I hired Mr. James at the suggestion of a friend and his good ratings here. He is a talented handyman when he's there. Maybe he's gotten too busy. Maybe something has changed. But for whatever reason he seems to have a hard time showing up.
I contacted Mr. James and waited for him to come over and give an estimate. That took a couple weeks. Then he sent me the estimate and I waited 2-3 weeks more for him to do the work. One or two days before he was supposed to start, he called and said "the job I'm working on is taking longer than expected and the owner wants it done. I'm going to have to reschedule with you."
Sure, that happens - BUT YOU KNOW IT BEFORE THE 11TH-HOUR. I reluctantly agreed and we rescheduled for a couple weeks later.
When the revised date finally arrived I explained to Mr. James that I needed to walk out the door at 8:30 am absolute latest, so he agreed to arrive at 8 am. Around the time he was supposed to be there he called and said - wait for it - there was traffic! and he'd be around 8:20. Finally about 8:30 I got in my car and readied to drive away when he finally arrived. He seemed shocked, shocked that there was traffic in the DC area, which he inexplicably failed to account for. I nearly missed a crucial doctor's appointment and had to beg the doctor's nurse to see me.
So even for his make-up appointment, even for the appointment he re-scheduled after blowing me off for another job, he STILL couldn't show up on time.
Because the porch needed roofing work he was not able to finish it the first time and we scheduled a return visit. I also put together a lengthy list of additional work that I think would have taken at least a couple days - a nice bit of business for him. Mr. James had sent me an email saying he could be here today. The last time I talked to him I said, "I have a hole in my kitchen ceiling and this stuff is important so just come as soon as soon as you can." Apparently that wasn't clear because Mr. James never showed, never called, and in mid-afternoon texted to say he wasn't sure he was supposed to come. (He also said he's sick today, which would be fine if he'd let me know)
So he blew me off the first time at the 11th hour, showed up nearly 30 minutes late the second time, and today just didn't show at all. Here I am on the verge of October trying to get work completed that I initiated in June.
David James is a very, very skilled handyman. If you don't work or responsibilities or other things to occupy your time, he just might be worth waiting for.
David is courteous and polite. I had to leave several times and felt very comfortable leaving David in my home. I will use David as my official handyman as long as he shows up. You can not do better.
