Interstate did a great job from the beginning. They sent a team out to diagnose the issue with the floor drain that was backing up everytime the washing machine was run. They used a camera system to determine exactly what the problem was and even showed me, using the camera, so that I understood exactly what was going on. They started the repairs within a couple of days. The first day they removed the concrete to access the broken pipe, replaced the pipe section, scheduled the visit from the county inspector for the next day and by the end of the third day they had repaired the concrete and put everything back as if they had not even been there. I would strongly recommend them to anyone.

Interstate did an excellent job for both jobs. They work quickly and neatly. They did trenchless for the water line, which was great. The water line was replaced in 2013 and the sewer line in 2/2017.

They were very professional with the primary work of excavating. The repaired things well but did have problems with the Arlington County inspector, for which they took responsibility. Interstate did everything by the book, getting permits, blocking off the holes with signs, tape and cones. The only problem was the delay for the inspections caused the driveway apron concrete to be delayed, which they did not do for a couple days. With curing, that left us with only half a driveway for around a week. Despite the big holes and concrete, they cleaned up very well, to the point it looked better than before digging. The bush they uprooted survived, but a couple of other plants did not (but they tried).

From start to finish, everything was very professional and the job went smoothly. Even the grass seed they planted grew, now the best part of our lawn!

I got another estimate from a different company. They said the line did not need to be replaced. Instead, they cleaned the line for $350, this saving me about $12,000. They said they did not know how a Interstate Enterprises could have given me an estimate without first checking the pipe with a camera.

Our sewage drain kept getting backed up and found out the pipe leading outside was cracked and had a tree root growing into it. Eric (I think that was his name) from Interstate was very helpful, responsive and walked us through the process. This was a big expense for us and even gave us a discount.
I've already recommended this company to my family in Baltimore for a drain issue they had.

These guys were great!  They promptly came in with the right price, the right equipment and expertise to quickly and cleanly replace the water main to our home.  They showed up when they said they would and completed all the work within a day and a half, which was surprising because of the cold weather and how far our house is from the street.  The team quickly dug down to the site of the leak, and did so in such a way that when they put things back together our grass looked like it did before they started the repair.  They then brought in a machine that bored along the old water main, not disturbing any other parts of our yard or landscaping.  It was an impressive operation to watch.  The work they did inside the house was equally as professional.  The team cleaned up after themselves, and the concrete they removed and then replaced in our foundation has had no issues since the repair.  I would highly recommend that if you find yourself needing to have your water main line replaced that you call these guys.  They were much cheaper than the other companies that provided us an estimate, and they were the only ones that did not propose digging up our whole front yard to replace the line.

The original replacement of the polybutylene pipe went fine.  However, we recently noticed water coming into our basement when it rained and figured out it was coming in around the main water line.  We called Interstate Enterprises.  They were fairly prompt in coming out to inspect the problem (came the next day) and readily agreed that the problem was their responsibility and would fix it free of charge.  They came back the day after that (today) to dig down to the pipe and add more waterproofing.  They also put new concrete around the pipe on the inside, which the person who came out to do the inspection did not mention would happen (I thought the work would only be on the outside).  I don't know yet whether the work will stop the leaking.  I hope it does.
What I'm really upset about (in addition to having the leaking problem at all) is the damage to my landscaping in front of the house.  I spent thousands of dollars on a row of boxwoods and two rows of small azaleas in a staggered arrangement.  They dug up one of the boxwoods and 4 of the azaleas and then dug a trench with a caterpillar bulldozer.  They treated the plants very casually and broke off several branches off the azaleas, leaving them looking very scraggly.  They did not pay attention to how the plants were arranged originally and were about to put them in completely wrong when I came out and intervened.  One of the azaleas was already in the ground and I asked if they had moved it, because it seemed out of position.  They said they had moved only three azaleas.  I don't know if it was a problem with their limited English or they just didn't want do the work to move it.  So, they left it where it was and now it annoys me every time I look at it because it's too close to its neighbor on one side and there's too much space on the other side.

Had a backed up toilet and shower in the basement. Worked with another Angie's List plumbing company to determine cause and try to unblock the line. Once it was determined the sewer line was broken the company was unable to accommodate the work for over a week. Called another Angie's List A+ plumber and was quoted $8600 for replace the line. There was the potential of losing all my landscaping on one side of my house in the front, possible loss on entry sidewalk, and potential to lose a tree as well. All of which would have been my expense to replace. The destruction to my yard would have been extensive with a 6 foot wide and 10 foot deep 80 foot long trench from the house to the street. I was shocked. After a bit of research I called Interstate Engineering for the job They came out the next day to begin work. They have a minimal trenching technology called pipe bursting that only involves a hole at the house and one at the sewer site near the street. Erik was very clear about the procedure and minimal damage to the lawn. Price was just about the same as the traditional trench job so we moved forward. Darwin the foreman and a his crew of 5 showed up at 9am and carefully removed a few shrubs and dug the holes and used the modern method to lay in the new line. They were done at the end of the day and the next day the inspector came and approved the fittings (quote...."perfect job") and the holes were filled in, landscaping replaced, sod replaced, seed laid down, and complete cleanup. Outstanding job. This is the only way to replace sewer or water lines with minimal damage and competitive pricing. Highly recommend.

After having two sewer clogs/backups in less than a year we were advised that we should replace the sewer line.  We got three estimates for the work; two estimates for the pipe-bursting method and one estimate for pipe lining.  After discovering that pipe lining is not approved in Fairfax County without a signing a waiver with the county, we decided that we would only consider the pipe-bursting method.  The two pipe-bursting estimates were within $400 in cost to one another.  Interstate provided a 10 year guarantee vs the other five year guarantee.  Both companies had been responsive to our phone calls and answered all of our questions.
Work was scheduled to commence two days after we contacted Interstate with our final acceptance of the contract.  The gas line people arrived the very next day to mark the gas lines and Interstate employees arrived at 8:30 am on the following day as scheduled.   We had initially been told that the job might take place over two to three days as the crews were busy on other jobs and that they had to make arrangements with the Fairfax County inspector but that we would only be without a sewer connection for a few hours.  As it turned out they were able to complete the job, including the inspection, by 3 pm on the same day.
We had a landscaper remove the bushes and shrubs from the work area and replant them when the work was finished .  This was an additional cost that we arranged.  In the other areas Interstate tamped down all the dirt when they filled in the holes and put down straw and grass seed in the areas that were grass. There was a lot of heavy equipiment all around the yard during the process but when they cleaned-up and finished you couldn't even tell they'd been there except for the straw covered patches.
My only concern during the entire process was that although they had trench safety boxes, which can be used instead of trench shoring, I'm not certain that they were going use them until I mentioned it.  Our dirt was pretty solidly compacted but it was a very deep hole and the trench had straight sides, not slopes, so I was  concerned about a cave-in especially when using the pipe-bursting equipment.  After I mentioned the safety box they immediately inserted one into each of the trenches.
I was pleased with their responsiveness, completion of work and clean-up.

I found puddles in my front yard on Monday morning. Interstate arrived to provide an estimate onsite on Monday afternoon (thanks Eric) two hours after I called them, and started work the next morning. They came in at nearly half of two other estimates--one of which didn't get back to me for two days, by then Interstate was nearly done. They completed the physical replacement work in six hours (you save time not digging a trench) coordinated permits and inspections, and by Thursday you couldn't even tell they'd been there. The workers were very professional and polite. They even put my landscape fabric back in place and covered it with mulch. Our water was only off for a couple hours and passed inspection without a hitch. I would call them again, and you should too---couldn't be happier with the work they did.

Interstate was the first to respond of about 8 companies I contacted Friday night. Many didn't get back to me until Monday or Tuesday.  Interstate turned out to have the best price of 5 bids for drilling and could start right away. Note: one company doing the pull method was cheaper. I preferred drilling given the price gap was only a few hundred.  They were always on time and left the yard in very good shape after it was all done.  The first day was most of the work. Day two was inspection and putting the grass back in.
My house was only about 70 feet from the curb but the water comes into the middle of the house so they had to drill way under the foundation and come up from below.

This whole experience was quite a shock, but I was pleased with Interstate. It didn't help that I later found out most of the cost would have been covered by insurance offered by Dominion Electric (yes, I wondered about that, and delayed looking into it). I interviewed three companies before hiring them. The first essentially didn't know what he was talking about, the second I just didn't feel comfortable about, and they were more expensive. Interstate first said they thought the underground leak was at the curb (most common) at the junction where the home and county water supply meet. That would have been about $1250 to fix. Unfortunately, the leak was closer to the house (I saw that the water was seeping farther up the trench they dug), although because the water line went under my concrete driveway and garage into the utility closet (no basement), it couldn't be located directly. So they had to replace the entire line. I chose copper, which although more expensive, I thought was better in the long run. It's amazing how they do this! They used compressed water to drill a hole from an excavation (about four feet long and 2.5 feet deep) and inserted the new copper pipe into the path made by the water/ this ended exactly in a space about 18 inches square in my utility closet (this also was excavted), then applied concrete to the hole. The only problem was that it took a couple of days for the accumulated and injected water to drain into the trench, and at first I thought they hadn't fixed the problem. They assured me that it was just accumulated water draining, and sure enough, in two days they were able to drain water from the trench. The county inspector examined the work and approved. Then Interstate came back to fill in the trench. They had cut the covering sod and set it aside. This was all during the near 100 degree temps we had last July, so the sod was in pretty bad shape by the time they laid it out again. They cleaned up the entire area and raked the sod, and amazingly within a couple of weeks you could not tell where the excavation had been.
I chose this company partly on the basis of reports I had seen of their work in a couple of Springfield neighborhoods where they had replaced Orangeburg sewer pipes (now THAT is a BIG problem!)

"Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed and comprehensive review. We appreciate your business and am glad that this experience turned out with such a positive outcome considering the difficulty it placed on your household. Repair and replacement of water and sewer lines is always a challenge for every homeowner and winter weather creates its own additional difficulties. We truly appreciate your business."

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!
I called Interstate when I noticed a large amount of water was coming up through a flower bed around a tree in my front yard.  The county had come out and confirmed that the problem was not theirs since the meter was running indicating a problem from the meter to the house.  Interstate sent an estimator named Eric out the same day who told me I needed a new line from the meter to my house.  He seemed sure of this and spent the rest of his time with us telling us how they would do this and selling me on their service.  My mistake was believing him and signing a contract to do the work the next day.  They came out and did install a main line.  In the process the foreman of the crew noticed my sprinkler system was also connected to the main water supply to the house near the meter.  They completed the work and I waited till Monday and the inspector from the county came and approved the installation.  The crew came to fill in the hole and they opened the valve to the sprinkler system.  Water came gushing up in the same place as the original problem!!!!!!!!  It turns our that a broken sprinkler line was responsible for the original problem.  I called Eric and asked why they had not correctly diagnosed the problem to begin with.  He had not asked about whether there was a sprinkler system nor had they pressure tested the line they had unnecessarily replaced!!!   This is not what one should expect of professional service companies.  Clearly they were more interested in the $6000 I paid them than in doing the right thing for customers.  When I asked about at least a partial refund Eric said he would talk to the owner.  He did not get back to me so I called and essentially was told the owner would not refund a penny, that they did the job per the contract.  STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!
Response from

"We have taken considerable time to respond to this review as we have an "A" rating with Angie's List and wanted to be sure of our facts. We received the lead from this customer through Home Advisor Pro, "repair broken water pipe from home to street" with a specific comments that the customer wrote, "I have a broken line between my house and the water main connector on the street". Interstate called and responded immediately to the request that same day (the County had turned off the customer's water) and then performed the work the next day as agreed by and contracted with the customer. After the work was completed, the County inspector passed the work the following day which is a normal timeframe and, when we backfilled the area where work was completed, we noticed water accumulation and brought that fact to the customer's attention. The customer then let us know they had an irrigation system and our crew examined where the water was coming from; they made a determination it was near where the water line work was completed. Without question and with no additional charge to the customer, Interstate repaired that connection immediately while the crew was there. We regret the customer did not advise our company of the existing irrigation system so we could have made a comprehensive examination for them and possibly avoided the additional work. However, considering the information we were provided and the work completed as the customer requested, Interstate completed the work professionally and correctly by County standards then accommodated the customer when an additional problem was detected. We feel this response reflects the quality work we provide to each customer and stand on the many Angie's List reviews substantiating that."
