What was supposed to be a 10 day project to redo the concrete pool deck has turned into a 6 month nightmare that remains undone. The general contractor, Gant Design+Build was to remove and dispose of the existing concrete, pour a new concrete pool deck with a rock salt finish and a two-tone stain and sealer. Additionally the project included relocating the pool pump and filter, installing a new light in the pool, and installing a pavestone firepit. What Gant Design+Build has delivered to date is unacceptable. There are significant workmanship issues in almost every section of the concrete installed by the general contractor's crew…roller indentions, permanent damage caused by them improperly using a pressure washer, exposed aggregate, several raised rough spots that the general contractor's concrete crew failed to smooth out before it cured to name a few. All are highly visible and exacerbated by the addition of the color and sealer; which the general contractor has already acknowledged is a problem, with roller marks and inconsistent coverage. In addition to the workmanship issues in the surface finish, there is already a significant crack running through the thickness of one of the sections of concrete. The skimmer housing installed by the general contractor's crew is cracked. The handrail for the pool was installed in the wrong place when they poured the new concrete and now we cannot access the pool steps properly. The yard still has a large hole in it with exposed pool plumbing. The pool equipment was relocated per the agreement but the concrete pad they installed is cracked all the way through and the pool equipment is not secured to the pad. Additionally, when the equipment was moved to the new location, the plumbing was modified without consulting us as the homeowner and now the ability to backflush the filter is no longer available. There are several stains on the pool stairs, seats, and side walls where the concrete stain was allowed by the general contractor's crew to drip into the pool. These stains will not come off. In addition to the stains, there is adhesive residue around the rim of the pool left by the general contractor's concrete crew when they removed the forms to create the bullnose edge. The firepit cap stones have adhesive stains on them where the general contractor's associate installed them improperly and then tried to fix his errors by scraping the adhesive off and flipping the stones upside down and regluing them down. We continue to pull shards of concrete out of the pool as pieces flake off from the concrete around the pool lip. The concrete was poured 6 months ago. I can't imagine having the concrete start cracking and flaking off is what is supposed to happen. These are just some of the examples of the poor workmanship and outstanding issues with the project. All of the issues mentioned above are documented in photos. As other reviewers have noted, Gant Design+Built has a problem with meeting deadlines, as evidenced by a 10 day project remaining undone for 6 months. He would committ to work getting done and then he could not get his subs to return his calls and texts and show up for the time/day committed to the customer. Per the signed agreement, Gant Design+Build included a 10 year warranty on all workmanship on the project. We have attempted over the last 6 months to get Gant Design+Build to fix all the damage and workmanship issues without complete resolution. Gant Design+Build is refusing to honor his warranty and fix all the damage/workmanship issues related to the concrete in particular. Since Gant Design+Build is refusing to honor their warranty, we obtained a quote from another contractor to fix all the damage and workmanship issues. There were so many issues with the work done by Gant Design+Build that the other contractor said that he would just have to start over to fix them all. Gant Design+Build states in his sales pitch that he only uses the best subs. Unfortunately for us, we found out after the fact that the pool sub he hired to work on our project was recently the subject of a WBTV On Your Side investigation for violating the terms of his license. He was also under investigation by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors and they were prepared to revoke his license and shut down his business. Look up Trey Turner of Backyard Pool and Spa and WBTV and you will see the whole story. Maybe we will ultimately have to go the WBTV route to properly resolve our terrible experience as well. The pictures attached to this review are just a sample of all the issues with this project and show the type of sub par work you can expect from Gant Design+Build

They were really a great bunch of people to work with. But they were very unorganized. That was my main issue with them.

I interviewed and received 5 quotes from Angie's list members. I chose Gant based price and previous reviews. I had provided each company with a CAD drawing of what I wanted to have built so the quotes were apples to apples.

This deck was built between January 2014 and February 2014. The weather was terrible, some mornings the temps were in the teens, but the crews showed up on time and worked in really miserable conditions while remaining very professional.

Craftsmanship was great and they were always open if I had a question or suggestion as to how I wanted something to look.

I also had the gas company provide a "T" off my connection to my gas logs for my grill. Since this was against the back of my fireplace, the foreman suggested I let them construct a bench to hide the pipe, serve as a serving table or seat. The hinged lid allows me access to the gas connection and provides storage for chair cushions.

Throughout the entire process, Barry was attentive to all of our concerns and always willing to give his expert opinion to find the proper solution.  He gave my wife and I some direction from his experiences that ultimately ended up with my family having the outdoor area to enjoy that we have always wanted.  We had somewhat of an idea of what kind of an outdoor area we were looking for but lacked the true understanding of what it would take to make this happen.  Barry was attentive to all of our needs and gave us exactly what we wanted while remaining within our budget.  He provided clear communication at all times and showed up when he said he would.  He honored all parts of the contract and I have no complaints.  I would definitely recommend Gant Design and Build to anyone who needs a very nice outdoor area to enjoy for years to come.

We met many times with Barry to create and review our project plan and he and his colleagues were incredibly responsive and provided excellent ideas and flexibility-great advice.  The project was extensive and the crew were diligent and hard working throughout. Barry supervised the project regularly and was constantly touching base with us to ensure that we were happy with the progress of the project. We are extremely pleased with the results and the crew went above and beyond to ensure a quality result.  We enjoy our new porch/covered deck so much that we prefer to be in our 'outdoor room,' even when it's cold outside.  We would recommend Gant Design + Build to anyone (and have been doing so verbally) who wants excellent quality and integrity of design.  We are also planning to contact Gant Design for future projects that we have in mind.
