Heigar Contracting

Gary was the only contractor we called who diagnosed the underlying cause of the kitchen tiles cracking and the disintegrating grout (floor joists had sunk and become uneven causing movement of tiles). His crew removed the existing tiles and too-thin backer-board, and ensured that the subfloor was stable. They fixed the joist problem, then installed new backer-board and tiles, They had to raise the cabinet over the refrigerator and reinstall it (because the correct backer-board was thicker than what had originally been used and the refrigerator wouldn't fit under the original cabinet). They removed, saved, reinstalled, painted and caulked the shoe molding throughout the kitchen (tremendous cost saving to us over putting down new molding). While the project was ongoing I added the task of replacing the door between the kitchen and the garage. They removed the old door, installed the new one (which was slightly larger than the old), drilled my requested peephole and deadbolt, then repaired and painted the entire wall. In fact, every additional request from my husband and I that resulted in unavoidable displacement, removal or damage, Heigar Contracting replaced, reinstalled and repaired everything. Heidi was key in choosing tiles and grout that blended with our existing counters. She suggested that we have our thresholds made from the same material as our kitchen countertops, and managed to find a remnant (our counters were installed 12 years ago), bring it over for my approval, and then Gary instructed the stonemason to cut the thresholds very specifically to accommodate both walkers and people in wheelchairs and/or walking devices, thus making the movement from kitchen through the 4 doorways into other rooms a seamless transition, not to mention creating beautiful thresholds. The crew was very respectful of our house and us, and we couldn't have asked for nicer people to work with. When the job was finished, the only thing my husband and I had to do was clean. Heigar provided a turnkey installation.

We have had the pleasure of working with Heigar contracting for three home remodels- a kitchen and second bath, and most recently a master bathroom. Gary and Heidi are a pleasure to work with and always make it a priority to give you all the pros and cons but offer all viable solutions and suggestions for what you are doing. Gary makes a point to ensure you are given all the information you need to make a informed decision and not leave any stone unturned. Their communication is great- very open and honest about all aspects of the work. Additionally, their work is impeccable and of the highest quality. Their team is fantastic- between making sure the cats won't sneak through a hole in the wall or answer all sorts of questions for my daughter and genuinely enjoying it, they always clean up their work space inside and out and make the process of renovations that much easier to live in. Honestly there is not another team I'd trust my home to and will be sad when we run out of projects. I'd highly recommend them to anyone!

FANTASTIC WORK! Gary and his crew (Brandon, Cary and Justin) are professionals that do outstanding work, with attention to detail that is second to none! Gary implemented a plan for both bathrooms that incorporated our vision and his practical experience and knowledge of materials. Gary worked with us to make decisions that were practical and fit our budget. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I will hire again when its time to do my kitchen.

Not only was the price comparable to other pricing I obtained; the other guy wanted to break the tile around my tub to replace faucet I broke but Gary proposed a way of doing it by going through the shower to get to that area.  Gary and his wife brought tile samples and granite samples, over saw his glass door contractor for the custom glass explaining star fire to me and ingredient in the glass that will repel droplets.  The glass is so clear I have to work to see it.  Great work I would recommend.

It was a bathroom remodeled in 2009 by the flipper that sold us the house. We suspected there had been underlying problems with the bathroom for a few years now, and decided we would gut it and re-do it from scratch. We finalized the project details around the first of September and Gary put us on their schedule to begin 9/14. They began work as scheduled and estimated it would be two work weeks. We had some contingencies in the plan and associated pre-priced optional items to account for them. For example, the subfloor was rotted out pretty badly beneath the tile so we had Heigar replace it. They also found the toilet flange was in poor shape, particularly given it was not at a proper elevation so we replaced it vs. building it up. No other major issues (phew!) were encountered. We had a minor change to the tub surround tile accent pattern and Heigar worked with us to implement a low-cost adjustment. When we changed our mind on that design after it had been put into place, Gary yanked it out with no fanfare and changed it to our alternative design. Given our tub surround tile change, we lost one day on the schedule. We lost a second one with a work crew illness. On the last day of the project, Heigar found that the brand new toilet we purchased had a small leak near the flange. Gary personally took it back to Home Depot and exchanged it even before letting us know of the issue. 
Heigar did a great job for us. The design help was valuable and aided our decision making. The project schedule was held other than for a couple unavoidable issues beyond their control. The finish work is impeccably perfect. We cannot speak more highly of the customer service and responsiveness we received. We have experienced flaky contractors in NoVa in the past. When you find a gem, you use them repeatedly and tell everyone you know. Heigar is one of those gem contractors and we've already referred other friends to Gary and Heidi. The highest praise we can give is our repeat business. We are finalizing plans for the remodeling of a second bathroom and will be working with Heigar once again.

There is no need for me to write another glowing report on the work of Heigar Contracting as Gary (owner) and his assistants, Brandon and Justin, did their usual excellent work. You can see my previous reports of bathroom renovations.
They replaced the floor with ceramic tile, repaired drywall, installed a new vanity and water lines, and painted the room. We continue to be pleased with Heigar Contracting's work and will use them for our biggest project yet to come: kitchen renovation! I would strongly recommend them.

Overall, Gary's work on this second bathroom was as good as the first.  He is a master tile setter with years of experience in construction. He gave us a reasonable estimate and made suggestions for things we might have not have considered (tile accent strip, inset soap niche, paint colors, etc). Gary and his team began on the promised start date and showed up each day at the indicated time. His team was very thorough and cleaned up beautifully at the end of each day (to include vacuuming the hall carpet). Gary's work and expertise instills a confidence in his clients. The bottom line is we trusted Gary to give us good work at a fair price and we got that....and more. We now have tentative plans to move to the main floor with renovating the power room and including a new floor in that room and foyer to match the hardwood in the living room. And following that, my wife and I will have Gary begin our kitchen renovation, a task we've put off for many years.  I would highly recommend Heigar Contracting to provide anyone an estimate for renovation. I'm sure his prices will be competitive but I'm confident his work will be unsurpassed!

Gary and his team go out of their way to explain what exactly they will do all the possible options for you to consider. His work is extremely reasonable and the results have exceeded our expectations. You know when talking with Gary that he is going to give it to you straight and won't add anything frivolous that you might not want/need. Gary's outstanding results and pricing has guaranteed that we won't be calling any other contractors for work. I highly recommend his services.

If there was a higher rating for Heigar Contracting, I would gladly give it! Gary Oldland surveyed the project and gave us a competitive bid to do the work we wanted. He also gave us opportunities at various points in the work to consider changes and upgrades, such as using granite for the shower bench, sink top and threshold. Gary also manages only one project at a time, ensuring that he is on the job with his team of Jim and Brandon. They arrived promptly each day, carefully protected the household furniture during their work and cleaned up beautifully at the end of the day. We appreciated Gary's suggestions and never felt pressured to take them. Perhaps we spent a little more than originally planned, but that was definitely our choice. As a result, our bathroom is "drop-dead gorgeous" and almost a work of art. We are extremely pleased with Heigar Contracting and are planning on having Gary/team renovate the next bathroom in a couple of months. Excellent work; an excellent experience!

The entire project started on a Monday and was completed in 10 days (on Thursday of the following week) Some work was done on both Saturday and Sunday, but only a couple hours each day. Work began every morning around 7:45 am and ended around 4 pm, except for a couple days when the electrician came in the afternoon and worked until around 6:30 pm.

Each day when the workers left they vacuumed and cleaned everything up and put all their stuff out of our way.

Gary and the 3 men who worked with him were incredibly polite, kind, and professional.
