I really wish Angie's List supported picture uploads because they truly are indisputable. But since I can't I'll do my best to describe.
The main surface is uneven with some parts being thicker than others. Some areas have lines in it making it look like they patched the surface rather than surfacing the entire thing. Keep in mind, this was supposed to be an entirely new layer of asphalt.
One area pools water when it rains.
As part of the job, they were supposed to backfill a portion of the driveway to ensure it remained stable. I would have expected a normal fill material but instead their choice was sand. After the first rain the sand had washed 20' into my yard and now I have to replant the grass the sand suffocated.
Three weeks after the job was complete the asphalt still had not set up. Parking a vehicle on it for more than an hour left depressions. I sent a text to Willy asking if this was normal but he never answered. I guess maybe Willy thought this was a rhetorical question?
The edge of the 120' driveway started falling off after a month under nothing but its own weight.
Willy's crew came back out to "fix" the edge. But the area they fixed looks like they torched it so badly that a large portion resembles a crumbly patch of black gravel.
I will be surprised if it lasts the winter.
When I called to request estimate, I got the impression Mr. Hicks was the one coming to give me the estimate, but it was Mr. Hick's son who showed up to give me the estimate. He appeared so young, I wasn't sure he knew the ropes yet. The estimate was based on 2 1/2 in. of asphalt to resurface my existing drive, which is quite long (over 100 ft long, and widens out in the back of the house), and to pave the gravel turn-around ( an area large enough to easily park a car or turn-around). The price Willy Jr. gave me was higher than the price I had in mind, but we were able to negotiate a price that seemed reasonable to my husband and I.
I can't say if the price is competitive because I did not get other estimates, but it was a price that I could live with. Mr. Hicks was recommended by a friend who had used him for similar work at her house and was very satisfied. He also did seal-coating for other neighbors of hers and they were happy. I wanted to use someone who came highly recommended for this type of work since I was badly burned by some fly-by night crooks a year ago who were supposed to seal-coat my drive and all they did was steal my money. A lesson learned the hard way.
Mr. Hicks, 5 or 6 men, and all kinds of very well maintained equipment showed up to resurface my drive around 9:30 AM and were finishing up when I returned home from work that evening at 5 PM. The driveway looked brand new, and to have the turn-around paved was wonderful.
When Mr. Hicks came back the next day to pick up the check, we showed him a place we noticed later that was about 2 ft. by 2 ft between the asphalt that butted up to our sidewalk and the new paved turnaround that the men did not pave. It just didn't look very appealing and also, when you backed into the turn-around you were backing over the edges of the asphalt. We asked Mr. Hicks if he could come back and pave that small area so we weren't constantly backing over the edges of the asphalt and also it would look better. He agreed it should have been filled in. It took a couple of weeks, but Mr. Hicks sent his guys out yesterday and they filled in the small area. I am VERY pleased with the results!!
Mr. Hicks says I will need to have the entire drive seal-coated after a year. I haven't yet received an estimate on what this would cost for my drive.
I am very happy with how the driveway looks and hope it lasts a long long time!
