"Sometimes during the course of the estimating process things are said that trigger a little voice inside & tells you to walk away, you shouldn’t work for this client. I should have listened. This became more evident soon after the job started when he said to me “I’m going to say jump and you are going to ask me how high”. He also wrote during the process “We (the client) apparently did not do a good job up front clearly identifying what we (the client) expected” An example of this; Hardie plank was the specified siding and the client selected the color. He decided he didn’t like it but didn’t say anything until after the installation was complete. The client then stated that we had installed the corner trim pieces improperly. There were installed exactly as a diagram of the installation instructions are on the Hardie website. An alternate method is also available and that is what is what the client based his assertion on that we had installed it improperly. We could have easily replaced the trim boards and installed the alternate method of installation but the client demanded we remove the Hardie and install a completely different product. During the discussions we had with the client it was obvious his real issue was his dissatisfaction of the product and rather than create further conflict we agreed to replace this product at no additional cost to him. He wanted a vinyl siding with a foam insulation attached that had some installation issues of its own. Because some of the areas where this product was being installed were narrow, the siding needed to flex to fit into the channel and when you went to flex it the foam popped loose and that is why it was glued back on. Steps were built with a slight fall (slope) for drainage – this is a common practice safety measure so water doesn’t stand. The only way you could tell it had a slope was because the step lined up with a mortar joint and you could see it. But the client insisted they be level so we made them level. When the homeowner decided he wanted to use LED lighting instead of the incandescent ones, we asked the electrician to price the additional cost of LED recessed lighting since he was providing the standard specified lights and passed on to the clients the electricians additional cost only. As far as the hump in the floor - we were closing in an existing structure - hump was already there and would have been a change order to correct it. He said no he was handling the floor. All of the beaded paneling and trim was milled at a local mill company and not just purchased off the shelf of a lumber yard. This remodeling project was permitted by the city and all inspections were properly conducted and passed by the building department."
This project lasted fourteen weeks. The kitchen receives many compliments from visitors, and is a huge improvement over the previous one. The decisions I made for cabinets, hardware, flooring, countertops, and backsplash make the space a lovely and efficient one. Jason Brewer replaced the former project manager near the end of the project, and he handled my questions and any necessary adjustments with professionalism.
Update: Mr. Harris has not responded to any of my requests to settle our dispute. He has filed a suit against me for the check I stopped payment on. I intend to issue him a new check in that amount so that I no longer have to be involved in his battle against accountability.
On 1-22-15 Kevin came by the house for the Home Improvement consultation. Consultation went smoothly and a pre construction meeting was going to be scheduled in two to three weeks. Unfortunately I had to go out of town for business within that two to three weeks, so they scheduled the pre-construction in the morning prior of me leaving out of town which they went out of they way to do.
On 2-02-15 the pre-construction meeting the Jason (Project Specialist) properly planned on the material, equipment, and the scheduled project. The pre-construction meeting went well and a date was set for the project for 02-23-15 to 02-25-15. Right on the project date there was a scheduling issue. Management said they called my wife on 02-20-2015 for a scheduled change. As I complained that my wife had no phone call from them, and that I never gave them her phone number, Jason (Project Specialist) still manage the time to start on the project on the preconstruction contract. Jason squeezed two projects, one at my place and at another household bouncing back and forth on the project and also coordinating with the electrician. Jason superbly finished the job on time on the written contract. Also Jason's communication was great letting me know what was going on with his other project, coordination with the electrician, fighting traffic and bad snow conditions.
Overall the experience was good with the project but management conflicted with the scheduling. Management needs to understand to keep proper written contracts, and to do one project at a time for a great quality of work and time efficiency.
Exactly as promised, Jerry came back to me within a week with a very competitive and reasonable estimate for our remodeling job. His design was innovative and creative given the relatively small space that he had to work with. He also priced out each option so that we could make informed decisions on "must haves" vs "nice to haves" vs "I'm curious but don't know if I want this" features. I was impressed with Jerry's responsiveness, professionalism, and attention to detail. He was also very accommodating when I asked to add and delete some features from the original proposal/estimate, and quickly provided me with the details I had requested.
Bottom line, it was easy to see why Jerry Harris Remodeling has been on Hampton Road's "Best of" list in multiple categories. Although we decided not to go ahead with the remodeling job at this time, I would have been very confident hiring Jerry Harris' team based on my experience with working with him.
Overall, the work was completed as ordered, although there were a lot of what I considered unnecessary delays. Lots of wasted time where it took a long time to get minimal work done. It took about 6 weeks to get the job done. Some days the solitary worker would spend more of the day on the phone presumably managing other jobs, while demolition or other work was being left undone at ours. Not to mention that one of the subcontractors actually stole some of my wife's medication from the bedside table. When informed, they fired the individual and then provided direct supervision of the remaining contractor, but nonetheless, obviously suboptimal.
I also felt like there were additional charges for re-routing the plumbing that was obviously going to be there, considering that the wall being opened up backed the kitchen sink, and was below an upstairs bathroom. They wound up billing extra for the plumbing re-route.
They contracted Winn Stone to match the granite, which was done perfectly. The bar also looks great, but the corbels that we were provided a line art drawing of were much larger than anticipated. We refused to pay for them considering their size was unnecessarily large, which was reportedly not a returnable item. They said that they would be stuck with them, although I'm certain they could be used on another job with a bigger bar.
Finally, when there were concerns about a water leak causing the hardwood floor to swell, they tore and left a hole in the wall for troubleshooting. Turned out that the problem was our dishwasher leaking, but the hole was left for me to repair. I did so because I didn't want them to come back. I feel fairly certain that this was done because of the corbels.
I wound up replacing the cut out drywall, patching the mud work, and repainting it myself instead of dealing with them any further.
Bottom line, they did good work, were overpriced, slow, and unwilling to make reasonable accommodations without retribution, in my opinion.
