Commonwealth Painting was amazing. Joe Fox did an excellent job of managing the project and communicating with me throughout the process. The painters were thorough and efficient. They respected my property and cleaned up when they left. I will definitely use them again and will gladly recommend to anyone looking for quality painters.

Joe is really good at noticing details and being clear on what's needed. He's also great with scheduling - they start when they say they'll start and finish on time! A rarity!!!

Commonwealth Painters has painted for me several times both interior & exterior. They have done great every time. Communication was good and we are happy with all of their work. We will be calling them in the future.

Service and work was excellent. Included the need to build a new set of rails on top of our portico, which was done perfectly. Suggested using alternative materials for the portico rails to prevent inevitable wood rotting and replacement. Work was done in time and was reasonably priced.

It was a pleasure dealing with Joe Fox and Commonwealth Painters. We got 6 prices and CP was one of the lower estimates. In the beginning Joe made us comfortable that CP was a reputable and knowledgeable painting company and would be able to complete what they promised. We signed the contract and  work was actually done faster than we had anticipated. All the way through Joe responded promptly to all of our questions and returned soon after the project was complete to work on the punch list items. We would definitely use them again in the future and would recommend them to others,

Arrived on time. Lowest of three quotes. Responsive, Friendly.  Crew was neat and polite.  Did a good job.  When areas needed extra attention they were quick to address concerns.  Had to have 2 more things done once home was inspected.  Called them up and they came out within 3 days to take care of everything.

We hired Joe Fox and his crew two years in a row. We bought our home in 2012 - Commonwealth had just repainted the exterior for the previous owners and we liked the quality of work (but not the colors the owners chose). So in 2013 we hired them to remove wallpaper in our dining room and basement stairwell and paint both spaces including trim.
In 2014 we were ready to have some exterior painting done. We called around for multiple quotes just to do our due diligence and Commonwealth was the most competitively priced.   Joe was quick to send me a proposal and is very easy to communicate with - straight forward and no extra surprises. We hired them again and they painted our exterior wrap around front porch, a garage door, and two exterior doors.
The crew showed up a couple minutes early on each occasion and were very respectful. Joe checked in at the end of each day as well. The quality of both jobs is great and we plan to use them again in the future.

Commonwealth Painters (specifically Joe Fox) were extraordinarily accommodating.  I had to postpone painting three times because of slow progress in completing repairs on the house I was moving to, which was 200 miles away.  Then, after I finally got to move to my "new house" and Commonwealth was able to get in to paint the "old" house, I had to ask them to also paint the garage floor, as I had to move out quickly once the repairs to the other house were done. THEN, just as I got an offer on the house the "old" house, the HOA decided (after 8 years) that it was time to get tough about paint colors, so I had to call Commonwealth again to come back and paint the front door a different color and paint all the sparkling white trim so it was "antique white."  Each time I had to call to postpone or add a new task, they were very accommodating.  I would hope no one reading this would take this as a green light to postpone work without a darn good reason, but I was ever so grateful they were able to work with me on the dates, and then get all the work done in time for me to go to closing in a short timeframe.  Whew.
The only complaint I had was that they didn't get everything covered well enough so that paint didn't drift onto the floors and other things that weren't to be painted (because the house was practically empty when they went to paint, they sprayed instead of rolling/brushing).  So I had to scrape bits of paint off here and there.  And they missed a couple of things entirely, but that was maybe my fault for not making it clear what had to be done with some of the interior  trim. And they came back and made it right, so no problem there.  Also, Joe steered me away from making a big mistake with the garage floor "paint" - and oh, my, the floor came out so nice with the stain that he used.  None of the grease stains and other guck came through.  it looked practically new.  And overall, the house looked brand-new too - and sold within two weeks.  And the HOA was very  happy with the paint color on the exterior trim (but I don't really care what they think.  At least not any more.  ;-)

They were punctual and when my husband saw some mistakes or errors, they corrected them.  We even changed the colors in some of the rooms midway through the process and the crew was flexible and accommodated our new choices.  I recommended them to my neighbor across the street.  They were referred to us by our interior designer.

We originally contracted with this company last Summer (2013) for
significant amounts of exterior and interior work and it took until June
2014 to get it to where at least the results are somewhat presentable.
The original work was somewhat shoddy (didn't use primer so streaks
developed, drips everywhere, uneven paint marks, carpet stains);
consequently, the co-owner had to come back on several occasions to
re-address significant oversights. We are not particularly picky people,
but these were noteworthy problems that needed addressing. In spite of
repeated promises to come back to finish exterior issues, we regularly
dealt with "radio silence"-- our exterior still isn't painted uniformly
and our interior bathroom still has some streaks, although they did come
back to apply primer to most of the walls and repaint at their own
expense (of course!).

To this company's credit, the co-owner did come back several times to
work on both the interior and exterior. Their original team seemed to be
in a hurry to get onto the next job, so we found all sorts of problem
issues, some of which were never resolved. Frankly, we just want it over
with, which may be the strategy.

I would not recommend this company. They need remedial painting and
etiquette classes (the workmen were somewhat rude).
The company just responds whenever it feels like it and is horrible at
communication and keeping folks in the loop on what the plan is. I can't
tell you the number of communications tactics I implemented simply to
get a response from someone.

Recommend you steer clear.

Commonwealth Painters were courteous, prompt and professional from start to finish of the job! They started and completed job when they said they would. They thoroughly cleaned up afterward and did a walk- through with us once the job was completed, to discuss everything done. We were extremely pleased with the results and have recommended them to others. We will use them again!

Crew was in and out in one day.  Great finish. Ceilings, walls and
trim.  Courteous, professional, priced well and timely.  Just what I
needed.  I am also a realtor and refer them to my colleagues, clients
and friends.

Joe came over to my house to walk through the painting I wanted to do and followed up with a written estimate within the next 24 hours. We were able to schedule the work within the following two weeks. His crew showed up on time and worked through the day until the job was completed.  After the completed the second coat in one area, they asked me to take a look - we all agreed that it needed a third coat and the crew stayed a bit later than planned to ensure all the work could be completed prior to their departure. They covered all furniture and floors well and cleaned up after. Joe and his crew were fast and professiona; I love the work. Will absolutely contract with Commonwealth again.

Steve Fox and Commonwealth Painters were recommended to my husband and me by our [Angie's List] decorator.  All work is now completed, and we are very happy with the result.  I first met with Steve in late May [he arrived on time at the house as promised] to discuss what needed to be done, and he followed-up promptly thereafter to provide me with a detailed painting estimate.  Steve accommodated our request to begin work on Saturday, and he and his 4-man crew arrived early as planned to start work.  After giving instructions to the crew, Steve had to leave to get other jobs underway.  But that was not an issue at all, because the crew got right to work and, except for a brief stop for lunch, they worked for almost 10 hours straight to finish in one day.  We had been told the job might take two days, and we were pleasantly surprised that it was finished earlier.  Steve checked on his crew's progress throughout the day, stopping back once to check in person and calling periodically to ensure that we were satisfied with how things were going.  Steve's crew worked very hard and very efficiently; but that doesn't mean they sacrificed on quality to finish quickly.  They are clearly skilled professionals as the painting results are beautiful.  They also put everything back to rights before leaving, right down to rehanging drapes and reattaching plug receptacles, and removing all remanants of taping and debris.  Our experience with Commonwealth Painters was extremely positive, and we recommend them to other Angie's List members.   

We hired them to paint our son's bedroom and bath because they did such a good job on our MBR the first time. However, my wife found some minor errors in my son's room and asked them to fix them. Steve Fox, the owner, gave us the impression that he was going to fix them when all he did was look at them and then tell us he would send a crew over on a certain date. Well, that date came and went and they never showed. Nor did they return our phone calls requesting that they come back.. These guys do a good job and are attentive when they think more work is coming their way, but forget it if it is a one and done. I was going to have them repaint our basement after we have it renovated AND recommend them to my sister. Do not trouble yourselves with this company. There are plenty of other painting companies in NoVa who can do just as good or even better work.

They did a good job. Their work ethic was good.
