When I called Cornerstone, the phone was answered by the owner and not an answering machine. Ed took the time to listen to what I needed even when he was on the job. He provided a few options and we agreed on the next steps. He arrived right on time and scoped out the most efficient way to tackle my job. Ed finished the job in very little time and everything came out great!! Ed is an excavating expert and I highly recommend Cornerstone for your excavating needs!

We had a 40yo in-ground pool that was in poor condition. After years of debating what to do with it, and with the kids having grown and gone, we finally agreed to have it removed along with the deteriorated fence surrounding it. We contacted Ed, the owner and operator of the company, after doing a fair amount of searching, starting with the Virginia DPOR site where we found contractors with the licenses for excavating and pool work. Ed was the first to come out to discuss the project with us and sent a proposal shortly thereafter. We did get other bids, but felt very confident in Ed. He was patient, friendly, and obviously experienced with this type of work. Shortly after reaching an agreement, he had pulled permits with the county. About a day before he was to begin, I rented a submersible pump and drained the pool (an option Ed suggested as we pressed for savings). The next day, Ed came with his dump truck, skidsteer and excavator. He got right to work and by the end of the day, had made amazing progress. The next day, he arrived early and worked all day without any noticeable break. He came back the third day and finished up in the morning. Each day, Ed explained what he was going to be doing and was happy to answer all my questions. The four of us working in our home office were fascinated watching him work, which one described as watching a ballet - he is that skillful with the skidsteer and excavator. His work was excellent, and as a bonus, Ed is one of the nicest and most interesting guys you could hope to meet. I ended up taking a lot of his time talking with him about some of his other interests and hobbies, and even though he had other jobs waiting for him, he never seemed too rushed to answer a question. I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. If only more contractors were like Ed, life would be a lot easier!

Extremely well.  Very professional, courteous, knowledgable, and skillful.  He was clearly the right person for the job.
The swimming pool had become an unwelcome chore quite a few years earlier, and we had been given bad advice about how to dismantle it.  We had ripped out the plastic liner, and fortunately there was sand underneath that.  Then we'd been filling the pool with yard debris, including logs from fallen trees.  It was quite the eyesore, as the concrete deck surrounding it still remained, and it was dangerous to walk on the yard debris inside the pool.
Ed was unfazed when he saw the situation, and knew exactly what to do.  His calm demeanour and skillfulness with the excavator made quick work of our unsightly mess.  And the grass seed he planted was appropriate and without weeds; it's hands down the nicest-looking part of our lawn!  After the project was complete, Ed stayed a while longer to chat with us.  He's very personable, sane, and intelligent.  We recommend him highly.

For reasons we will never understand, a previous homeowner poured a 10-inch thick, rebar reinforced concrete patio in our backyard.  And did I mention it wasn't even remotely level? Needless to say, it had to go.
We had several contractors out to bid on the project, and it soon became evident that it was too big for a general contractor.  So we started looking at excavators.  Ed's bid for the job was several hundred dollars under the closest competitor, probably because he does all the work himself using his own equipment.
Ed came out as scheduled, demolished the monstrous concrete pad, and hauled away all of the debris.  To give you an idea of the scale, it took three trips with his full-sized dump truck to remove it all.  In spite of the scope of the project, he managed to leave a relatively small footprint in the remainder of the yard, making just one track between the street and the removal site. That was a relief because we had a number of plants we didn't want to lose.
We'd highly recommend him to anyone looking to hire an excavator.

Ed's work is top notch.  He knew exactly how to excavate the bamboo efficiently and he carefully redesigned and implemented the storm drainage.  Couldn't ask for better service!

It went very well and Ed was very professional.  He had underestimated the amount of time it would take, but due to existing conditions and unknowns involved in demo'ing a foundation built over 50 years ago it can be expected.  He got in and got the work done very timely.

After removing our old patio, taking down an old tree, having a deck taken off and
having a previous owner put up an above ground pool?.. our back yard was
dangerous to walk across! There were old roots popping up, sand all over, and
worst of all, rain was not draining from our property very well at all!
We had several ?landscaping? companies out and they told us this was out of their
scope of work. Ed came out and said he could take care of it. We felt the price
was reasonable so we set it up.
Watching Ed run that piece of equipment was just amazing. I was so impressed with the precision
of this job. Obviously we had to do some raking after he was done but, I really
don?t think he could have been more precise if that machine was part of his own
body!
After the first hard rain we had one large area that did not drain right away and we
called Ed back. He reminded us that our back yard still has no grass to slow
the run off of the water. He suggested we lightly rake the area and get seed on
it as soon as possible.
It?s so great to be able to walk across my own back yard and not have to watch every
step for fear of falling. We are very grateful to have had this work done and
would recommend Ed.

It went great. Ed communicated with us throughout the process, and worked with us on what day we could do the work.  He was prompt, came in and did the work.  The finished product matched what we wanted.  No complaints!

Mr.Bevis provided us with a proposal quickly after visiting the site. Once we made the decision, he obtained the required county permits without any delays. Work started at noon on Friday, just a couple of hours after obtaining the permit. The equipment used was in excellent condition. Mr. Bevis knew exactly what he was doing, has a lot of experience! He performed all of the demolition and backfilling work. He was careful to minimize damage to the backyard. By the following Wednesday 2:00 pm work was completed, including leveling the yard, delivering high quality topsoil, seeding and mulching the new lawn. Mr. Bevis is very competent and pleasant contractor to work with. The price was excellent.

Excellent work throughout project, highly recommended.  Ed Bevis, Owner, is very professional, someone I was very comfortable performing a major project on my home.  Communicated extremely well, very honest, upfront on expectations.  Ed did the job himself and is an expert handling tractors, backhoes.  He arranged for all permitting requirements, other companies did not want to include this as part of the service.  Total project took five days, all work was performed on time.

Ed came over and gave me a great price. It took him 2 full days to demo the buildings and haul away the material. He is an expert at using a skid steer and excavator, there were some bushes next to the garage and I had planned to move them before Ed came over. I forgot to move them, and after the demo they were still there and unharmed, it is very hard to believe that he was able to drive this heavy equipment so well and was able to control the direction of where the old shed and garage fell. He came with all his own equipment, the skid steer, mini- excavator and large dump truck. He was very professional, he did what we agreed on in the contract there were no extra costs or additions. I would definitely hire him again to do some demo work or excavating.   A straight shooter and professional, this was truly a stress free contractor.
