of the basement wall, and 2-3 feet of carpet. But, we wanted to determine what caused the leak and avoid future recurrences. The damage was not covered by either our homeowner’s or flood insurance, so cost was a factor. While doing the initial research on Angie’s list I got the feeling from the customer comments that Drainage and Erosion Solutions was the kind of professional and reputable firm that we prefer to do business with. Drainage and Erosion Solutions was also the top rated company in our area, so the decision was an easy one. Of approximately 30 or so companies, Drainage and Erosion Solutions was the highest rated firm on Angie’s list in the nearby area, with great customer reviews, and now we can understand even better why that was so. From the very first phone call I knew that we had chosen the right company. Dave Robey--the firm's engineer and estimator went out of his way to schedule the first appointment the day after I called. His assessment was thorough, straightforward, and he provided a cost effective proposal to mitigate our water intrusion problem. Evan, the on-sight manager, helped educate us on the nature of the work in progress and he stayed on top of everything. The on-site crew was personable, efficient, and gave us the feeling that they knew exactly what they were doing. The work was completed a day ahead of schedule and on budget. The crew left everything clean and tidy. We were always treated as a valued customer. We would recommend Drainage and Erosion Solutions to anyone needing the types of services offered.
Description of Work: Excavated down to the footer of a basement wall, patched the exterior wall and applied waterproofing sealant. Installed a plastic liner system on the exterior of one basement wall and also regraded around the entire house perimeter to promote water runoff away from the foundation. Reset six downspout/drain pipes and installed two pop-up drains. Stabilized and regraded an air conditioner pad.

Contact made with the company to request assessment and estimate to correct leaks into basement. Company called back the same day and we set up an appointment date/time two weeks out. The company employee showed up at exactly the time set. We described the damp basement problems and showed him the problem areas. He then inspected the inside and outside basement walls and pointed out to us that to resolve our problem would not take major repairs, -- mostly caulking and brick pointing - something a handyman could do. The employee seemed very knowledgeable, and thorough and best of all, did not try to sell us something we did not need.

Had an excellent experience working with Mark from Drainage and Erosion. Mark's crew actually showed up the day before Tropical Storm Lee came through the DC area and saved me from significant flooding, so I'm very grateful to them. I also appreciate that Mark suggested less drastic measures than I had been planning to deal with drainage issues, which have worked out great so far. It's a great feeling to see water pouring out of the drain pipes at the curb instead of pooling in the yard when it rains. I also like that he uses solid PVC drain pipe instead of the cheap corrugated plastic. Mark's crew did an amazing job in replacing the turf after burying the drainage pipes--it looked like the grass had never been disturbed. Mark also immediately fixed a couple of minor follow-up issues, and he removed a few hundred pounds of non-job related dirt from my yard that I would have had no idea how to get rid of. All in all a great experience.
Description of Work: Install two drywells at the bottom of a large window well; install two point drains in yard; install underground pipe drains to curb tying in all yard drains, roof downspouts and sump pump; remove unrelated dirt and debris from yard.

While the real proof of the effectiveness of their work can only come after a long, heavy downpour, everything they did appears to have been done correctly. In spite of a signficant workload from Hurricane Irene and its aftermath, they performed their work on schedule. They brought an adequate crew to complete the job (both the one in the front of the house and the one in the rear of the house) the same day. I had emphasized that there were lines and cables that did not show on the markings provided by Miss Utility, and I asked them to take care to avoid collateral damage by avoiding those lines. They dug carefully, found unmarked cables, but did not cut them. After the crew departed, we noticed that they had not replaced one shrub in the correct position. We called the project manager on his cell phone, and the crew was immediately sent back to move the shrub.
Description of Work: Drainage and Erosion Solutions dug down a few feet along the front side of the house and nailed a plastic liner to the exterior wall alongside the area they had excavated. As they refilled the area, they tamped down the soil to eliminate spaces in which water may be able to flow down toward the foundation. Then, they replaced any plants that they had to remove, and they graded the area so that water would flow away from the house. They also ran a line from a downspout at the rear of the carport to connect to a line carrying water away from the house to a pop-up drain in the back yard. A line carrying water from the rear of the house, as well as the pop-up drain had been installed by Drainage and Erosion Solutions several years ago. They also patched several small areas of deteriorating concrete at the entrance to the carport.

I contacted Drainage & Erosion in September, in regard to water seepage through the foundation wall in my basement. Mark Lane came out, evaluated the problem and told me what had to be done. It was an exterior foundation problem. After some discussion about the Company's present work load, I made a decision to go ahead and secure his services. He gave me a window of time from the last week in November to the first week in December. I am happy to say that on 12/09/11, Dave, the project manager and a very efficient crew completed the job on my home. I am very happy and relieved that the problem has been solved, work is done and in a very professional and proficient manner. The crew was courteous, they left my property clean and provided quality workmanship and service. I will be using this company again and I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: . Excavated soil from foundation, cleaned walls, sealed all cracks and waterproofed foundation. Compacted soil Regraded the back yard for positive drainage away from my home Installed gravel under bump-out
