"Thank you so much. We look forward to working with you on your next project. jackie"
"Thank you so much for your review. We enjoyed working with you on making your bathroom perfect. We look forward to working with you again in the future."
Overall, I'm satisfied with the results. I like the travertine tiles, the vanity cabinet, the new ceiling lights, vent, paint color and scheme. The workers were very good, prompt, and respectful.
There are things I learned from this experience and would consider more carefully if I should do something similar.
1. Large shower space is nice but it could have been bit smaller, or expanded out more toward the toilet instead. The larger footprint cut into the space for the bath which is a lot shorter than what I thought it was going to be. I was told it would be a "full sized soaking tub." Maybe for a child or a short person it is, but not for a man of average height.
2. I was thinking that a half-wall between shower and tub would be nice to create separation, but Jackie thought that was unnecessary. I should have insisted.
3. I should have chosen translucent glass instead of the clear one because the shower feels a bit like you're standing in an aquarium (just my personal observation). It might let in a bit more light, but I had them install more lighting, so that is not an issue. And the clear glass requires a lot of squeegeeing to keep it looking clean
4. The tub design does not allow for placing anything on its edge, e.g, soap dish, shampoo, etc. which means I have to add furniture for that purpose.
5. I had reiterated to them that the shower tile be squared off at the top and not go all the way to the angled ceiling. I did not want the shower to be the focal point of the whole room. But this was not communicated to the tiler who--did a very fine job--of tiling all the way up to the ceiling. When I complained to Teek, he said he could have the tiles removed and redone. I said to leave it alone since it was already done. I was upset because I felt they had not respected my wishes, especially since I made a point of this several times before the tiles went up. In retrospect, I think I was right about it giving too much weight to the shower, but I don't think it would matter to most people or potential buyers.
6. I was also a bit miffed that the inset shelf in the shower wall for soap/shampoo was not placed where we agreed it would be. When I asked Teek about this he said it could not be done because "that is an exterior wall." The bathroom is the corner of an end-unit row house, so both walls are "exterior walls." So instead, I have two smaller shelves on the wall on each side of the water valve. This functions okay, but aesthetically not very pleasing.
7. The vanity cabinet is very well-made with lots of storage. I like the height too--not so much bending. I should have opted for wider drawers which would have been more useful to me than the larger space under the sinks.
8. I did not like the brown striping around the molded/beveled edges of the cabinet. I think it's supposed to add a shadowing effect. I don't really notice this anymore.
9. I should have chosen a different (color pattern) granite surface for the vanity. It's beautiful and works fine, and Jackie said all the colors don't have to match the walls or the tiles, and I agree, but the granite does not tie-in the other colors enough for my taste.
10. The mirrors and vanity lights are my least favorite of the renovation. They are pedestrian and dull, and do nothing to add value to the room. But they are easy to replace and I will likely do so in time.
11. Biggest lesson for me is that a bathroom should be utilitarian first and foremost and not so much a vanity project as I made it into. I would have saved money on it too!
"Thank you for your comments. It's been a pleasure working with you on making your basement perfect for you! We hope to work for you again in the future."
"You were a great customer! Your ideas and finishes were top notch. It was great working with you! Thank you for your review of our work."
This was a once in a lifetime renovation project for me. I have lived in my condo for 14 years. The building was built in 1974 and the unit still had popcorn ceilings, outdated kitchen and bathrooms. We took a wall out to create an open concept between the kitchen and living room. Interviewed several contractors before contracting with J&T. The reason I went with J&T was Jackie Acker the "J". Everyone I interviewed did not give me the type of customer service that Jackie did. She was very cognizant of the fact that I had never done anything like this before and was therefore very patient in the contracting process, design process etc. I am sole caretaker for my 83 year old mom and I work full time so my ability to run around to look at fixtures, lighting etc. was just not there. Jackie did all the leg work and present me with 3-4 options in my budget range when it came time to pick out vanities, fixtures, flooring etc. That was worth the cost to me. Time is money and the fact that she did the running for me was invaluable. I really liked the fact that the workers were employees of J&T and that they did not outsource work. Due to the magnitude of the renovations, we could not live in the unit. I was able to trust them with going in and out of the unit and the condo building as a whole without me being there every single minutes. Technology was also very useful as Jackie would send me pics from her phone asking if a shelf or socket should go here or there and she could keep me apprised of major accomplishments by phone pics which helped me determine when I wanted to go over at certain times during the week and inspect the work. I did not announce myself and just showed up and her team was always working very professionally. Toward the end of the project I appeared one day, and Jackie was there with some other women and they were putting things away in cabinets. I asked them what was happening and Jackie said something that only a woman would say and only a woman would appreciate "...I don't like people coming home to chaos" . Throughout the whole time frame my co-workers were waiting patiently for the contractor horror stories. There were never any to share. This could not have gone better, in fact if I had to do it again, I would and I would do it with J&T.
They estimated 8 weeks. The job was done in 6 with minor punch list work to do when we returned home. The fact that we were not living there made it easier for them to plow through and get it done; however, seeing their work ethic I am sure they would have finished early even if we were living there. It is very helpful that Jackie partners in this business with her husband Teek (the "T" in J&T). He has his own plumbing business and that obviously facilitates the exceptional plumbing work one receives as a J&T customer. I was extremely nervous because we had tubs removed in both bathrooms to create walk in showers. This is very nerve racking in a condo because any leak caused damage to your neighbor below and common areas. The bathroom work was first rate. We had pop corn ceilings peeled flat and painted beautifully. We built out a traditional closet into a walk in for my Mom. We painted the entire unit and Jackie volunteered to move items out of our XMAS storage closet (hallway) to ensure the closet was painted.
You simply will not get this level of customer service elsewhere.
The area in which the construction was to be done was full of "storage" items. Having recently broken my ankle, I was challenged to move the various storage items. J & T stepped up to the task and offered to take all of my stuff to a nearby storage locker I had rented. In addition, I had three huge bookshelves full of books I intended to donate to my local library. Again, J & T took all of the books out of my house and delivered them to the library.
The work crew was wonderful. Very respectful, even knocking on the interior door that leads downstairs before they would enter my second floor.
I also had a medical emergency while the crew was here (allergic reaction to medication). When they became aware of my distress, they helped me to a comfortable position and waited with me until the ambulance arrived to take me to the hospital.
I am particularly thrilled with the bathroom. The tile work is absolutely beautiful. J & T worked with me to
choose the tile and cabinet, and created a lovely bathroom (much nicer then the others in my home).
The crew was completely trustworthy. I had to leave the house several times for DR appointments, and even was hospitalized for a few days. The crew continued with their work, and I never had any concern about them being there alone.
I couldn't recommend a better company. If you have projects that you want done, definitely call J & T design for quality, professional work.
