Jerry Jeffries knocked on our door Monday noting that he and his company were in the area doing work and he was asking for work. We had several large tulip poplars within 30'-40' of our house which needed to be taken down before they snapped liked matchsticks and fell on our house. We had been sweating out every strong storm that blew through and had lost several trees in the past 6 years due to strong wind storms. However, given the size and proximity to the house of these trees, I figured I would have to pay an arm and a leg to get them sawed down. Though I am usually very reluctant to use any "door knocker", especially for something like trees, I decided to let Jerry bid on the work, just to get an idea of the cost, rather than just continuing to guess. I showed him the trees, as well as an additional oak tree that had just died this past year - it wasn't close to the house, but it was very large and could fall on the road and take down utility lines if it fell in that direction. The price he quoted me was significantly lower than I had expected - I had no solid basis upon which to estimate the cost but I had planned on having to spend several thousand dollars more. These trees were between 95'-115' tall ! In addition, Jerry told me he could start the job the next day. He also told me he would grind the stumps, plus some additional stumps I had on the property, for a small amount more. It almost seemed to good to be true, so I asked if his company was a legitimate business and whether it carried appropriate insurance. He took me to his truck, where he had a document bag/portfolio in which he carries his contractor's license from VA and proof of insurance. Against my better judgment, I decided to accept the quote and get this work done- usually I am very deliberate when it comes to hiring contractors, using Angie's List, looking at the BBB website and using Checkbook Magazine - but Jerry said and did all the right things. Ultimately, I did not regret engaging Jerry and his company to perform the work. They did exactly what they said they were going to do. The damage to our property was minimal and incidental given the location and size of the trees - a few of our azaleas were crushed and the tops of a couple of nearby smaller trees were severed. Jeffries Tree Service employees cleaned up our property better than I expected - my expectation was based on other trees we had taken down 15-20 years ago. It did take them longer than they had expected - Jerry told me near the end of the first day that these trees had "fooled" him and were bigger than he originally thought and he really wanted the work since he was in the area already with his equipment. So it took them two days to get all the work done - Tuesday and Thursday, Wednesday's rain took that day away. But rather than try to renegotiate for more money, Jerry said that a deal was a deal and that he really appreciated my willingness to engage them to do the work. Overall this was a very good experience for us and I will not hesitate to call Jerry if we need additional tree work performed.

He gives us a good price. Always leaves the site well cleaned up. He manages very well and makes sure his staff is doing a good job.
