We have been going to Edinburgh Vet Hosp.and Dr. Campbell since they opened in Chesapeake. We have several dogs and cats, so we are always taking one or two to the clinic. Service has always been very good. Dr. Campbell is an outstanding Vet that is very knowledgeable about so many pet health problems. I always refer my friends to Edinburgh Vet Hospital.

It went horrifically. The staff was not able to obtain a fecal sample to determine if the diarrhea was due to bacterial overgrowth. Despite that, Dr. Mapes prescribed an antibiotic, which I thought was a very bad idea because I believe the diarrhea was a side effect of her other medications, not a bacterial overgrowth. When Dr. Mapes spoke to me, she did not disclose the specific antibiotic. I had to ask. She prescribed metronidazole. Unfortunately, I have had a number of very bad experiences with metronidazole, including one dog who had neurological side effects from the drug. I will never, ever use that drug again. Dr. Mapes did not seem open to discuss my objections about metronidazole. Yet, I was sent home with it. It is my opinion that Dr. Mapes did not listen to my objections and would not provide another option. Based upon my dog's history, which Dr. Mapes was not familiar with, nor inquired about, prescribing metronidazole would be a huge mistake. I cordially objected to that antibiotic, and it seemed that Dr. Mapes did not have the time to discuss a better option. She also claimed that no other antibiotic can be used to treat diarrhea - I do not believe that is a true statement. She did prescribe a probiotic. However, I am already using one. So essentially I left with a sick dog, and an extremely poor treatment plan. She never discussed a bland diet or any other approaches. i came in with a sick dog, and left with a sick dog, the only change that occurred was to my bank account. It is my opinion that Dr. Mapes did not discuss the issues with me, and did not disclose the specific treatment plan until I asked. The whole appointment was a waste of time and money. More importantly, I left with a sick dog without a viable treatment plan. The reason I saw Dr. Mapes instead of my regular vet was because she was not in. Even in the worst of circumstances, the most dire of emergencies, I will never return. What occurred at Edinburgh Animal Hospital would never have occurred with my regular veterinarian. Upon returning home, I was angry and disgusted. I called their office to speak to the office manager but she had already left for the day. (My call was placed before 4PM and they are open to 7PM.) Their solution was that I could return the metronidazole for a refund. Clearly, they totally missed the point. My dog means the world to me. I am in a great deal of distress because as her advocate, I sought intervention for her, and was unable to get the help that she needed. The following is most troubling. All along I communicated that I feared that my dog's diarrhea was due to taking a prescribed drug, Vetmedin, when she did not have a full stomach. (Occasionally she refuses to eat after taking her meds.) After returning home I googled Vetmedin and it stated: "Discontinue giving Vetmedin and contact your veterinarian if your pet develops; poor appetite, drowsiness, diarrhea." Why is it that Dr. Mapes didn't know this and advise me to discontinue Vetmedin??????? Instead, there was no treatment plan that included discontinuing Vetmedin, only a prescription for a very strong antibiotic when there was no evidence that she had a bacterial overgrowth. My dog has a pacemaker as well as a serious heart valve defect. She is a five pound dog whose health is already compromised. What occurred today was unconscionable. Boo. Hiss.

My wife told me to go there. It is near our house and they also do pet care. They were able to keep our dog for a week and also give it shots.

To understand why I love Edinburg Animal Hospital I need to explain my background and prior experiences: I am a Veterinarians Daughter, and though I grew up with animals, I never had to go to a Veterinarian until my Dad died in 2006. I was very spoiled as an adult by him coming to my house for shots and vaccinations, and if my pet's needed an office visit or surgery he would pick them up at my house and take them in to the hospital. (Tidewater Animal Hospital) After his death in 2006 I had a really hard time taking my dog to a new Veterinarian, and it was compounded by the fact that at the time I had a very good dog who acted terrible at the Vet's office. I had extreme anxiety because of it and avoided taking my dog to the Veterinarian until I couldn't avoid it any longer. (Such as Rabies shots due, etc) When I found Dr Campbell the first thing I noticed was that I felt more comfortable and relaxed, and they were much more confident about handling my dog's anxiety and behavior. One thing I love that they do is to come into the office to talk to me first, and then they take my dog into the other room to examine them. This takes so much responsibility off of me to try to control my dogs behavior. In 2008 Dr Campbell diagnosed my dog's Cancer, and when he called to tell me, he spent a long time on the phone talking to me about it, and his compassion really helped me through that dark time of saying good bye to my beloved friend. I now have two dogs, Gracie is a new puppy patient at Edinburg as of yesterday. Sarah, my five year old dog has been a regular visitor at Edinburg since a puppy. She is very prone to and quot;boo boo'sand quot; and has needed to be mended a few times. Dr Campbell recently performed surgery on both of her legs for cruciate ligament replacement. She could barely walk prior to surgery and now she is running and playing just like a puppy. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about everyone that works at Edinburg Animal Hospital, and if Sarah could talk she would say the same thing. She loves going there and receives so much love and attention that she can only respond with kisses for everyone!!

The Veterinarian himself has always been very good. I have had 3 dogs I have taken to this Vet for more than 10 years, however recently he has hired some front office staff that really require some training. They are rude and non-responsive. Specifically my youngest dog recently became sick just after a check up, really sick. I called to see if I could bring him by fearing that the sickness was a reaction to a vaccination. I was told to take my dog to Emergency room Veterinarian hospital. My dog was sick...not that sick. I was told that no appointments were available. Now I'm a reasonable person, however when I spend close to $4500 dollars a year at this Vet for several years and I call to see if they can see one of there routine patients, I would expect that they could slip my dog into see the Vet. Instead I ended up taking my dog to a Vet hospital and it cost me $250 dollars just to walk into the door. I have since changed Veterinarians, I do not recommend Edinburgh Animal Hospital if you love your pet.

We came from another provider because this firm gave us more flexibility and freedom of choice in the medicines that are required for our cat; the cat requires insulin. They have been much more responsive in allowing us to fill our prescriptions wherever we like; with them or with another provider which other veterinarians in the area do not do. They also have been much more informative with some of our choices. In all the other areas they have provided excellent service and are punctual, professional and caring. Overall a good experience.

Dr. Campbell took time to explain the options for each cat (Sydney and Emma) He gave detailed information on care and what to expect before any course of action was taken. Both cats have muliple problems and while the ultimate choice for what care is given to them, I truly appreciate the recommendations/suggestions offered by Dr. Campbell. Sydney has cancer and had to have toes amputated. He had some complications after surgery - the foot didn't heal well. When I called in to the office I was asked to bring Sydney in for examination as soon as possible. To assure that the foot did heal properly Sydney was kept for a few days in a confined area where he was cared for and treated until the foot had recovered. Emma is having problems with her bladder. I was counseled on diet and management of her condition with medication. When Emma didn't respond as expected, the management of her symptoms was tweaked to fit her needs and to make sure she was made happy and comfortable. Both cats are at home now and are doing as well as can be expected with regard to their ages and conditions.

The care and attention given to our dog exceeded our expectations. The office is friendly, and the cleanliness is evident by the office permitting clients to see the entire operation.
Response from Edinburgh Animal Hospital
"THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE REVIEW ON ANGIE'S LIST. I'M GLAD ALL WORKED OUT FOR SCOUT AND HE HEALED UP WELL. PROCEDURES AND SURGERIES DON'T ALWAYS WORK OUT AS PLANNED WITH PETS, BUT YOU ALL WERE VERY UNDERSTANDING WHILE WE CORRECTED SCOUT'S PROBLEMS. THANKS. DR. C."
