the bathrooms before even asking what our preferences were). Russell took pictures, measurements, got a sense for our budget needs and what we were looking for, and promised an estimate within a week. He kept that promise. He was the only one of the contractors to provide an estimate within the promised time frame ? we nearly had to beg the others to send us their estimates so we could compare.
We selected Cyrus Construction based on their low cost estimate combined with our first impression of Russell?s professionalism, great reviews on Angie?s List, and the firm belief that Russell was more of a partner in the process rather than a contractor. When it came time to select tile, Russell allowed us free reign in his showroom and patiently worked to help
select tile, accents, and grout colors. That was a satisfying and fun experience.
The foreman on the job was exceptional save for a few things. In one instance, he installed a basic shower drain and not the one he was supposed to because he thought we had chosen poorly and that the drain he put in was the better choice. That was extremely disappointing and caused a minor delay in the project and a put a dent in our confidence level of him. He tried a couple of short cuts ? nothing that would compromise structure or safety, but that he tried in order to speed up the project, only to cause delay. We reported a problem to him with a vent fan he installed ? it was far louder than it was supposed to be. He assured us the noise would go away once he finished ducting and installed the cover. The sound didn?t get any better.
The project is over and we are still working with the manufacturer to provide a new fan. Had he taken the time to slow down, listen, and allow for us to return the fan (by the time he agreed it was bad, his crew had already discarded the box). As for the rest of the crew ? we felt they were there to demo, mix thin set, lay tile, grout. The foreman (Roland) and Russell were there to give us bathrooms and peace of mind. There was a clear difference in mindsets between Russell, his foreman, and the crew. During demo, we had to ask the foreman to ask the crew to be careful removing debris and bringing in equipment - they had scratched walls and doorways. Speed is sometimes good; slow and careful is better.
It seems almost unfair to give a /C/ for professionalism because Russell is a top-notch professional, but there doesn't seem to be another way to capture a grade we give for the crew. And they were the ones we had to come home to each day. Russell deserves an /A/.
Russell was great in handling the times we called or emailed about an issue we wanted resolved and we are pleased with the final result and our final costs. To be fair, we had a number of change orders (adding a towel warmer, new radiator, different toilet than originally purchased, and a few others), and those caused delays themselves, no doubt some of the short cuts
were attempts to regain lost time.
"Cyrus Construction values each customer and strives to uphold high standards on each of our projects. Understandable setbacks sometimes occur in order processing and customer change orders which can interrupt a proposed project completion date and cause frustration. Cyrus takes pride in notifying clients of any delays in there project and in some cases offset these delays to assure our customers that we are here for them."
Everything needed to be gutted and we even needed a new ceiling as the original ceiling was fluorescent lights behind plastic panels. After selecting the cabinets, the countertop, the flooring, the ceiling lights, the sink, the faucet, etc. etc., we left town and left everything to James and his men. (We did have email connectivity). They did a fabulous job!!! Everything was done when we got home 2 weeks later and it looks wonderful. They had closed up the kitchen so that the rest of the house stayed clean. They also cleaned up everything.
I am absolutely amazed that I now that a gorgeous kitchen. I recommend James Araghi and Cyrus Construction unequivocally. The price was also extremely reasonable given they used top quality products.
James is very responsive to email and telephone calls. He is a very likable and professional individual that I came to like very much on a personal level. The workers were technically outstanding. They did a wonderful job from demolition to the final "fit and finish" work. They were always punctual and courteous to our family. When I had comments or touch recommendations, they quickly responded with no hesitation.
The only glitch in the effort was with the fixtures supplier. We used Ferguson's and they were horrible. Their delivery was incomplete and in some cases the wrong items. They delayed our project because we had to wait for them to get the products delivered correctly. James rearranged his schedule so the work was not delayed even though he had other projects scheduled. Cyrus did everything they could to expedite the project.
Cyrus also has a new Superintendent, Russell Blake. who was fantastic. He spoke with us daily to ensure that everything was being taken care of to our satisfaction.
I will call Cyrus again when we are ready to renovate our kitchen.
The work was completed efficiently. They were pretty neat overall.
I am very pleased with the overall work and I recommend Cyrus for kitchen and bathroom renovations.
"Thank you and it was pleasure working with you, I will make a constant effort to provide you and your referrals with excellent service, because in my business, the most profound assets I possess are your respect and trust. Thank you - James"
Based upon Angie's list reviews and feedback from neighbors, we met with 4 contractors for initial consultations. While each would have been a viable option, we went with Cyrus Construction because we felt that James understood our vision, was knowledgeable and was able to provide what we wanted within a reasonable timeframe and price. When we described the look we wanted, he was able to translate that exactly into the type of cabinetry we might like (and did select). We also felt strongly about doing all wood cabinetry, and James felt strongly about this as well. He emphasized the importance of making customers happy, in terms of sustaining his business. He also talked about how much trust he placed in his crews and that he worked with the same crews on each of his projects.
The bulk of our project took about two weeks to complete. Each day when we returned home from work, we could see progress being made. Carlos and Carlos were clearly dedicated and maintained a high quality of work, from the craftsmanship itself, to their ability to adjust quickly to new materials being introduced and their meticulous clean-up after each day's work. They were very respectful of our space and the fact that we were obviously still living in the house while the renovation was underway. Further, when we were at home while they were working, Carlos (junior) would walk us through what they were doing/had completed and ask for our opinions as necessary. James also had valuable suggestions along the way in terms of cabinet type, lighting, paint color and hardware.
James was always extremely responsive when we reached out to him, either by e-mail or phone. He consistently responded within the same day and provided answers to our questions, once asked. He and the team were also flexible with their schedules.
The one area where our experience could have been even better was around communication of the timeline for materials selections. When we signed our contract, we asked specifically about when we needed to make selections. We were told not to worry about it and that we would get a heads up when/how the selections needed to be made. For better or worse, that did not happen. This was not a big issue when it came to paint, tile or appliances because they were readily available. But, it did cause some delays with the granite and the hardware. This did not impact the quality of the work or our satisfaction with the end result, just a lesson learned. To his credit, James was receptive to this feedback when we shared it during the project. Also, once the hardware arrived, James and Carlos were flexible in terms of coming back to install it.
We would certainly consider using Cyrus again, if we decide to renovate our bathrooms or finish off the basement.
I was disappointed because when I say gut, I mean all sheet rock should be removed not cut around. I felt like this was cost cutting measures and contract was not honored. It appeared that James only has one crew and as a result they rush on my second bathroom.
Having bathrooms remodeled is very taxing on your family. You have to change/adapt to having your bathrooms out of commission for a week. While James does have a one year warranty, the thought of having those disruptions again is not worth it. A bathroom should be done right the first time, with no over runs.
"Member, we never mentioned in any of our conversation that we gut the bathrooms, Our crew spent three weeks at your property none stop M - S and provide the quality work as always. We never had any problem with our clients as far as quality of our work. Please review our previous reports from our clients. And price for two full bathrooms renovation include materials. Thank you James"
Between the two that were on time, there was clearly one who was more professional and obviously knew what he was talking about and doing -- That was James from Cyrus Construction. He listened to what we wanted to do and advised what we could and could not do and what would be feasible, cost wise. After getting his estimate and the other estimate, Cyrus was the lesser of the two, and the choice was clear. I think I would have chosen Cyrus even if they were a little bit more expensive.
The project started later than anticipated because we took forever to pick out what we wanted in the bathroom. Finally, James called us one day and asked us to meet him to pick out the things we needed for the bathroom, and we ended up getting everything picked out in one night.
They started soon after. Gomez and his fellow worker were very polite and clean and made sure they picked up after themselves. They showed up when they said they were going to show up and kept themselves out of the way if I was working from home. They only disturbed me if they needed a question answered. There was one day where they even went out to Manassas (from Alexandria), to make sure we got the tile that we wanted. We came in a little over budget, but not much, and that was due to us picking out more expensive things to install.
We are very pleased with our new bathroom, and it is one of our favorite rooms in the house. We will definitely be calling them again for any future remodeling work.
"Thank you and it was pleasure working with you, I will make a constant effort to provide you and your referrals with excellent service, because in my business, the most profound assets I possess are your respect and trust. Thank you - James"
