The sales rep, manager and owner came out 2-3 days later. They got down on their hands and knees and even though the tiles were uneven they said it was an acceptable job! The manager asked me if I would let another floor subcontractor come out and roll the tiles with a hand roller around the perimeter. I said I had already contacted the manufacturer and the glue was set meaning it was too late to try and get the tiles to adhere if they weren't already. He still wanted to know if another subcontractor could come out. Not surprisingly their choice of subcontractor said the job was acceptable! He took a little hand roller and ran it around the perimeter of the room. No improvement.
Each time I was told the job was and quot;acceptableand quot; I said they would not want this in their home and I wasn't going to pay the balance until it was corrected to my satisfaction. I was told to give them a couple of weeks for the new tiles to be delivered.
About a month went by and no word. Then I got a bill in the mail for the balance. I called the business and told the accounts manager the issue and that I wasn't paying the balance until the floor was redone. Money talks, and before you know it they ordered new tiles which meant they hadn't and weren't planning on redoing the floor until I called about the bill.
The second time around was acceptable except for the fact that they installed cheap, dark stained, pine quarter round knowing that the contract said I was removing, refinishing and re-installing the existing oak quarter round. They most likely did this so that if a tile was cut too short, they would be able to cover it up with the ugly quarter round. The dark quarter round is truly an eye sore.
I was so tired of dealing with the business, I let it go, but between tenants, I am going to remove that quarter round and put the oak quarter round down. I will not be surprised if I have to break into our extra tiles (I had to buy a whole box) to repair the tiles so that the oak quarter round will cover the edges.
This company started out very professional and amicable, but when it came to backing the work their subcontractors performed, they were very hard to deal with. I was going to give them considerable business, but I will never use them again.
The ordering process that led up to the installation did'nt go as well. We started the process back in ealry June when we went to the Floors Are Us showroom and picked out the flooring we wanted. This flooring was ordered and we paid for the materials up front in full. The install date was set for July 5.
We arranged to take July 5th off from work, and spent most of the day July 4 moving all the furniture out of the living room. The installers were supposed to be at the house around 10:00am.....at 10:10am I called Floors Are Us wondering where the installers were....the Floors Are Us person told me to call one of the head guys named Justin. When I called him, he aplogized and told me that when the installers were loading the materials they noticed it was the wrong flooring and that it would have to be reordered....
So....we took a day off and moved tons of furniture for nothing.....long story short....no one checked to verify the right flooring had come in...the wrong stuff sat in their storage room for 2 weeks and no one ever verified it was the correct flooring for our job....and we were stuck for another 2 weeks with a house in chaos until the right flooring arrived and a new install date could be arranged...which was July 20.
So, the bad news was a major delay and disruption for us and wasting a day of vacation time.
The good news was that they arranged for the installers to come on a Saturday so we could avoid another day of vacation time and took a few hundred off the price.
Again, the installers were great -- the ordering process and communication with the customer wasn't so good.
If you use them, you will have to stay on top of them every step since they don't pay much attention to detail....and if you do, you'll do fine
The installer noticed I had not replaced the hallway carpet and were conscientious enough to check on my plans before they cut it for the transition. When I told them I planned to tile they made sure to leave the carpet so that it could be tucked appropriately after that work was done.
I had the tile work done 4 months later. This time they came out right after a snow storm right when they said they would. They did a great job and showed me every little detail in terms of any issues with the sub floor or walls or any decisions they had to make regarding adjustments or placement.
The carpet guys were back the very next day to finish the transition to the tile area. And everything looks awesome!
My only little complaint would be that they forgot to tell me I would have to get a plumber to reset my toilet. It was on the quote, but I thought it meant there was a charge for them to bring in a plumber. Not a big deal and nothing that would keep me from coming back.
We will probably be replacing carpet in rooms on our second level later this year and will certainly consider Floors
Are Us for this work.
Then that night, I sat on the steps and noticed that one strip of shoe molding was crooked. I took a closer look (it was behind the door to the garage) and it only had one nail holding it on. I could pull it away from the baseboard. So, at 8 the next morning I called the laminate guy and told him to meet me after 4pm with his nail gun to finish the work. He had to not only nail that one strip, but several that only had a few nails in them. I could push most of the shoe molding with my foot to make it flush with the base boards.
Now, I am just curious how long this flooring will last...
Also, we had an earthquake here about 6 weeks ago, so in the pics you'll see some of the cracks in the drywall. I am currently, on the hunt for someone to fix that right now since I have cracks in several places in my 2 yo townhouse. (hopefully, after I submit this report I can add photos??? - don't see where on this page)
