Countertop and Backsplash Service
$1,100
This review is about laminate countertops I bought through
Home Depot of Reston and manufactured and installed by Precision-Countertops of
Chantilly. Note that this company makes and installs laminate countertops for
many of the Home Depots in this area. Also note that Precision-Countertops also
goes by the name of Precision Laminate Workshop at the same address.
First, about Home Depot; I talked to three sales people at
Home Depot. The first was knowledgeable but a bit brusque. The second took my
measurements and came up with the wrong total square footage ? math error,
resulting in a excessive price estimate. The third was not knowledgeable but at
least could do the math right. He also was not familiar with the options
available for the edges and backsplash. Anyway, I placed an order since I had
my wife?s family coming in from South America and I need to get the job done
before they arrived.
The estimator from Precision-Countertops arrived. He was a
bull in a china shop kind of guy. He looked at the new sink I had that needed
to be installed and saw that it was going to be a tight fit. We discussed
potential problems. Actually, the new sink was smaller than the existing sink.
He did his measurements and explained the edge options that were available. I
made it clear that the removal of the old countertop was included in my order ?
it was also noted as such on the invoice from Home Depot.
Installation day came and my install was the first of the
day for them. The man who took the final measurements, and a helper, was the
install team. The first thing he asked me was if I was going to remove the old
countertop. I told him no. He had written on the notes he took when he made the
measurements that I was to remove the countertop. He called his shop, they
checked the invoice and told him he was to remove the countertop.
I left them alone while they worked. It turned out that the
cutout for the sink was not made in the right place. They had to cut out
portions of the adjacent cabinets to get the sink installed ? a lot of cutting.
When they had it installed, I came downstairs and they were sealing around the
sink. I noticed that the edge of the sink, on one side, was slightly above the
countertop ? wasn?t laying flat. I was told not to worry that it would be okay.
They left.
My biggest peeve is that the back and side splashes did not
meet each other ?correctly.? The pattern I ordered was a stripped one and the
stripes didn?t come close to matching where the corners met. See the
photographs.
I called Precision Countertops and explained my complaint. A
young lady told me to send pictures, which I did. I didn?t hear anything from them
for several days so I sent another email with pictures attached. After a few
more days I finally received an email stating that another company had done the
manufacturing of the countertops (I doubt that). It also said that the
manufacturing process couldn?t be regulated to match the stripes ? I seriously
doubt that. It also said that perhaps they could remanufacture the side and
back splashes but there was no guarantee that the stripes would match. There
would also be some cost to me. It said that she would have to get her boss?s
approval to redo the splashes and to provide me with some cost relief. She said
that she would write me back the next Tuesday after her boss got back.
I wrote back stating that I was not satisfied with the work
and I wanted to do something to get the problem corrected and that I would like
to have the name of the manufacturer.  I
stated that I would be writing a review on Angie?s List and Yelp and I would
prefer to use the manufacturer?s name and not theirs.
I was never contacted by them again.
