Chris G. met with my wife and I to discuss project and price. Chris was very professional and honest and showed us the different pavers we could use and designs and even brought paver samples so we could look at.
Hanover Appian 6x6 were used and a year after the installation, the patio is rock solid. I chose Tan Charcoal for the color but after a year the color has faded quite a bit, no big deal though.
I setup an install date which was pushed by JK General because of some "unforeseen delay"; I believe it was only a day delay but if you plan to take off from work to be at your house during the installation, make sure to let JK General that you want the installation on the schedule date.
The installation took about 2-3 days but I needed to call JK because there was a section of the patio where water accumulated when it rained, and this particular section was close to the house. I also expressed my concern to JK General that there was no grade slope on the patio (I believe 1/8 of an inch is recommended for every foot) and talked to Chris who assured there was a grade slope, even though I'd taken a level and the patio was pretty flat (JK General can come to the house and see themselves if they still disagree on this). My house has a walkout so I didn't place much concern on this but would have definitely made a big deal if I had an underground basement.
Another issue was that it took JK General two or three weeks to send someone to burry the downspout on the side of the house where the patio was. This was done but the job was done poorly as I could see the corrugated pipe sticking out the ground. I ended up excavating myself and bought additional material to hide the corrugated pipe.
When the job was completed, I paid the remaining balance by check. I received an email from Chris saying they had not received the remaining payment so I needed to call the bank and request a copy of the check. I went further to tell them which bank the check had been cashed/deposited in, and the JK General informed me that it had been their mistake.
Overall the experience was ok. Even though Chris was very nice and professional and made himself available most of the time, there were a couple of times that I could not get hold of him so I ended up calling the owner who was very polite and responsive w/ my concerns.
Will I use JK General again? Possibly, but I would make sure this time to be at the house while they do the work and inspect their work as they progress. I tend to leave the work to the professionals and let them be but most of the time I've found that contractors slack off and do not do the work properly unless someone is reminding them to do right.
As per the price, it was the best per-square-foot price I received from two other contractors, so if anyone is looking into building just a solid patio w/o bells and whistles I'd recommend JK General.
expense) but they seemed to lack the competence for a job of this complexity. I contacted Chris G. with my concerns and assurances were given that they would be addressed, and they were not. Not bad people or bad intentions, just a lack of competence, follow through and attention to detail.
"."
During the design and planning phase Chris came back for a second visit so that we could discuss more details, and we were in contact via phone and email exchanging ideas, picking the finishes for my new bathroom, and scheduling when the work would start. On the day the work began, Chris showed up with Juan and his crew and they got right to work. As with most projects, we ran into a few issues along the way, including a burst pipe on the first day. This was NOT caused by Juan and his crew which was confirmed by a 3rd party plumber. I wouldn't even mention it except to give credit to Juan's crew, and one member in particular who sat next to that pipe for 2 full hours catching the leaking water in a bucket until the plumber arrived to shut off the water to my condo. That problem, as well as all the others we ran into, were handled quickly after consulting with me to make sure I was OK with the solution.
The work was completed in the 1 week time frame that Chris had originally told me (8 calendar days, 7 work days). On 2 of those 7 work days, the work crew showed up very late. I found out later that one was due to their supplier not opening on time, and the other was due to car trouble. However, the communication was frustrating during that time. Nobody told me what was going on until I called and started asking questions. I would have appreciated a head's up so that I could plan my day, but in the end it did not affect the original work schedule much at all. During that week of work, the shower was unusable for only 3 days, and the toilet for only 1 night. This was very important to me due to this being my only bathroom, and they were very accommodating even though I'm sure it caused them some extra issues.
Overall, I am more than happy with the results. My new bathroom is a significant upgrade over the old. It is so much better that sometimes I take a little longer to do something so that I can admire the new fixtures and especially the travertine tile. The only complaints I have about their work are about some of the final touches. Some pencil marks were left on some of the tiles, there were a few spots where paint had dripped and wasn't cleaned up, and the shower faucet isn't aligned 100% straight (it is rotated clockwise by a few degrees). None of this makes me even slightly regret choosing JK General Contractor. I should also mention that I am slightly to blame for these things. I was not watching closely enough to catch these until after they were completely done and I had paid the final installment. Also, I believe that they would have come back to fix these things if I had asked them to, but I never bothered to ask.
